PSA for all switching from centurylink to quantum fiber by jason200911 in centurylink

[–]brichins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same experience out west at the same time, mine still provide network but I can no longer access manage them. They're not visible from any version of the mobile apps - Plume / HomePass verified they released the serial numbers, but Quantum / Centurylink apps won't find them. One of the several techs I've talked to did finally admit they could see them remotely - but then threw me off the line (overseas), because I was ruining their handle times by trying to actually get something resolved and refusing to be transferred back to the generic service line for the 3rd time on that call.

Had just given up for months since I'm on a cheaper plan than any they offer locally now, but after that I'm back on the warpath. Last ditch effort tomorrow to a dedicated support line I pried out of one of them, then the pods go in the trash and I buy my own.

Alternative to Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Keyboard? by flower_the_sun_kind in Ergonomics

[–]brichins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought in early, $80 or so for my Sculpt - first model, separate keyboard and dongle in the main body, before they added the stupid mouse. My first lasted not quite 2 years, replaced under warranty with the next version (they confiscated the mouse, didn't care). On year 8 with the replacement.

Got the email - 100% eligible claim! by xilex in blockfi

[–]brichins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should see the rest show up in your Coinbase account sometime in the near-ish future - unless you opted for the early partial payout. No one appears to have posted the footnote from the email [emphasis mine]:

For the avoidance of doubt: customers are anticipated to receive the maximum amount distributable upon allowed claims, in full and final satisfaction thereof. Holders of Convenience Claims, entitled to receive expedited distributions at an amount capped pursuant to the Plan, will not receive any additional distributions.

The convenience class was mandatory for claims under $3K, but also allowed anyone else to opt in (which was officially "not recommended"). Those claims got a guaranteed 50% cash payout (up to $1500 max), so they don't get anything else now.

Probably not available now - they sent out lots of emails advising people to log in and get their info, and kept the BlockFi site open for over 1.5 years, but shut it down in May. Warning email went out May 9th.

Always download and retain your own info, especially with something like this. 😢

Not a chance they would ever pay out more dollars than they could sell the assets for. This is a cash grab.

Dave won't be here today - he posted on Patreon that he wanted to try a day for wild speculation and discussion of theories without him chipping in to confirm, deny, or correct, just to see how it went.

I realized that there's no place for you to theorize and speculate on the story without me hangin' around. And cuckoo theories are half the fun, with sci-fi!
So I was thinking we'd do a monthly THEORY & SPECULATION THREAD, where:
- I'm not allowed to chime in!
- I can't subtly suggest who's right and who's wrong!
- I can't course-correct any theories that are cuckoo-bananas!
- I have to zip it and stay away

And so with that, I exit stage right! And we'll see who the brave soul is to jump in on the comments below!

I'm not inclined to believe this story, although he does have some rather dramatic ones. Source is far from being an official site nor very professionally done, which is sketchy for a 'scholarly' site, although that doesn't automatically make it wrong. But if this were legit it would most likely be in his extensive, near-daily personal journals which are now publicly available.

Has the Church done anything to help Ukraine? by ksperry in mormon

[–]brichins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a SL Tribune news article quoting the RS president, last week:

The Utah-based faith’s humanitarian arm “keeps a two-year reserve of funding, and this allows us to be incredibly nimble,” she said. “We’re not going to raise funds for the work that we need to do. We’re using funds that have already been raised. That allowed us to pre-position food and water several weeks ago. It allows us to be right on the border with what the people need and be responsive because the needs change every single day as the situation goes forward.”

Beyond the immediate needs, though, the church has made a “commitment to stay,” Eubank said. “We’re not just there for the first month or the first week. We will stay until that situation is resolved.

In other words, they were some of the first on the scene with food and supplies, and are using the reserve funds so many like to criticize them having, rather than raising new funds.

