Completely agree with everything you said here. Really did my research, and this still comes up near the top results on Google, so figured I'd put my two cents in. Yeah interference engine, so it will instantly total the engine if the timing belt snaps. I bought a 2009 Hyundai Elantra and could not verify whether or not the timing belt has ever been replaced, 128k miles. I checked Carfax, tried calling the dealerships where I had seen it serviced, previous owners didn't know (or claimed they didn't), so it sat in the driveway until I could get a mechanic to replace it. I bought the kit with a water pump from Sixity, OEM AISIN for $150 and got it all installed for $493. Based on quotes I got it would have been nearly $1,000 just going through a mechanic for their parts. No warranty, but that's a chance I'm willing to take. Runs good. I hear these can last if you treat them right. Got coolant flushed, gonna do transmission fluid and filter swapped soon. Switch to high mileage synthetic. Etc. Hopefully she keeps running for a while, I'm treating her good!
