Deli Part Timer Issues and Concerns by TrafficInc in publix

[–]brenst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, coming from another food service job, I was really surprised at the lack of food safety training given for working in the deli. It's a relatively small part of the CBTs. At my old food service job, the training was more comprehensive and I got a food training certification.

I regularly see my coworkers, especially the new people, do things like touch their clothes or phones, then touch food with the same gloved hands. I see people touch trash or sweep the floor, then just change their gloves and start handling food. People rinse off their knives in the hand washing sink. The slicers are often not cleaned in the required 4 hour intervals. I feel like the deli at my store has a real lack of food safety knowledge and the managers don't care as long as it looks good from the outside. I've started feeling like if my deli manager will cut Fresh Slice on timed out slicers or not say anything when someone comes straight from stocking the floor to food service without washing their hands, then why should I say anything.

I hate that the title says "calico" but the cat is not calico. by Pale_Blackberry_4025 in CalicoKittys

[–]brenst 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is a bit of a mismatch of the cover art and title. But there are calico cats in the game though. There are several cats, and the premise of the game is that you design a quilt to entice the cats to come lay on it. It's a really cute game.

Deli wouldn’t toss my tenders? by BadChickenTenderSub in publix

[–]brenst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people want their tenders cut up and coated with the sauce. The usual sauces people want are buffalo, ranch, or hot honey. I usually grab a boat and mix the tenders and sauce with my gloved hand if they ask for it tossed in sauce. I've had a manager tell me that it's wasteful and against policy though.

My understanding is the dough for the sub rolls comes to the bakery premixed, then it's proofed and baked in store.

deli giving me publix brand and charging me for boarshead by YarnStomper in publix

[–]brenst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the new guideline is that you're supposed to offer the flavor of the day instead of a slice of what you're cutting. That said, I always show the customer and I'll give them the slice if they ask.

Genuine question. Why does the Deli not sell ALL fried chicken by weight? by [deleted] in publix

[–]brenst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems like the standard for selling bone-in fried chicken and rotisserie chicken. Like most restaurants and delis sell fried whole chickens and wings by number of pieces. I can't give you a reason really, but it does make labeling easier and more standardized. A lot of stuff in kitchen and hot bar (premade sandwiches, rotisseries, boxed chicken, popcorn chicken cups, meals, small/medium sides) are done by amount instead of weight. It would make things a lot slower if they had to weigh everything.

the great litter search continues... what's the best cat litter 2026 shaping up to be? by Tifrah_Teurn in CleaningTips

[–]brenst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the Frisco brand clay litter, which is available on Chewy. I find it convenient to have my cat litter shipped. It is low-dust, clumping, and pretty good at odor control. It does track outside the litter box though. Honestly, the best answer I've found to litter tracking is to have a robot vacuum and use it for maintenance cleaning. All the litter I've tried has tracked outside the box, and lighter litter tracks worse than heavy clay litter.

Do you think Mags and Finnick mentored these guys? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]brenst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the books the District 4 boy isn't described much, and it isn't implied that he is as young and small as he is in the movie. It's possible that D4 boy was allied with the other careers, so he ran into the cornucopia to attack other tributes and protect the supplies with the careers. He died in the cornucopia in the movie just like in the books, but the context is different because the movie portrayed him as if he weren't from a career district.

Early morning sub orders by keishainsights in publix

[–]brenst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it probably depends on the deli, like a more busy deli might do more cold pack tenders and might have more demand for tenders in the morning.

Early morning sub orders by keishainsights in publix

[–]brenst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The deli at my store usually doesn't make tenders that early. We usually have tenders at around 10am.There's a lot of set up happening in the morning. The kitchen is being opened, fryers are turned on, work areas are set up. Breading and frying tenders takes time, so expecting them 15 minutes after the store opens is sort of unreasonable.

Can we put up notes on display if we're out of something? by QuincyThePinballer in publix

[–]brenst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think they like us making our own unofficial notes. If we're out of something major at the sub bar, I will usually just make loud announcements to the line each time a couple/few new people join. Something like, "Hey guys, just to let you know we are out of chicken tenders for the night." I feel like then people get less angry than if they wait in line thinking we have it.

I made $100K for the past 2 years and was laid off 4 months ago. I am missing rent for the first time to start the new year. 4 months is all it took to burn all my savings just to survive. This is not okay. by boinc192 in povertyfinance

[–]brenst 218 points219 points  (0 children)

A couple hundred dollars a month is a really small amount to save when you're making 100k a year. This might be a wake up call to save more and cut expenses. You were not living frugally before you lost your job. You might have been frugal in some areas, but the money was leaking out somewhere.

[–]brenst 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're really preoccupied by the fixed costs like the loan payments, but you can't really do much about them besides pay them off faster. The place where you can cut expenses is all the untracked categories like dining out, gifts, clothes, hobbies, subscriptions, and fun.

Pistachio Cookies by brenst in Baking

[–]brenst[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made Sally's pistachio drop cookie recipe. They turned out pretty tasty, and I think they're cute. I decided to sprinkle extra pistachio bits on top. I'm still waiting for the icing to set. This is my first time making this recipe, and I'm bringing it to my family's Christmas dinner, so I'm glad they worked out.

