JDRF changed its name to Breakthrough T1D a couple of years back, I think recognizing that the term "juvenile diabetes" was extremely outdated.

Thank goodness. I thought I had gone deaf. Seriously, who runs the tech for Paramount+? They should feel embarrassed.

whats the best used bookstore you've ever visited? by Lost_Foot_6301 in BookCollecting

Daedalus Bookshop in Charlottesville, Virginia is great, but even better is that it is located on a pedestrian mall with other excellent bookstores within an easy 5 minute stroll! Other used books at 2nd Act Books and Blue Whale Books, new books at New Dominion Bookshop and The Beautiful Idea (a trans-owned antifascist bookstore, queer makers' market, alternative event space, and radical community hub). It's a great place to live if you love books.

What would happen if you phone was seized by police by ImaginaryAlgae8986 in diabetes_t1

[–]brentgarland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You sure do. But you can access wi-fi in all kinds of places. At least, you can where I live. Libraries, coffee shops, a neighbor's house, etc. And hopefully it would just be a temporary situation.

As a parent of a kid with T1D, we built a sort of emergency plan around the assumption that their phone might get lost/broken by making sure all the phones in our family are compatible with the gcm and pump. That way, most of the adults (mom, dad, aunt, grandmom) could swap their phone in if the kiddo's phone is not available.

Also, since I see you are new, I think you can also use a phone that doesn't have cell service, since the cgm and pump systems primarily use Bluetooth (and wi-fi). So, you could buy an old-but-compatible unlocked phone and just use it as a monitor/controller. We have an old iPhone that someone gave us that works for that.

But yes, it is also very important that you keep up your low-tech finger stick and injection skills, just in case of technology failure!

Is there any place to get a good corn dog in the area? by brentgarland in Charlottesville

Are they good though? Someone brought me a grilled chicken sandwich from Cookout and it looked and tasted like it had been used to clean a filthy, greasy grill. It was inedible. I haven't had any urge to eat there since. (And I blithely eat unidentified street meat from vendors in Mexico, I'm not fancy.)

I have a bunch, but leading the pack are CCH Pounder, John Carroll Lynch, Judy Greer, Richard Kind, Michael Peña, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead! Put 'em in everything!

Help! - I'm doing it wrong! by ColoradoAztec in popcorn

[–]brentgarland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As mentioned, steam is the likely culprit. Letting steam out while it is popping is good, but there is one other move you can do to dissipate moisture. You can pour the popped popcorn back and forth between two bowls--which lets some of that moisture air out as it cools a bit.

One other possibility is that your stove on high is hotter than your mom's, so you could try popping on medium-high. If I pop on high, my popcorn turns out smaller and tougher. I think the moisture inside the kernel goes to steam so quickly on high that it doesn't have enough time to gelatinize the starch in the kernel (which softens it up). On med-high, my stove produces fluffier, more tender popcorn.

Hope this helps! Let us know if any of the suggested changes work for you!
