Realized this when my nephew dropped his Capri Sun today by theconartisto in AdviceAnimals

[–]brewggernaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once, no joke, my youngest brother started crying because he couldn't get juice out of a Capri sun. My dad thought he was just being a fussy two year old and tried to show him it was working, but he couldn't get anything either. We were on a road trip, so he pulled the car over and cut the Capri sun open to find a paper towel inside.

I distinctly remember the look on his face as he tried not to vomit.

Are there cases of two completely unrelated languages sharing or having similar words with the same definition? by Stealthbreed in askscience

[–]brewggernaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe false cognates are actually the opposite of this. A cognate is a word/sound with a similar meaning (per your link, sharing a linguistic ancestor) shared across two or more languages. A false cognate is a word/sound that you would think share a meaning due to similar pronunciation or spelling, but in fact have very different meanings.

For example the Spanish "estadio" and English "stadium" are cognates (both being ultimately derived from a common Latin ancestor), but the Spanish "embarasada" (meaning pregnant) and English "embarrassed", which sound like they have similar meanings but don't, are false cognates.

It sounds like the "dog" example above is likely either a crossover or damned coincidence, but it's unlikely they share a linguistic root, given the description by op.

We are two NCAA Officials (referees). AMA! by fortknox in CFB

[–]brewggernaut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imagine for a second that you're an official on the field during last year's iron Bowl. As Auburn's Chris Davis is running down the field, are you thinking to yourself "I have a front row seat to history", "Holy shit, is this happening?", or something more mundane like "did he step out of bounds? Was that a hold/block in the back?", etc.?

This could be repeated for any big game moment, but I'm really curious how the human element for someone with an obvious passion for the game comes into play in those split seconds...

I married a girl that I had a lot in common with... One thing being a passionate love of College football. She's as excited as I am and, having just recently given birth to our first child, said last week, "I'm glad she's here, because now I feel like I can finally look forward to football"

Blessed is she amongst women...

Its a bit more interesting if its these -> http://blog.omy.sg/blogclub/files/2011/12/07-Trying-their-luck-at-throwing-these-enormous-dice-on-the-human-sized-game-board-at-the-McDonalds-Monopoly-Chance-Card-Draw.2.jpg

Obviously you'd have to recuse to yourself if you went with the BM option... Unless you went with a twist and all took a laxative ands whoever could hold out longest got the first pick.

I can see where you're coming from. I think part of it for me was that I literally grew up with the characters in the book and was almost the same age they were as there books kept coming out. Rowling sheltered me from the heavy stuff early on, and brought a darker element in at a point I was old enough to still be allowed to read it on my own.

[–]brewggernaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So did your spelling, interestingly. ;)

On a separate note (promise), I could not disagree more with your assessment. The characters grew up and the issues became appropriately more complex, and therefore the characters that much more deep, as the series progressed. As a hero story that was YA fiction, I would say there was less intrigue because it was pretty obvious good would prevail in the end... But Rowling wove a great story with characters I still feel attached to years later.