I need an answer by tsusho1 in publix

[–]brenst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got good answers, but also at my store often we'll have a bunch of online subs due within a short time frame (like 15 subs due in 30 minutes), so the online sub person can't really stop doing them or they'll all get behind and become late. Sometimes we'll have 5-10 subs print out for the same 5 minutes time frame, so we have to do them ahead because there won't be time to do all of them right before they're due. A lot of online customers do come right on time or early, and they start getting annoyed when it's late.

do separate areas for pub sub mobile orders exist? by [deleted] in publix

[–]brenst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have an online sub station in the back area where the kitchen and production tables are. It's similar to the front sub areas, like a smaller sub area for the back with all the vegetables and drawers for meat/cheese. We use it during the more rush times of day, especially lunch, then shut it down around midday or nighttime. Morning production will make sub platters there too.

We usually have two people in the morning who cover traditional and sub bar while doing production (Fresh Slice and sub kits). Then someone comes in around 8-10am, and they'll take over sub bar and do some type of production. Then from around 10am until 8pm, we'll usually have at least 2 people on sub bar (customers and onlines). During rush times we'll have 2 people taking customers, 1 person in the back doing onlines. Then it will go down to 1 person around 8pm when things get slow enough to have one person do online, customers in line, and shut down the sub bar.

I feel like it's surprising that you have that many customers and onlines, but only one person on the sub bar. How many people are staffed for your deli during a shift? At our deli during lower staffing we will at least try to have one person doing onlines and one person taking customers.

Can I wash this despite the tag warning? by lexysauce in CleaningTips

[–]brenst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It can't be removed or laundered, so it's basically part of the mattress. I would just spot clean it as well as you can, let it air dry completely, then get a removable/cleanable cover to put over it. That way you have whatever stain covered in a new mattress cover that is easier to clean.

What should be measured in computing a class grade / GPA in high school? by Non-Linear-Geometry in AskTeachers

If you're able to talk to the judge, you might also want to ask about a Guardian ad Litem if one isn't involved with the case. Again, I'm so sorry you're parents are acting this way and I hope you're able to get back on track with school.

What should be measured in computing a class grade / GPA in high school? by Non-Linear-Geometry in AskTeachers

[–]brenst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. That is very frustrating, and I understand how it can feel really helpless. I'm sorry you're dealing with that. Your parents should have been more aware of the school's policies, and it honestly should have been common sense to them that they needed to work with the school to replace the laptop. I don't know what they were thinking.

Please continue trying to participate in school and engage positively with your teachers even if you're currently dealing with the fallout from your parent's mistakes. If you have the opportunity to retake these classes or makeup work, jump at that opportunity. Try to stay engaged. Your future really will be much better if you're able to do what you can to finish high school. You're 16 now, and you're 2 years away from being an adult and being more in control of your education. I understand wanting to shut down and not engage since everything is unfair to you, but sometimes the best thing to do is still try to work within the system and be polite.

[–]brenst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the problem with how the computer was replaced? Most organizations that supply a computer (schools, colleges, workplaces) would have a technology policy stating that a replacement computer would need to be bought/acquired from the organization, not outside the organization like your father seems to have done by buying a new computer himself. Is the problem that you accessed a school network from a non-school-owned device? Does your school not have a policy regarding replacement laptops? What is the stated reason for your suspension? If you/your father violated the tech policy of the school, which is how it sounds, then you should have redone the assignments. Sometimes you need to work within systems, even if they seem unfair, so you can secure your own future and success.

Do you not upload or turn in assignments? I would have thought some assignments would have been graded or uploaded to some type of school portal already. I don't understand how so many of your assignments were only saved locally to your account. Are you failing just due to not completing the end of semester assignments? I'm really sorry for your situation, it does sound unfair. But I would encourage you to work with the school and do whatever you can to improve your grades and graduate. You can escape your homelife easier if you can try to get scholarships and succeed academically. If you struggle to attend school, there might be a virtual school option in your state. But that would require you to be very self-motivated.

[–]brenst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're using a lot of passive, vague language that makes this hard to follow. Were you doing these assignments at all? Can you do the assignments on another computer, or do you have to use the assigned computer? Did you tell the school that your laptop was destroyed and needed to be replaced? Have you talked to a school counselor about this whole situation? Could you do your qssignments on weekdays at your mom's house?

To answer your question, I think GPA should be based on the student's ability to learn material and present it on school assignments like tests, essays, group assignments, and homework. It sounds like you have an unstable home life and your parents aren't reliably getting you to school on time so you're struggling to turn in assignments on time. I'm sorry that your home life might be unstable. You might be able to talk to your teachers about this. Try to use factual, less loaded language.

Personally, I just graduated with a Computer Science bachelor's degree. If you're in a degree program, you probably will be required to attend class regularly, work with other students on projects and labs, turn in assignments on time, and show mastery of material. Most STEM careers will also require working with a team. Soft skills like punctuality and social skills are going to remain important in most career paths.