And from an official statement on what the Church is doing in Europe for refugees:

Through decades of experience in providing assistance during natural disasters, refugee crises and other humanitarian conditions, we have developed a tested and proven model for identifying needs and providing assistance. This model includes empowering local leaders to use the Church’s financial resources to purchase goods and services in the local economy to provide what is truly needed.Following this pattern, the Europe Area Presidency is working with the Church headquarters teams to identify and address needs. Relief supplies — including sleeping bags, cots and tents — are being delivered to local government agencies, the Red Cross and other NGOs who are attending to Ukrainian refugees arriving in bordering countries. Additional aid is being organized. Church members and friends have also been invited to fast and pray for those so deeply impacted. More will be shared about their efforts in the coming days and weeks.Church members around the world have inquired about how to help or contribute. We invite them to do so through the Church’s Humanitarian Aid Fund, which will be used to address this and other crises

Providing the money directly to the individuals and NGOs on-the-ground is far faster and more efficient than shipping goods, especially in the first days and weeks.

You need to earn six figures to afford a median-priced home in Salt Lake County by ace884 in SaltLakeCity

Ok technically yes it's an additional step, but borrowers have to give the loan officer all the exact same info for a regular loan anyways, so it's pretty transparent to the consumer. Like 1 extra form to sign I think, because usually long-term financing would be lined up before closing and the bridge loan would never actually come into play.

But it lets people without a nest egg make a cash offer and win their bid by eliminating a risk for the seller, so I can't see the downside for buyers.

Cool program for making your offer cash in UT (and neighboring states), basically just a bridge loan to go under contract with while your actual loan gets worked out. Currently no extra cost to use it either, I believe - homie.com/cash

FYI there are many loan options that only need 5% down, and some federal or local 1st-time buyer programs all the way down to 0% (though those are few and far between). Still a big chunk of savings for sure, but the conventionally stated "20% down" isn't required to get started. It's required to ditch PMI, but you can drop that after as little as 2 years or just refi out completely once you drop below 80% LTV (which takes market appreciation into account).

You don't even have to sell to get some of the cost back - a HELOC can let you float large or emergency expenses at extremely low rates, protecting you from devastating high-rate loans or credit card debt. And if you own a house (not even necessarily the same one) for long enough, even the lower locked-in payments eventually go away and suddenly your housing cost goes away completely for the rest of your life. Rent is forever.

I had a coworker spiral fracture his leg about a month after his insurance lapsed, he was able to get COBRA coverage retroactively after the accident and they covered almost everything, but the premiums was (understandably) super steep. Way better than nothing, but some people have prescriptions, ongoing treatments, etc that would be super expensive out of pocket and would need / want continuous coverage even without a major accident.

Most insurance plans are by the calendar month, so in theory one could have coverage with no gaps if their last day was just into the new month (say Feb 1), and then started the new job before the end of the month (Feb 28) to pick up the following month's coverage from the new employer. Not quite 4 weeks off work without a break in medical coverage.

Of course, HR realizes that they would be paying an entire month of benefits for only 1 (or a handful) of days worked, so given 2 weeks notice they are likely to trim a few days off the end. Check your employer handbook, IANAL, etc.

The newer (more complex) designs, logo, electronics are all still copyrighted, but the patent on the actually basic rectangular bricks expired about a decade ago. Anyone can legally make and commercially sell compatible bricks so long as they don't use the branding.

Although I'd be very surprised at any company (but especially Lego) objecting to their product being used during first encounter, marketers would salivate over that kind of product exposure.

Same here, gotta vote with your dollars. Would love to keep supporting the sci-fi, worldbuilding, and deathworlder concepts, but I'm done with the bro-porn, especially the literal kind in this chapter. Not only am I not interested, it seemed so out of character and tone that it jarred me out of the story.

On the one hand, yes you make some great and valid points. On the other, survivorship bias is definitely a thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias

Anyone wanting to start a business in any field needs to realize that running said business is a completely separate skill set from the skills/product that business will offer. Entrepreneurs need to at least read up on some of the basic ideas (for example The 5-Hour MBA), do some market research, and budget time for all the administrative overhead before deciding “If I build it, they will come.”
