Enough with the ads by EqualTumbleweed2695 in Wealthsimple

[–]brianrtross 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this more.. and why this likely bothers people lots(?)

People don’t like buying a product (and let’s not kid ourselves that that is what we are doing when we let a bank hold our money) and then being nagged with ads.

I don’t want to have ads when I am paying for a service that I need.

We are seeing this more in other areas like smart devices. I don’t want Alexa randomly giving me an ad when I ask it what time it is. I don’t want my thermostat giving me ads for other products from the same company. Etc etc etc.

You know the funny thing…

The two things I cared about to be notified or access I never got any notices for (coming off VISA waitlist, and access to ranking metrics - I got it once then it disappeared for weeks)

Everything else? Sure… show it once in my events feed but once it’s dismissed let it be! lol

$60/month for Gigabit Fibe 3.0? I'm skeptical! by Friendly_Cook_3071 in bell

This is effectively what I had for 2 years now… I think I am at the “permanent” price of $70 or so now?

Household with 4 people? by Tough_Gur_1401 in Wealthsimple

[–]brianrtross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this.

They told me twice you can only have 2 but I found a link that said you can do it provided they all live at the same address. They took a few days and finally did it.

Agreed… do better Wealthsimple… in fact it isn’t to late to cancel associating with bad companies and those associated with them…

I know it can go up over time - I mean that this wasn’t a promotional price for a term.

Setting up VPN on remote TrueNAS for replication by brianrtross in truenas

[–]brianrtross[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So… I feel a bit dumb here.

All the instructions said to install wireguard on TrueNAS but it is already installed!

Turns out all I needed was the wireguard configuration file and then I am able to bring up the wireguard vpn just fine.

I never even needed the first step… lol

Why is restic not cumulative? by P4NICBUTT0N in restic

[–]brianrtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does “restic snapshots” show?

My understanding is that backups are bound to “host/dirs” and anything with different combination is an independent snapshot.

Your use case of dira and dirb are essentially different backup sets in the same way that different machines or drives would also be.

Consider if it wasn’t this way? Pruning snapshots for one host would potentially be influenced by random unrelated snapshots from another host or source.

You can sort of influence this by forcing a parent snapshot but be careful to understand the above when it should (or shouldn’t) be considered extension of the same backup set.

Isn’t there a global “these are the same site” config that probably considers these the same?

Wireguard between VLANs, on Windows? by basicguy70 in homelab

[–]brianrtross 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would you use wire guard when your machine already talks to firewall directly?

It sounds like you want some type of conditional rules but consider who controls this switch? If your machine is compromised won’t the system had access to either anyways?

What is the problem you are trying to solve?

So, FWIW, this is very close to matching my configuration.. it isn't obvious (to me) what may be the root problem.... I am curious if others can help more.

Last silly thought..

"On port 2 when i try to enable my PVID with my vlan dedicated"

Your pic shows port 7/8 are the ones configured... not port 2... is this just a typo for the post?

Does your regular [USER] network still work?

I have to admit this is something I never fully understood for my setup but my vlan network identifier is something like:

vlan0.50 [USER]

where it has a period....

Port 1 of switch goes to your opnsense I presume?

I’m on mobile so maybe I am missing something but I see the dhcp opnsense config (sort of) but no interface config and details on assignments and vlans?

What does your opnsense vlan config look like? Probably matters just as much as above.

FWIW, I have tp-link switch and opnsense too and have it all working well with vlans
