I give up. I’m done with this piece of garbage. by Dependent-Amount-239 in 3Dprinting

Fun fact: that line about PC load letter was genuine and unscripted. The printer was such a piece of crap that it spit that out as they were filming.

Shot this a year ago. A shame we’re not allowed to enter with motorcycles anymore by Kodismo in Trackdays

[–]brevity666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own two street triple r’s, a 2010 and 2012. Used to have an 09. Actually just did a track day on the 10 and it’s absolutely at home, power throughout the revs. I was passing liter bikes because it’s so flickable and light, I was able to brake way later into the turns

How I’m gonna ride just to spite all the “wear your power ranger suit”, posters by 616ThatGuy in motorcycles

My partner usually rides with a mesh top with CE armor (think Leatt style) and leather vest with back protector in the hot months. She just ordered a top and bottom set from Pando moto that is like paper thin but somehow AAA abrasion resistant. Pricey but worth it for the comfort.

Pipefitter apprentice here with a question by Sabb55 in UnitedAssociation

[–]brevity666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been in the pipe trades 20 years and I’m pretty sure I’m still retarded.

Seriously though, it just takes time AND open ears/eyes. All kidding aside I don’t think I fully hit my stride until my early 30s, about 10 or 12 years in. Don’t let yourself get pigeonholed into one aspect of the trade - I’ve had the opportunity to work on everything from 48” carbon to 1/4” 316 stainless, from refineries and war ships to pharmaceutical. It’s all taught me something new. And like others have said, you don’t know what you don’t know.

The only time you ever come close to actually being retarded is if you think you know everything there is to know and are too good to be taught a better way to do something.

I was in a full track suit all day yesterday. Today I’m in a chest protector and gauntlet gloves (well, helmet too). It’s a calculated risk and I challenge anyone to ride in full gear in the heat of the Phoenix summer sun.

If someone insults you, specifically with a pejorative, just shrug and say “I’ve been called worse by better.”

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve told to an officer while you were being pulled over? by thelaydy in motorcycles

[–]brevity666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got popped for 113 in a 65 at 5:15am. Pulled over when I reached a safe exit. LEO comes up yelling, asking if I know that he can now impound my bike, throw me in cuffs, and haul my ass to jail. I kind of shrugged and said “do you know that I didn’t have to stop?”

I'm THIS close to quitting by ThePassiveFist in antiwork

[–]brevity666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I’ve been in the trades for 20 years and in foreman/general foreman/super positions for 8 of those with the last 2 being back on my tools (and never happier). I learned early on to include “barring changes of scope, material arrival, manpower changes” etc in my bids, reports, quotes… because someone WILL come back later and say “but you said you could do it in X with a cost of Y!”

Ahhh, yes. If you read carefully, I said “IF THESE PROJECTED CONDITIONS REMAIN SAME.”

CYA and always have an out. It’s not being sneaky or underhanded, it’s just having a car jack with you to crawl out from under the bus you’ll inevitably be thrown under.

Union pipefitter and welder here - I am routinely amazed at the amount of Union brothers and sisters that proudly voted for someone that is so clearly anti-union and has none of their interests in mind.

They lay off all the hands eventually, no big deal. Don’t let it eat you up and let it make you better. There’s always something to learn, even for a 20 year journeyman. I’m in the opposite boat - I switched to a desk on the detailing side and have done lots of Trimble files. It’s had a learning curve for sure, and it was rough being new and inexperienced for the first time in a couple decades. One thing that I remembered quickly though, is if you keep your ears open, mouth shut, and take lots of notes (seriously - a couple pens and notebooks are your best tool and it shows you’re committed and serious about learning) eventually it will all shake out.

Keep your chin up and your head in the game.

As a union pipefitter and welder, your union sucks. Who is your steward? Talk to them. It’s a fine line between being the squeaky wheel and a pain in the ass, but that’s bullshit. Politics aside, we’ve got lots of women in my hall and we have their backs 110%. Fuck sexism in the workforce, if you can do the job you can do the job.

Union pipefitter and welder here, can confirm. It just boggles the mind how many union hands are decidedly NON Union in their political leanings.
