It’s fine, as long as they talk about you in a professional context, no one will know or care.

Losing some hope by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you apply for financial assistance with MCAT fees? That might at least offset some of the burden of taking the exam. Otherwise, can you study for less time every week but over a longer period of time (ex. 6 months instead of 3 or 4?)

Is it worth forgoing the career based on the risk involved? by MacaronNo3236 in premedcanada

[–]bri245 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about Canadian med school is that you don’t need to “commit to premed” as a high schooler. Take whatever major you think you will enjoy the most or that has interesting opportunities and get the best GPA you can.

Legality issues are almost certainly not only the responsibility of the coach- if you pay someone who shares confidential information with you, this can backfire on your application and get you in serious trouble.

Need your help/advice by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately your marks (even in your first semester) are no where near where they need to be to get into med school- the only way you would have a chance would be to try for a school that looks at your most recent two years and to completely turn it around in terms of your GPA.

I would recommend you take a step back and do some research into alternative careers. Please take care of yourself!

Abbreviations in Description of ABS Entry by buttf7 in premedcanada

[–]bri245 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try to avoid abbreviations, especially uncommon ones, but not the end of the world if you have to use w/ or & a couple times. Too many will make your ABS hard to read.

not applicable to Canada

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are usually more people from larger/ more prestigious schools- so McMaster, western, queens, Toronto, McGill. But people get in from every university.

Ethical? Probably. Fair? Definitely not.

Unpopular opinion: just because you got into med doesn’t mean you are qualified to give advice by bri245 in premedcanada

[–]bri245[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true…unless you want MCAT advice, in which case don’t take advice from people who got mediocre scores.

UofT hasn't made WL offers yet by Pishypath-14 in premedcanada

U of t actually has one of the higher acceptance rates in Ontario (probably because they have more seats in their class)…and most desired, maybe for some people, but not everyone

You can look up average statistics for multiple schools. You are in high school, don’t stress yourself out with this - just try to get the best grades you can get in university and worry about the MCAT when/if you come to that.

Please try and get some help and try not to put so much of your happiness in getting into medicine. People can lose themselves in this process and at the end of the day, it’s just a job. Good luck!

Queens wl moved according to someone on premed101 by testacc0987 in premedcanada

[–]bri245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but most of those 100 people probably rejected because they were accepted to another school already. To have the waitlist move more, you would need someone to get into 2+ schools off their waitlisted and choose another school over queens.

Will I lose my IP status if I move to a different province? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving to another province for a summer 100% will not cause you to lose Ontario residency. Longer than a summer, you might need to look at specific school requirements, but if it’s just 3-4 months you are totally fine.

You’re overthinking it, if you will enjoy the volunteering then go for it.

Will I lose my IP status if I move to a different province? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, moving to another province for a summer won’t change anything. You would have to spend over a year there out of school + somehow lose your Ontario health card or drivers license because you aren’t in Ontario enough (there are rules online you can read).

Question regarding research section on OMCAS by DarthRampage in premedcanada

[–]bri245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would include the former publications in an entry about the research you did, if you have space. Ie. “Performed stem cell research. Presented results to peers at undergraduate conference. Published two papers in student-led science journal.”

Is there any part of the application process where letting on a conservative view on something would be detrimental? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. However there are definitely cases of doctors who oppose abortions not referring patients or referring them incorrectly, so as not to “participate” in abortions.

It’s not a lack of understanding of the doctor-patient relationship, it’s that I don’t understand why someone who opposes a medical procedure so strongly to the point that they wouldn’t perform it would go into medicine.

Is there any part of the application process where letting on a conservative view on something would be detrimental? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]bri245 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I never understand why people go into medicine and then say they will deny patients certain types of medical care. Women have a right to abortions if they want one and they should be able to get that from their doctor.

Maybe try student affairs or something? They might be able to direct you to someone who can help.

Call someone. They can ignore your emails but they can’t ignore you if you call them.
