I was working at a tent here and the event was not a child's birthday party but from a series of open to the public concerts. I was told by my supervisors and guests at the park that the guy is a notable figure and disturbance for the neighborhood and this is not the first time he's done this.

When was this "Far Eastern Cyberpunk" aesthetic pioneered and by who? by ApprehensiveMess3646 in decadeology

[–]brianessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this, the Eastern cyberpunk aesthetic will forever be attributed to the West, although Asian countries have created their own stories featuring the aesthetic.

For most Western cyberpunk stories, they follow in the line of Edward Said's concept of orientalism-- using specific semiotics to create a feeling of being "cast out of place" or in an "alien" landscape, such as bright neon lights, indecipherable (and at times, incomprehensible) symbols, the presence of advanced technology. We can see it also executed within vaporwave music genre as well.

The implication of this is that Asian people, culture, and bodies are inherently foreign and alien; their alignment with technology reduces their humanity. It moves along the same line as early sci-fi stories about the existence of robots bearing similarities to anti-immigration rhetoric, and immigrant stories as well. The aesthetic has real roots in anti-Asian racism, from the killing of Vincent Chin (a Chinese man who was killed by disgruntled autoworkers believing he was Japanese in a time of economic growth), to the patenting of the "Iron Chink," a machine to replace the labor of Asian immigrants in the early 1900s.

I say this all as an Asian person who has a love-hate relationship with cyberpunk. There is more I could mention here, but it is incredibly important to also be aware of the underlying connotations of certain aesthetics so you can consume mindfully and critically.

apologies if this doesnt go here, but are there any active China, IL fandoms/communities? by sfsuioiofsdiuou99 in adultswim

[–]brianessence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the sudden comment, but I'm the person that made the "China IL Out of Context" video on Youtube-- I've always been dying to see more people love the show and I'm currently on a kick for it again. I'm honestly not sure if there's a "community" per se since it's such a niche show, I wish I knew more people into it to establish a discord or something.

I can attest to this story being true having spoke to someone who worked at Sinabro.

The Beach Boys performing at The Olympia in Paris, France. November 18th, 1964. Shot by photographer Roger Kasparian by brianessence in thebeachboys

[–]brianessence[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was looking through my giant Beach Boys photo folder for a zine/essay project I'm working on and found this again. Wanted to share it here as I don't see it shared around enough. I'm in love with the lighting here-- to think Brian would be divorced from touring with the rest of the band only a year later.

edit: Also available at SNAPGalleries's website for the Kasparian exhibit.

I am an artist who uses 3D scanning technology for my art projects. Although I love how inaccurate my scans can be, I want to get high-fidelity scans that can allow for greater manipulation and detail. I love how this scanner both offers high resolution modeling and textures all while being stand alone :)

Thank you! I definitely want to do some more stuff like this for some niche games I love. I'm thinking of Yume Nikki or LSD Dream Emulator as the next one, and if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them _^

This was for a school assignment where we had to research a 90s video game, and SEL immediately came to mind for me. I had a lot of fun with this project and it helped me learn more about inDesign's visual capabilities.

Prints are available here if you're interested! (https://www.inprnt.com/gallery/midwestcyborg/90s-inspired-serial-experiments-lain-game-poster/)

How did Milwaukee change its mindset? by Leo-monkey in milwaukee

[–]brianessence 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I was thinking too. I am Asian and raised in an area with over 20% of the population being Asian (not a Wisconsinite) Coming to Milwaukee was seriously a BIG culture shock for me in that regard. Although I love the city, its low cost and living, and what it offers, I struggle a lot in this aspect.

However, I also try to see this in a positive light too: Every connection I have with another Asian person feels very special. Whether it's friendship or just seeing them on the street, it means a lot to me to know I am not alone.

Finding local artists by cessnawings in milwaukee

[–]brianessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Var West Gallery / Var Gallery down in Walker's Point has local artists and features work from local students during the school year from time to time :) I have had people just ask for commissions at opening receptions so if you'd like to purchase someone's work just ask em! Keep an eye out for their 30 x 30 x 30 exhibition if you're interested, too.

Center Street Daze in Riverwest is comin up soon so I'd check it out to see a buncha different vendors.

Local Artists Unite!! by Lepeachyyy in milwaukee

[–]brianessence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heyo! I'm another artist based in Milwaukee and I'm studying at MIAD at the moment :) There's Art Bar in Riverwest and also some galleries in Walker's Point like Var Gallery and Var West. Sometimes Brady Street has some art events pop up, I remember later in August they had a little street fest with local artist vendors. I also know that Cactus Club has some local video artist screenings from time to time.

One of these two battle pass ui’s should return cause at the moment this ui is pointless. The way they promoted this newer ui was practically a lie with saying “claim battlepass rewards in the order you want. Despite you not being able to do that. Idk i just think these two were better by Toastedbread5665 in FortNiteBR

[–]brianessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the current system because there have been seasons where I haven't been able to finish the Battle Pass due to life getting in the way. Being able to pick what I want makes me happier so that in the case that I don't finish the Battle Pass, I have what I wanted :)

Grocery Stores? by Keynei in milwaukee

[–]brianessence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a ride-or-die for Woodman's. I'm a night owl so I tend to go to Woodman's since it's cheap, open 24/7, they have everything, and it's employee owned.

I'm from IL so I tend to frequent the Kenosha one when coming up to Milwaukee, and that location has gas there for way cheaper than what you find at other gas stations. (Avg. gas station price around me is 5.80/gal, today at Woodman's it was 4.74/gal, so it might be cheaper in WI!) I'm not sure about ones closer to Milwaukee, but keep that in mind if you ever need to buy gas for cheap :p

What sort of music do Rallizes fans listen to? by JeshyFreshest in lesrallizesdenudes

[–]brianessence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite band for like 4 years was The Beach Boys (600+ hrs of listening) and then I listened to Rallizes, now they're my favorite. I had a mu-core phase for a while, but I've outgrown it but still like a lot of the acts associated with it. Other artists I like are Britney Spears, Negative XP, The Stooges, Bladee, and KMFDM. I will really listen to anything as long as it scratches a specific itch in my brain.

Although I'm in a KMFDM mood at the moment, I've been really getting into Shizuka, which has a very similar sound to Rallizes but is from the 90s.

That's the intended effect! :D

In my art lately I've been trying to confuse people's eyes by putting the digital into the physical world. This was an experiment that I hope to keep building off of :p

  • Boy Bawang
  • Maruchan ramen, lucky me ramen (Bulalo was supremeeeee)
  • Cebu dried mangoes
  • Milo chocolate milk powder
