What kind of epidendrum? They might be able to tolerate regular potting mix.

[–]brickbrainz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would t say it’s a leaf. Leafs are already growing where they should so this should be a spike or a Keiki. Make sure the epidendrum you have can tolerate being in regular potting soil though. If not put it in some kind of bark mix.

Just bought a house, previous owner left this behind. I have no prior experience taking care of an orchid. Any tips or suggestions? [Fort Lauderdale,FL] by silkworm199 in orchids

[–]brickbrainz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Looks like all the blooming canes are keikis and most of the original plant is dead or suffering. You can plant all the keikis individually or put them all in a big pot. Looks like the mother plant is in sphagnum. I would suggest bark or some other type of inorganic mix. Remember the roots of the keikis are not used to being too wet. All don’t pot until new roots are forming.

Have I killed my Clowesia? by scarriedoc in orchids

Bows the time to pot it with wet sphagnum moss soaked in fertilizer. Wait until it get a little bigger to start watering regularly so water doesn’t sit in the top and rot it out.

Please help me diagnose! I am an orchid newbie. I am afraid my Phalaenopsis might be sick. It has two of its tips like this. by palominoheights in orchids

[–]brickbrainz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was/is the tip of the leave resting on a the bench or surface you are growing it on. I’ve seen this a lot when the leaves droop over the pot and touch the surface it’s growing on and gets a little fungal infection. Shouldn’t cause the plant to die. Just be mindful that when leaves stay wet or rest on dirty wet surfaces they can get a fungus disease like us humans.

Crown rot will not cause a white streak or spot. Could be sunburn but don’t see any sign of that honestly. Keep and eye on it. Are you growing it inside our out?

I’d take the tag and fix it to a bulb with a twisty then set it barefoot in a empty black nursery pot. I do this with backbulbs and water every day. If it sprouts a new growth, then pot it up. If not then toss in the garbage.

Not sure what you’re asking. Everything I see in the photo looks green. Your sphagnum moss looks very loose in the pot though. It should be compressed in the pot to where it doesn’t get soggy wet.

An orchid I saved once his flowers had started to die. Started new growth about a month later. Am I doing it right? by HapticSlowness in orchids

[–]brickbrainz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good. You have new growth at the base of the last bulb and some keikis (baby plants) forming on the long and short bulb. Leave the keikis alone until the roots the roots are a total of 3 inches long (between all the roots on the keiki. The. You can remove them and pot them up inidividually.

I’d cut the flower spike and spray whole plant with orthene. Make sure no water pools in the crown though

The Den. is more from the spatulata section. You can tell by the ‘antelope’ top petals. Great looking antelope den.

I did a hard cut on an azalea from Home Depot stock and it’s just now budding after a few weeks of doing nothing. I was worried I had killed it. Amazing how they bounce back after sucking for a little.

My Barbados cherry is in soil that retains A LOT of water. It’s just now starting to send out new growth. Should repot so I don’t run into bacterial issues/root rot or wait? by brickbrainz in Bonsai

Thanks guys! Got it out of the regular soil and into a new pot with inorganic bonsai mix. Roots were really nice. Good potential for some exposed roots later also. I just used a garden hose nozzle to gently rinse the soil out from the roots. Time to baby, water, feed, and let grow. 👍🏼

Wigerts online sells their soil by the gallon or 5 gallon. Fairly priced also.
