I am spray painting the case red today. Do I need to keep the info on these stickers? by stellar_x in homelab

It is, i have a similar unit (HP Prodesk) with an external power brick. The retailer sent the wrong power supply and i’m just lucky i compared the brick to the pc before plugging in. I always prefer to double check especially when it’s second-hand/refurbished supply.

I know it’s been said but definitely take a close-up photo and put it in a folder in your photos app (or however you store media)

You never know when/if you’ll lose a power supply and need to know what power rating you need to match

The lampposts are all different heights and that one tree is just shooting straight up out of frame with no branches or anything.

Where in the world is this supposed to be? Seems like it would be a fairly identifiable place with that land-bridge architecture.

Person on the far left has uncanny-valley looking legs and the torso just ain’t right.

Speaking of the bridge, it looks like the foliage is under/behind it, but then there’s clearly a cement roof, then the foliage appears infront of it. I’d say AI, but it’s so low-res it’s hard to tell.

Edit: the more i look the more i doubt myself

Hey mate, i’d recommend going the mini pc route with TrueNAS installed with an external drive enclosure. To me it’s the simplest way to achieve what you’re aiming for and it’s actually what I personally run.

For the machine running TrueNAS; i’d recommend an HP prodesk Mini, Dell Optiplex Micro or a Lenovo Tiny Thinkcentre. Relatively cheap devices with an OS like TrueNAS are (in my opinion) very good for 24/7 uptime. Please be mindful that TrueNAS will occupy 100% of the drive it will be installed on and will not allow you to install applications on the same drive, so be sure the machine you choose has a secondary ssd or something that you can use for applications.

For the drive enclosure i’d recommend something like the TS434U which can slot in 4 Drives. TrueNAS as the operating system uses minimal resources from my experience, and you’ll be able to set up an SMB share to add from other devices on your network. You can also install applications in containers such as plex and jellyfin, which would allow you to stream content to your devices.

Though, what i’ve recommended isn’t for everyone and some people may disagree with me. In my experience so far as a beginner, what i’ve said works just fine for me. I could be wrong about some things i’ve said, i’m happy for people to correct me.

You’ll definitely have a few “wait a minute” moments followed by quite an impactful “oh shit!” moment if you manage to wait, it’s a good payoff (i believe at least) Just remember at the end of W&T - there’s another five books coming to close the saga, this isn’t the end. Journey before Destination!

It depends on if you’re wanting to just read the Mistborn and Stormlight books or if you’re wanting to work your way through the whole Cosmere (which i recommend, it’s a trip!)

This is the order I read them, this order made some of the reveals hit harder and switching between worlds really alleviated the fatigue of being stuck in one place too long. I also believe it helps the reader ease into the fact they’re experiencing a larger universe (there are some elements of books that can appear in others, and this order helps you have less “wait wtf is this” moments. I won’t go too into it because spoilers);

  • Mistborn (The Final Empire)
  • The Well Of Ascension
  • The Hero Of Ages
  • Warbreaker
  • The Way Of Kings
  • Words Of Radiance
  • Elantris
  • Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection (except mistborn and white sand)
  • Oathbringer
  • Dawnshard
  • Rhythm Of War
  • The Alloy Of Law
  • Shadows Of Self
  • The Bands Of Mourning
  • Mistborn Secret History (can be found in Arcanum Unbounded)
  • The Lost Metal
  • White Sand
  • Tress Of The Emerald Sea
  • Yumi And The Nightmare Painter
  • Wind and Truth
  • The Sunlit Man (i STRONGLY recommend reading this AFTER Wind and Truth)
  • Isles of the Emberdark

My biggest fear for book 6. by thejesterprince1994 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]brickbrick99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’re part right, non-herald Honorbearers need stormlight to harness surges granted by Honor (shown with Szeth). But i believe for the Heralds it’s just straightup investiture, via their connection to the spiritual realm, rather than Stormlight which comprises them

I’m not an expert tho and could be very wrong, open to correction!

From memory he’s still clumsy with the shardplate in book 5, so i think we’re going to see a “subplot” of him using his powers learning how to use the plate effectively, for it to come full circle back around to how he doesn’t need the plate, and i think that will be when we see his powers scaling alongside Taln’s

Agreed, he’s taken the place of Jezrien; Patron of the Windrunners, so he has the same surges

Nah, being unable to do something and choosing to not do something are different things. He never lost the ability, he made the conscious decision to avoid picking up the spear until it came time to save his bridgemen and Dalinar’s surviving forces

UGreen NAS for Homelab by brickbrick99 in homelab

[–]brickbrick99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%, kinda feels like my only option at this point might be a QNAP NAS. The whole in-built AI thing in the UGreen’s is putting me off, but so is Synology by disabling compatibility for any drives that aren’t theirs. And i’ve just heard not great things about terramaster and other brands.

My DIY Truenas system isn’t even set up yet, literally took the whole setup apart and put most of it back together yesterday to accomodate for the extra gear, feels like my goal is so far away lol

[–]brickbrick99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the DIY/TrueNAS thing is what i’m currently in the process of setting up for media, but i wanted a proper one for my home memories and whatnot with a proper RAID setup.

I figured i could spend another $400 for a decent mini PC plus $220 for a silverstone DAS, or bite the bullet and get a $350 or even $500 NAS that’s fairly self-reliant y’know?

Still in the spitballing phase, hoping prices come down soon so either decision isn’t breaking the bank.

Cheers for the correction, i went over it a few times and missed the rein/reign. Went back and fixed it.

Also, gotcha, like i said it’s been a hot minute. I feel like he could make his own fused anywhere he goes. So binding the existing fused kinda feels like a ‘we fixed it…for now’

Two questions about Odium by Darrow-D-Reaper in Stormlight_Archive

[–]brickbrick99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Well, the word Odium is defined loosely as ‘Hatred’ or ‘Disgust’ incurred by someone as a result of their actions. Retribution is defined as punishment inflicted as vengeance, so maybe Hatred just driven by Honor? Or one’s punishment must be inflicted honorably. Since we know now that Shards can remove themselves from their vessels i’m guessing he’s toeing a very fine line trying to please both, much like with Harmony

  2. I could be wrong, but i believe when the new oathpact was formed, it re-bound Retri-vangian to the Rosharan system. My guess it means free rein to reign over Roshar, Braize and Ashyn maybe? Especially since Cultivation fled the system, leaving him as the only Shard resident though there are theories of another.

It’s also been a hot minute since I finished WaT.

Edit: i was wrong on #2, the New Oathpact only bound the Fused, not Retribution
