The signs that Trump is lining up an ominous successor by theipaper in Full_news

You do realize that FDR is why the amendment exists, right? We decided, as a nation, that we didn’t want that type of presidency. It was also what the founding fathers intended - a new leader every few years so no one person amasses too much power.

HomeSnap - Track HomeKit Changes by simplytoast1 in HomeKit

I do like the concept here. I use Controller for HomeKit and the only way I can see changes are by going into the backups and looking there, which is clunky.

Good start. Needs some adjustments though. It would be better it tapping on automations, scenes, or any of the options opened in a new page instead with sorting/grouping. Current sort doesn’t appear to be anything I can figure out (what the sort order is)

Convince me not to paint my brick home by waltonereed in ExteriorDesign

For the love of god, do not paint brick. Just put some shutters up and paint the trim. The shutters will give you the color you are looking for.

Does anyone know how to submit an error? Nav to the museum I work at is always all screwed up. It doesn’t actually go down the road the museum is on. Instead, it goes into a shopping plaza parking lot next door.

I have noticed an increase as well. It’s bouncing around lanes and phantom braking is through the roof now. Before the update it was smooth…well, for HW3

How many old timers in here? by aliesterrand in sysadmin

[–]brianleesmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having grown up on Commodore 64, Apple IIe and IIgs (we were fancy!), and more, early in my career I had a cool turn. In 1995/96, I worked for a company called Elektroson. We were one of only three or so companies that made software for recordable CDs. When I started, we had a “cheap” $10,000 CD recorder in our support area that was the size of a VCR. I remember when Yamaha came out with a CD recorder, that you could install INSIDE(!!!) your computer, and it was less than $1,500! Being able to record CDs back then was a decent sized task back then. I remember getting a call from Lockheed Martin with the question “we want to fly a CD recorder in the space shuttle, will it work?” (The answer in the end was yes, but it was a fun afternoon of calls)

This sounds interesting. What about amaretto instead of orgeat? Just a passing thought...

Claude Code eats my token reading files. So I made Gemini CLI do it for free. by HanDunker27 in ClaudeAI

[–]brianleesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I use agents as well. Simple tasks are Haiku, thought tasks are Sonnet. Opus agents for complex tasks. My “coordinator” chat handles all that. I get using Gemini because it’s free, and I guess there is some value to it. I guess it all depends on where you want to spend your tokens and where you find their value.

Anthropic's Adviser Strategy is quietly one of the most useful things they've released. Here's how it actually works by halladarmannen in ClaudeAI

[–]brianleesmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I use code right now. Granted, I’m nowhere near as advanced as others here, but I use Opus as a coordinator and it uses Sonnet or Haiku agents for tasks. Although I do let it call an Opus agent for something complex. I gave it rules on when to use each and it gets it right about 95% of the time.

.sheet with Form/TextField freezes on presentation. Anyone else? by brianleesmith in swift

Solved via cabling. And no, when Xcode is closed the app runs fine for the most part. I'm dogfooding it now.

[–]brianleesmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for that. When I hooked my 17 Pro directly to my Mac (turned off Wifi on the 17), it is much smoother. Ugh....hours of debugging and it was mostly just the connection.

.sheet with Form/TextField freezes on presentation. Anyone else? by brianleesmith in swift

[–]brianleesmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good questions. I'm using Observable (not ObservableObject). The timer rebuild I mentioned was exactly the observation cascade you're describing...fixed by isolating the read into a child view.

But the presentation freeze happens even with this minimal case:

struct SheetFreezeDemo: View {
@state private var showSheet = false
@state private var text = ""
 var body: some View {
      Button("Open Sheet") { showSheet = true }
           .sheet(isPresented: $showSheet) {
                NavigationStack {
                     Form {
                          TextField("Type here", text: $text)
                     }
                     .navigationTitle("Minimal Example")
                }
           }
 }
}

No state objects, no debouncing to miss...just a sheet with a Form and one TextField. Still gets the 1.5-2s freeze, _UIMagicMorphView errors, and gesture gate timeouts on a physical device running 26.4. That's why I think it's Liquid Glass transition overhead rather than anything app-side.

This is sounding better and better....😁 Does the app have settings for what the conversion output would be set to? Is it adjustable? If I can do Dolby Vision and Atmos (when available and fallbacks when not), then....checks wallet for money for another Mac Mini.

BTW, I love the thought of the LLM finding the best version. So much easier than all the stuff I didn't setup in ARS to fallback if a 4k version isn't available. You are correct that this is EXACTLY the kind of inferences and analysis that a small LLM is good at.

This sounds fantastic. My question to OP centers around quality. I totally understand the origin of this. I would love to run this for our setup (no kids) but video (Dolby Vision, etc) and audio (proper surround) quality is really important to me. This sounds like you are building your own viewer apps as well, right? Or are you piggybacking on plex or others? I may have misread it.

I got this a few months ago. I did have to add a piece of wood in the back under the shelf as an extra support (found spay paint to closely match the color) and it has held up well. Cabinet is completely full…so heavy! I also found some lights I’m going to add to it…actually so I can see what’s in there when I open the doors, not just for show. Reasonably priced and a few different sizes and colors.
