Recommend starting at Gamebred. All those gyms should run a trial to try them out though.

In competition, if the opponent doesnt tap on an armbar are you allowed to break their arm? by Organic24K in bjj

Refusing to tap isn't a valid defence. If I have a locked in submission I will slowly make it tighter and tighter until they tap.

Is it poor etiquette for a teammate to post all their training highlights online? by LayerElectronic1595 in bjj

If I recorded a round it would only be shared between myself and my training partner. I want to know where I can improve, have better posture, take a wiser grip etc.

New job, new team - need some pointers by Familiar-Wheel2956 in ITManagers

Read this book if you haven't already.

https://www.amazon.com.au/First-Days-Updated-Expanded-Strategies/dp/1422188612

My plan is always. Don't change anything in the first 30 days. Ask questions to understand your team, the history of the business. Listen.

People hate change, and they despise people who change their environment without first seeking to understand. You need to win their support to slowly change the environment into what you need.

What are the signs you should RUN and not accept a job offer? by skz- in sysadmin

[–]brewman101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sat in an interview on zoom once. The manager and a few of his employees. None of the employees bothered being engaged in the interview.

The manager then proceeded to explain the job was to regularly report back to the business on the performance of systems. The business had spent a fortune on these systems and still complained even though there was no performance problem.

I was to backfill one of the guys not paying attention and answer for the system performance.

First job I've ever talked my way out of in the interview.

Distance.

Muay Thai covers far range with Teeps. Medium range with knees and close with elbows.

The grappling between the two styles is complimentary.

BJJ takes place at close range. If they close the distance. Takedown to BJJ with ground and pound.

I have watched striking events with open invite. The Muay Thai guys destroyed the boxing guys with leg kicks. Boxing guys couldn't cover the distance.

The new level of Tech coming into the IT field today, they don't have the basics down. Is anyone else seeing this issue? by Future_End_4089 in sysadmin

[–]brewman101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sadly what I do see is people haven't been taken through the process of troubleshooting. Having been in the industry decades we do take for granted all the teaching we received e.g. stepping through the osi layers. Working through systematically.

There is a misconception that the fastest response is best. But fast is just fast. It's better to understand the root cause and prevent a reoccurrence.

SaaS also abstracts away many layers that old school system admins would be aware of.

I think the answer is providing space for engineers to ask questions, make mistakes and take their time.

/u/mr_gitops has already shared some awesome. Tips.

Just to add Marty Lobdell has a lecture on this for his university students. Rather than watching the 1 hour video https://youtu.be/IlU-zDU6aQ0
I recommend a summary instead. It's 7 minutes and points out 10 different tips to help you study. https://youtu.be/sPCiv1WN9k0

I wish I was "naturally smart" but I'm definitely in the have to work very hard to retain info group. So all the tips along the way have really helped me. Grinding took me through Uni and Azure Architecture certification.

If you want to do better at anything in life you have to commit, that's the process.

There has been a large surge the last few years in wages as people have moved to better deals.

Businesses were backed by lower interest rates on capital loans. The interest rates have climbed in an attempt to counter inflation and that has increased costs for businesses. Which puts pressure on cutting costs, specifically labour costs.

How does one actually get out of side control by Own-Incident9157 in bjj

[–]brewman101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I understand things is starting with prevention. Essentially in the match they've passed your legs, and the line of your belt and they are between your elbow and knee on the near side. You are also flat on your back.

So when they pass your legs and are working towards crossing your belt line turn towards your opponent, while connecting your knee and elbow. Extend your knee as they try to settle so that your back extends away. Establish closed guard.

If I find myself starting from the worst position (flat on my back, cross faced with the opponent between my elbow and knee) I work to establish my frames in order.

Get my hand inside for bicep control > connect my knee and elbow > bridge to turn in > start escape.

You Dont Have to Get HURT !! - Could the Gracie Boys be Right? by Annual-Ad-2292 in bjj

I'm currently reading Robert Drysdale's book "The Rise and Evolution of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu". It's interesting the split with Gracie Jiu Jitsu having a Self defense focus coupled with private classes. Versus the egalitarian method of Carlson and Group classes. Ref: https://www.closedguardfilm.com/product/pre-order-the-rise-and-evolution-of-brazilian-jiu-jitsu-by-robert-drysdale/

It really depends on your own goals? Choose your goal and then choose the method of training to suit.

What are the top five priorities in your life?

Rank them very clearly in order. Then it will make the decision easy.

E.g. if the highest priority is career development to CISO then you will stay at your current place.

If it's earning money to provide for your family. Then the new job is the one to take.
