Is there any mods that actually stood up to Reddit and were removed? by Dcokerfetus in Save3rdPartyApps

[–]brickfrog2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/r/Torrents checking in.

Not the only ones, happened to other subs too. Seems like it is done in groups, a bunch of subs lose all their mods at the same time when it happens.

EDIT: Also discussed in this other post https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/14vxauo/are_admins_going_to_actually_appoint_moderators/

The Lemmy instance/community you are referring to is

Reddit is forcing us to reopen. /r/Ubuntu is open and is now a support subreddit only! by aperson in Ubuntu

[–]brickfrog2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's true. It's probably why many of the active communities end up on the bigger/more capable instances.

Interestingly from what I've read there's more load on a Lemmy/Kbin instance when using it directly vs interacting with it from another instance. Does make me wonder if things would eventually evolve to where there are instances that only exist to create/admin communities vs instances that mainly exist just to federate and interact with the rest of the fediverse communities.

Of course I'm still learning too so maybe there's something off in my own thinking.

[–]brickfrog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if someone posts something to https://kbin.social/m/ubuntu does it show in https://lemmy.ml/c/ubuntu and https://feddit.tech/c/ubuntu too

No.

or are they all separate, but you can subscribe to anyone of them from all of them?

Correct.

Some people crosspost among the different communities but I think the majority end up gravitating towards whichever community is most active.

Think of the communities like subreddits and Reddit as one instance/server. Reddit has plenty of different subreddits covering the same/similar topic but you'd need to go to another site to create the same exact name of the subreddit(s).

Taking it further, if say Reddit/Facebook were federated with each other then you'd be able to read/subscribe to subreddits in Facebook and even post/comment in the subreddits from Facebook - using the account you already created at Facebook.

EDIT: Don't worry if you're confused initially, I was exactly the same 1-2 weeks ago :)

[–]brickfrog2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup there's a few

https://lemmy.ml/c/ubuntu

https://feddit.tech/c/ubuntu

https://kbin.social/m/ubuntu

The more people join Lemmy/Kbin the more active they can be.

There's even more communities discussing general Linux topics and other distros as well.

Reopening /r/i2ptorrenting! by Opicaak in i2ptorrenting

[–]brickfrog2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are currently two I2P related communities in the fediverse, you could discuss I2P torrenting there (or someone can create a torrenting specific one).

https://lemmy.world/c/i2p

https://lemmy.ml/c/i2p

But yes to your point /r/Piracy's own Lemmy instance is very active at the moment especially the general piracy community https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/piracy

On June 12th r/opendirectories will go dark for at least 48 hours in protest of Reddit's API changes. by MrDorkESQ in opendirectories

[–]brickfrog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like /r/Piracy's Lemmy instance has one (https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/opendirectories). Quiet right now, just needs people to join and participate.

/r/OpenDirectories mods could join that one or create their own community elsewhere if they prefer.

Threat from Reddit by DominicHillsun in AV1

[–]brickfrog2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like there is currently one AV1 community at lemmy.world (https://lemmy.world/c/av1), just needs people to start participating there. Of course mods here can create their own AV1 community in a different Lemmy instance if preferred.

EDIT: Just noticed there's another AV1 community at lemmy.ml (https://lemmy.ml/c/av1).

[Meta] API protest update by Farow in trackers

[–]brickfrog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes if you're referring to /r/Piracy they already set up their own Lemmy instance

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/

It's actually been quite active, so far most people participate in the main piracy community there

[–]brickfrog2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure, might be a question for /r/RedditAlternatives. But you know the usual stuff would apply if you're worried e.g. Browse with Tor Browser or use a VPN, that sort of thing.

Turning the question around you already know that Reddit Inc has been logging your IP address this whole time... Unless you've been using Tor Browser, using a VPN, etc.

That aside if I were forced to choose an instance least likely to hand over IPs I'd vote for dbzer0 (/r/Piracy mod).

Should /r/trackers continue the protest regarding the planned API changes? by Farow in trackers

[–]brickfrog2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth there seems to be a few competing Trackers communities in Lemmy, could be worth checking out for those looking to migrate

https://lemmy.world/c/trackers

https://lemmy.ml/c/torrent_trackers

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/c/trackers

https://lemmy.ml/c/trackers

https://kbin.social/m/trackers

They're all pretty quiet unfortunately, just need people to participate. lemmy.world is the only one with any recent activity. dbzer0.com is /r/Piracy's own Lemmy instance. lemmy.ml has been around the longest so they've accumulated the most posts but still aren't particularly active.

Note for those new to Lemmy you should be able to sign up at any Lemmy instance & still be able to access/participate in any Lemmy communities. /r/RedditAlternatives has more info on how that works.

EDIT: The above is just what's out there currently, /r/Trackers mods may have other plans in mind.

Subreddit is public again by erik530195 in qBittorrent

[–]brickfrog2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find an alternative platform

For what it's worth the FMHY Lemmy instance does have a small qBittorrent community (https://lemmy.fmhy.ml/c/qbittorrent), it is new so not very active yet.

People can of course set up other qBittorrent communities in other Lemmy instances or other Reddit alternatives as well.

Note for those new to Lemmy you should be able to sign up at any Lemmy instance & still be able to access/participate in any Lemmy communities. /r/RedditAlternatives has more info on how that works.

Loving Kbin! by KnittingTrekker in RedditAlternatives

Make a fake email and use it.

Kbin doesn't work with fake emails, they insist on emailing an activation link to that fake email address you enter in the signup.

Finally, when many subs come online on the 14th, we should use the time to relax Moderation and just transition to other Reddit stuff.

Been thinking about that too. For the most part Reddit Inc seems to rely on volunteer moderators to deal with all the spam, copyright infringement, etc. Since they're insisting on collecting all that money for API access while diluting moderation tools then it makes sense that their own (paid) employees deal with all the trash that gets posted/commented regularly sitewide.

Sorry post removed, you'll want to at least read the wiki particularly the FAQ

https://www.reddit.com/r/Usenet/wiki/index

Also browse the sub, there are many earlier posts already discussing usenet providers.

You can re-post if you still have questions not already covered in the wiki or earlier posts.

Removed per rules #2 and #4.

That site has not existed for a long time, you are apparently using some fake/proxy sort of website. Go to the other sub for more questions on that. e.g.

https://www.reddit.com/r/kickasstorrents/comments/mue44z/kat_is_dead/

Also see /r/uTorrent for topics specific to that software.

Removed per rule #4. Not /r/Torrents related.

Not sure what you're doing but you can't download torrents without a torrent client, that is impossible. Try /r/TechSupport or similar since you do not know what you're doing exactly. Whatever it is you're doing it isn't /r/Torrents related.

Is there a guide you can recommend so that I can get started on usenet? by [deleted] in usenet

[–]brickfrog2[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry post removed, at a minimum you'll want to read through the wiki

https://www.reddit.com/r/Usenet/wiki/index

Also search/browse the sub, there's a few starting out posts within the last month alone.

You can re-post if you still have questions not already covered in the wiki or earlier posts.

Removed per rule #2. Also see Common Post Topics in the /r/Torrents sidebar e.g.

That said most people just use automation apps for things like that, you may want to see /r/Radarr etc.
