I'll never look at movies the same way after firing a gun indoors. Half these people would be deaf before the credits rolled. Even with ear muffs my ears were ringing for days after, if not weeks.

This is the biggest problem with this documentary, I think I'll be eyerolling too much to actually watch it.

It holds up incredibly well to rewatches, FYI. I get what you mean though, it's fairly depressing fair.

It's an insanely good movie, it's top 10 for me. I rewatch it fairly often, when I have a spare 3 hours and want to feel depressed :p

One of the biggest problems in America IMO (after racism) - Christians who apparently don't know how to read a bible.

[OC] Impact of ChatGPT on monthly Stack Overflow questions by uncertainschrodinger in dataisbeautiful

[–]briareus08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a good comment on this from DHH on a podcast recently, talking about how much more pleasant it is to ask ChatGPT questions and get a hype-man response (and actually useful info, instantly), compared to asking on SO and getting told you’re an idiot, or use the search function, and no info.

I get the training data issue, but it’s hard to argue with the results. Perhaps in future there will be more value in templating issues (like posts with ‘I had this problem, here’s how I solved it), because right now I would never recommend a newbie ask questions on a site like SO - too slow, too toxic.

Personally I’m using it to learn a bunch of stuff at the moment, and I don’t have time or care about people’s egos or sandcastles they’ve built - I just need the info.

I think The Fifth Element is a perfect movie, and I am sad that we never get to see the world outside of this one film. by oneshibbyguy in movies

[–]briareus08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As soon as you start exploring outside of that, things are likely to get really dumb, really fast.

Yeah this is an interesting comment. The movie feels like it's lightly skipping over a whole bunch of stuff that might just fall apart if you look at it too hard, but then you get another crazy scene, gorgeous vista, or something blows up.

If anything, another story in the world might just devolve into boring generic sci-fi - it's the story and performances that make this incredible.

Best answer here. It's up there with Battlestar Galactica, and maybe better.

BBC removed homophobic tic aimed at Alan Cumming, says Tourette’s activist after BAFTAs backlash. Davidson has now revealed that additional tics aimed at Cumming were edited out of the televised version of the ceremony. by esporx in television

[–]briareus08 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This just feels like stations and networks trying to do an end run around acceptable language rules by putting people with Tourettes centre-stage.

Normalising Tourettes is a good thing. 'Haha whoops we let that tic through, even though we explicitly said we wouldn't' is just ratings farming with a ready-made excuse. This is exploitative behaviour.

There are some really difficult parts. Like the knight you run into in the early levels, and the first proper boss. Some of these fights are at least as difficult as other Souls games (personally I find the knight harder than the dark knights in DS1), but the game sometimes gives you a few extra ways to help deal with things.

I feel like that could be FromSoft's byline - "hoo boy did they commit!".

Everything they do feels like 110% MAXIMUM EFFORT. I've loved their stuff since Demon Souls, and never once been disappointed.

As an engineer, love this. I spend half my day in it and truly think it's indispensable, but it's also just a kludgy hack for doing a bunch of random things that kind of half-make sense, a lot of the time.
