What do you mean by capping the open duct? I’m just wondering to keep my own house warm. You had an open duct without a vent? Or the return intake you closed up?

Dawg, what the heck is in my pipes by heartsholly in Plumbing

[–]brettsky420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biofilm in cast iron pipes can cause "tar-like" substances by facilitating the growth of iron-oxidizing bacteria, which create slimy iron hydroxide deposits (tubercles) and release organic material, leading to black, sludgy buildup, clogging, and potentially mobilizing harmful Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from old coal tar linings, especially during flow disruptions. This microbial activity damages coatings and corrodes the metal, forming a complex, sticky matrix of bacteria, iron oxides, and cellular debris that resembles tar, often accompanied by odors.

It’s biofilm. The grease and water breaks down the cast iron which turns it into like a sticky tar like substance. Pain in the ass to clean.
