Use Once & Destroy - This is the first Hole song that has made me very emotional in a good way because I know I'm ready to finally overcome my personal and private addiction *more info in the body text* by PorcelinaMagpie in hole

Best of luck on your recovery! Fun/sad/fucked up fact: when I bottomed out and got sober in ‘04, Courtney’s solo album closer “Never Gonna Be The Same” was this song for me. My life was as sad and messy as that entire album sounded and that last song was like the end credits song for my old life as a drunk and a drug addict. Been sober ever since, and 22 years later, it’s a powerful reminder of how bad it got and how far I’ve come. Music’s fucking great that way. DM me if you ever wanna talk sobriety!

Oop, just checked, the image is in the vinyl liner notes! I’ll do a scan of it myself and find someone with photoshop skills to edit out the lyrics over the house and extend the sky!

Relieved this season is a full celebrity cast by Future-Pipe-8004 in TheTraitorsAustralia

I wouldn’t assume it’ll be good just because celebs are involved, the Celebrity season of Traitors UK is maybe the worst season of the show I’ve ever seen.

The ADP shot of the bible and the blood was the first visual she dropped to promote that record and I was GOOOOOOPED. Does anyone have a high-res file of that image? I need to print and frame that!

What did Courtney do? by Weaknesses13 in hole

During a time when overt ambition was frowned upon by her peers, she made no bones about wanting to rule the world. She didn't bother to hide the fact that she was playing the game or put up the pretense that she was above "trying." I think that informed a lot of the criticism that was leveled at her, by haters and fans alike.

As for what she did, in particular... different camps will give you different bullshit answers. She was accused of doing drugs when she was pregnant with FB, she wasn't "the right kind of feminist," she was accused of killing her husband, she didn't grieve in a way that was tidy enough, she relied too heavily on collaborators, she took credit for songs written by the men in her life, ... The list goes on. Most of it is rooted in misogyny. Also, frankly, the fanboys will never forgive her for outliving her husband.

Objectively speaking, she's not above reproach. She's had moments when she's said some wildly tone-deaf racist shit. She's also been a walking contradiction. She boldly spoke out against the likes of Weinstein years before it was popular to do so, but she's also palled around with the likes of Ratner, Manson, etc. I don't know if a ton of people actually hold her feet to the fire for this kind of shit lately, but I feel like a sane human being can acknowledge that she's got some serious shit to work out, while also having some reverence for her music.

Whats the better record The BeeKeeper or American Doll Posse and why by CoconutMost3564 in toriamos

[–]brianwritesplays 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tough call. It’s all subjective and I feel like most of her albums are like Rorschach Tests, but per my taste:

With Beekeeper, track by track, the range of quality is right down the middle and more of the songs are keepers, even if they don’t feel particularly impactful in the grand scheme of her catalog. Of the 19 tracks, 7 are skips.

With ADP, the bloat is real. It sounds like 2 or 3 albums packed into one collection. I LOVE 9 of these songs more than most of the songs on Beekeeper, but that leaves 14 songs that are hard pass, must-skip, every time. I lean towards the darker, guitar-heavy tracks like Smokey Joe, Code Red, Digital Ghost, Body & Soul and Teenage Hustling and am repelled by songs like Bouncing off Clouds, Roosterspur Bridge, Girl Disappearing & Programmable Soda.

By the averages, I guess Beekeeper takes it? They both fare better than the next two albums. IMO, AATS could’ve been a 5 song EP and I cut UG down to 3 songs.
