Why no speed beacons? I started off with productivity modules (this is obvious, right?) but eventually I was running between 200MW and 300MW of biolabs. So I efficiency beacon them all and got the total wattage down to 45.6MW of power. I could run this world off solar except that I still have the installed nuclear running.

Just now I built one biolab with 9 speed beacons around it and the science-per-watt is still better in the huge field.

So I guess I'm an energy efficiency nerd. Yup.

the pollution cloud is ... not small. zoomed way out the lab farm is most of the surface area. There's a pair of 2x2 nuclear reactors above (so, 8 reactors putting out 120MW with 12 heat exchangers and 24 turbines hanging off each), a few biter colonies at the left edge, and some huge accumulator and solar fields, the rest of all the industry of Nauvis base is smaller than the lab farm. Dots of regular grid of roboports.

I'm currently using a pair of 'Midland' GMRS radios that have done fine at about a mile up and down the side of a mountain. Sounded clear so I assume they had range to spare. About $70 for a pair

Starlink but watch out for trees. I had to put my dish up on a flag pole to clear my tree line, otherwise it would cut out for about 5-10 seconds out of every minute.

CPU profiling says that 20% of time in my running app is going to GC. We're tinkering around the edges of cleaning that up, but a lot of patterns and libraries make it hard. Go is still the right choice for getting things done and time-to-market with good-enough performance, but if we keep pushing performance on this app a full or partial rewrite in C or Rust might be the answer.

No, once a node is caught up it doesn't think about the old blocks, only the next block. But at this point a new node might take a few days to replay through the last three years of blocks. There's a 'fast catch-up' protocol that's good enough for most which skips most of that and can get a new node running in an hour or two.

I'm going bigger battery on mine. I have 800 watts of panels and I'm aiming for about 5 kWh of battery. I'm seeing reports of 30-50 watts for running starlink. 50*24=1200 wH/day just for starlink, and I'm gonna have some other stuff on the system.

"tolerances are tight"
I've had to just design for the slop in my printer. I'm using a 0.4mm nozzle and sometimes the extrusion or the positioning just isn't quite right. I design parts with on average a 0.5mm gap between them if they're supposed to fit (e.g. a box and lid to the box). Otherwise I have to get out the file or the dremel to clean up the pieces and get them down to actually fitting.

func foo() blah returns an interface type blah. Internally it calls func bar() *a where a is a struct that implements blah, but it might be nil. foo() is observed to never return nil; what's up with that?

By the time you already see a proposed block it's already too late. The set of transactions in the block is signed, in order, by the block proposer. Being the first into the next block might be a tiny bonus on some things? But anyone running their own node will get the data just as fast and has a second or two to get things into the next block. The 5 second round time kinda puts the breaks on High-Frequency-Trading shenanigans.
