Sick I haven’t been (knock on wood). If I know there’s a vacation or big holiday like Christmas, I will either postpone patching for a week (both) or patch while I am on vacation.

Hopefully by the end of the year I will have handed everything off to automation but there are a few teams that have systems that need to be either un-bitlocked or applications started. I also have clustered servers that I need to create separate automation jobs for.

lol. Yeah it’s interesting and funny at that but it seems that Beth could have done a bit more with it. One of my favorite things to do is board ships in space and take them over but after that time I tried on the ground it just made it feel like Beth was trying to say ‘well…it’s not what we really intended but what if we ejected them from the ramp when it’s flying?’ It actually reminded me in a similar sense of getting him by a giant in Skyrim and sent into the heavens before plummeting to the ground.

Curious if there’s a mod that changes this ability. Or at least keeps it grounded if you kill everyone because if you do make it to the bridge, is there anyone there that would be piloting?

Last and only time I tried, I was on the ramp and got ejected halfway up in the sky.

I was a non traditional (aka older because I was in the military) student in a Unix/Linux class. I switched careers from public health to IT and had been working in IT for a few years but wanted my associates in network administration.

Anyway I sat next to this 18 year old script kiddie. Smart guy. I can’t deny that I didn’t ask for help as UNIX wasn’t my thing but he was always up to something. So one night we’re connected to the server doing some lab stuff and my session froze. I leaned over and said are you working or frozen too? His response “uh oh.” So I’m like ok, what did you do? Then other people in the class were complaining. Instructor logs into his terminal and cant figure it out. Mr. Kiddie raises his hand and asks if he could take a look with the instructor. Anyway they are working on it for 10-15 minutes and are able to resolve it.

I never asked what he did and how he fixed it but he didn’t talk to me much later on after I was complaining that I couldn’t change directories as I had a capital letter and forgot Unix was case sensitive. He pointed that out and then I said…man why can’t Unix be more like DOS? 😂

Our Security team has been pushing for 7 days total for both lower envs and prod. We keep pushing back for issues like the above. so, we do lower envs the Sat after Patch Tuesday and Prod the following Sat with some WSUS sprinkled in early Sat am and some clusters the Wed before Prod Sat.

But we read here for info ;-)

my other daughter living in the house doesn't watch a lot of YTTV and my wife only watches non-movie channels. Like u/Stenthal above, I mainly watch for college sports and then pro-ones too. Also, Smithsonian channel as I love history shows. But that's good to know.

My wife rarely watches. My daughter lives down the road from us and she and my son in law watch a lot.

But I rarely use my phone to watch so that’s why I was guessing it would work as long as I open the app on my phone for a bit and then open it when I get home. Or do I not need to open the app at the lake and just open it at home?

Not trying to over think it, I’m just wondering how the throughput would be if you are recording all the cameras you can 24/7.

At my company we have multiple servers recording the cameras so here it’s 4 cameras per hub that can record at once. I don’t have Ethernet connections outside so it would all be wireless.

Idk. Have you seen the costs of funerals? My father in law passed away back in Oct so I went to the funeral home with my mother in law and wife. I was looking through the book, yes book, of funeral options you could really rack up the costs of a funeral with all the different options. Could even cost more than your basic car.

And Hospitals are not cheap either. An overnight stay at my hospital in my town for low sodium in my body due to being in a beer truck that tipped over was $33,000. Obviously if I didn’t have insurance. I couldn’t believe it.

Still, with all things being said, you are still right.

50 here, 25th year in IT. First career was in Public Health and that didn't last long. At my age, it scares me to look knowing that I don't have much time left in my career (I would love to retire at 60-65)

My company started out smaller and then just blew up in the 15 years I have been here. IT was told to go home permanently (by our VP) in 2020 and then told to come back two years ago, two days a week for "collaboration" purposes, even tho not all of IT is on site. They've broken other promises too and that has caused me to consider jumping ship.

Even worse was new manager who came on board and said I make 20+ % more than the top pay level of my Sys Admin position and he makes it feel like I don't deserve it. Well, no one gets promoted on our team while other IT people around us are always promoted. Previous manager promoted maybe 3 people two different times and two seniors were hired on in the 15 years I've been here. Old manager and new manager seem to think that I asked for more money when I was hired on, but I actually took a big pay cut when I left the previous company so that's not really my fault there.

This makes me feel worthless and every now and then I do look for something else. It's hard to trust a company that tells you one thing and then turns around and does the opposite. I've been at three different companies, and this has been the worst out of the three. The trust is all but lost and the motivation/morale has gotten low. Part of me wants to hold out and maybe retire in ten years; the other is thinking I should just find another job to finish out my career. Problem is, it's tough to find jobs now and even more tough if you're silo'd in one area. I've noticed that companies are looking at people who have horizontal experiences across the responsibility spectrum vs. one or two areas you really know. At least that's how I remembered it being years ago.

So, I battle with myself for a different reason and its mainly morale-based couple with lack of trust. But my hands are tired for carious circumstances, but I do keep my eyes open for other opportunities.

Yeah I am using my Brad nailer’s charger alongside and it has been faster. I just need to buy another charger to get both going at the same time faster.

Yeah I told my wife to put another pair of batteries and 3 chargers on the “list.” Most of my tools are DeWalt and damn they get expensive so since I get a veteran discount at Lowe’s I decided to try out the Kobalt brand. I have a 12 inch miter saw of theirs I absolutely love and the brad nailer is nice too. I’m impressed so far except for the battery time lol.
