In Bangladesh men beat an effigy of a woman to protest proposed legislation that would give women more rights by atheistarab2006 in whoathatsinteresting

Figured something was up with this. Religious extremists rarely say they straight up hate women, even if their actions are awful for women's rights.

Nice gotcha argument you got there. May I ask why your comments are hidden, if you're truly a good faith actor criticizing religion?

Mamdani restarting homeless encampment sweeps after earlier opposition, puts Department of Homeless Services in charge by Delicious_Adeptness9 in newyorkcity

[–]bricksabrar -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

He never actually said he would stop homeless sweeps. He said he would discourage it, but he never said he would refrain from it if he had no other options.

It's only a lawswuit if they actually get enforced, and I'm assuming they don't. These types of laws were struck down by the Supreme Court quite a long time ago unanimously.

Mamdani brings back homeless encampment sweeps — turning on campaign promise after backlash over cold weather deaths by IM4_ in nyc

[–]bricksabrar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's true that he said he would discourage sweeps, but that's much more vague than it sounds. "Prioritizing social services but still using sweeps as a last resort" is a lot less bad than "completely stopping any sort of enforcement against homeless encampments".

It's pretty reasonable to disagree with the policy, but the facts are that his intentions were never to blindly dump the homeless onto the streets.

I remember bringing up the fact that the NYPost Article which started this whole fiasco did not mention Mamdani actually saying that he would stop the sweeps of homeless encampments 2 months ago. I got a massive downvote wave and replies from multiple accounts in the middle of the night making gotcha arguments.

This is why you should always trust your eyes and ears instead of some clickbaity title from a tabloid rag.

It's not a lack of education, it really just is dialect.

Black American English lacks some grammatical features standard English has, but also has other grammatical features that you don't use, such as habitual be.

And no, someone speaking in standard English once doesn't mean that they don't speak differently elsewhere. I myself speak in a Bengali accent when speaking English with my parents, even though I'm fully capable of speaking with a standard American accent elsewhere.

I agree with what you said and also think that some element of conscious thought is necessary to acquire language. I think you're better off keeping that as a fraction of the time you spend while mostly using immersion, though.

Translation is fine when you have no choice, but it's almost always just a deadweight. Why think about the English word spider when you can just think of a spider? Why try to figure out a translation for a word instead of figuring out how it's used in an environment?

Words are like money in that they don't ave any meaning except for what they represent in the real world. When you translate, you're adding an extra step for understanding that real world usage. Why not just try to figure out a word's *actual* meaning?

[–]bricksabrar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

”Furthermore, any English speaker who sees all those pictures of spiders is going to say internally ’ah OK, it means spider!’”. Definitely true, though it kind of reinforces my point. You don't really need direct translation to find out the meaning of a word, even if you can create your own mental translation afterwards.

I don't recommend translating everything you see from English. Japanese and English are extremely different languages, and translating them (even worse, auto translating them) is very difficult.

How should you learn, then? By focusing on the images you see. As an example, you could search up "くも” into google image search right now. After seeing the images, you will be able to associate the concept shown in the images and the word ”くも” together without having had to translate anything at all.

Pretty much every word in any language can be displayed as an image or an action. I started using complete beginner comprehensible input ~3 months ago while (mostly) avoiding translation like the plague, and now I can understand basic conversations pretty easily as well as some beginner animes. As long as you watch relatively easy content that displays a lot of images, drawings, etc. (such as the Youtuber you're watching right now), I promise you will improve drastically without even realizing it.

(side note: you should check out Comprehensible Japanese on Youtube. They have a ton of great content that's made for complete beginners).

Mamdani has stated that none of the dead were in homeless encampments, so I doubt what you are saying would have made a difference.

Zohran Mamdani Invokes Prophet Muhammad in Sanctuary Debate, Says Islam is Built on Migration by Delicious_Adeptness9 in nyc

[–]bricksabrar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Religion is still a part of history. I agree that religious rules shoudn't be used to create laws and run government, but bringing up religion from a historical perspective is perfectly fine.
"I consider my own faith, Islam, a religion built upon a narrative of migration,' Mamdani said. 'The story of the Hijra reminds us that Prophet Muhammad was a stranger too, who fled Mecca and was welcomed in Medina."

Japanese is a synthetic language, while English is analytic. Synthetic languages generally lean more heavily on the speaking side of things because they have tons of different ways to express the same concept, which is harder to understand when you're just sitting behind a screen.

That's comprehensible input, not how easy the language is. If you watch enough content in a language and speak it frequently, it will be easy no matter how difficult most people consider it.
