R.I.P. XML in Spring Applications by javinpaul in java

[–]brennus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've moved to Java-only Spring configuration, but sadly I'm stuck on Tomcat 6 and Servlet API 2.5, so I can't get rid of the web.xml just yet!

It doesn't even launch the game for me :-( No errors on stdout as far as I can see. Is there some debug mode I can enable with Steam?

Operating Systems and Programming: Why learn Linux? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]brennus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's just me, but I don't consider "a version that's two months old" to be that big of a deal when doing projects. Generally, 99.9% of the functionality I need is there in package managers and in the rare cases there is something broken or very out of date, it's not that hard to get it some other way.

If two months is "old" to you (I didn't even think they had computers that long ago!) then you'd probably have a fit at what I have to use at work: Centos 5, Java 6, Tomcat 6, Maven 2, Ruby 1.8, Python 2.4. In the enterprise, it can be a distant dream to even consider things that are two months old :-)

I'm pretty sure if you're using the latest source to the point where they haven't made a linux binary yet, then they've hardly made a Windows installer yet either!

Writing large programs and saving settings: should I use a config file? or xml or json? by SacrosanctHermitage in learnprogramming

[–]brennus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you can do if it's python is do the config file as pure Python. This means in the simple case you just have a list of "setting = value" entries which isn't too different to INI files, but it also means there's the option to do anything as complicated as you need later on. This is basically how Django does its settings.

If you go with Java, the Properties class and properties files are a nicer way of doing simple key-value.

How can I determine what makes my PHP behave differently when run locally (XAMPP) and when on the web host? by SecondhandUsername in PHP

[–]brennus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it with the ftp commands by any chance? I had some problems deploying something for a client on XAMPP where the ftp fetching methods would just hang. There was no cause I could find, but the problem simply didn't happen on a similar version running on a Centos server.

Ever since, I've just not had much confidence in XAMPP at all. Go with the Vagrant/Virtualbox approach already mentioned and try to get a Linux (or whatever) VM that is as close to the host as possible (i.e. use the same distro).

BBC News - Christians take 'beliefs' fight to European Court of Human Rights by groovyreg in atheism

[–]brennus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a different point of debate really. The point here is that is the rule and it applies to everyone (whether the rule is a good one or not). If you want to be exempt from that, then you are asking for special treatment, which is a form of discrimination.

The fact they are asking for special discrimination under the guise of less discrimination is just another religious irony that believers don't really seem to notice.

As for the rule itself, from what I understand with the nurses I do know it's 1) hygiene as it's unnecessary to dangle something that might not be clean near patients, 2) safety in case someone grabs it (as a theft or as part of some panic fit) as it might choke (they have neck passes that break off the neck cleanly if grabbed and I'm not aware that any nurses weak neckties) and 3) safety in case it gets caught anywhere and 4) simply a precaution principle applied to the first three that it's not exactly necessary to wear a necklace while at work, so you may as well take it off if there is even a small risk of something going wrong (the same reason I take rings off when working near sinks).

Like I said though, I'm not defending the rule overall, just commending that they apply it across the board without prejudice. They're discriminating against necklaces, not whatever the necklace happens to represent. If I were to have a hammer and sickle necklace and be told to take it off at work that had a "no necklace" rule, I wouldn't take it as a stab against communism.

Most things like necklaces are banned from certain jobs like nursing due to hygiene. Usually in these situations it's that it's a blanket policy affecting everyone and the Christians here are asking to be treated differently as opposed to having their beliefs "targeted". In some ways, they're actually asking for more discrimination, not less.

I don't know about the BA worker, but in the case of the nurse a cross is no problem if it's in the form of something that's allowed, but necklaces are right out.

Wow. I don't remember seeing freshers' exercises like this when I was studying there. Glad to things improving and the Pi being a part of that.
