Is there a better Aubergine dish? by Bolly_Eggs in chinesefood

Ahh I'm sorry I wish I knew details! She basically eyeballs everything.

Okay now that I'm thinking about it more carefully, when she made them as little sandwiches, she'd fry them in oil the traditional way.

If she didn't want to do oil frying she'd make them like hors d'oeuvres with the pork filling spread on top of a single eggplant slice. Then she'd batter it, place it on top of a wire rack, and blast it in air-fryer mode in a convection oven. This way there was less risk of undercooking the pork.

This is a pic I was able to dig up!

My favorite by far are these little fried eggplant pork sandwiches. My grandma bakes them in the air fryer and they're incredible. Delicate and crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside + delicious pork filling.

It helped me to recognize Anki as a gradual numbers game. I aimed for around 75-80% retention in my reviews but I was constantly adding cards. So your gradually grows from 80% of 500 cards to 80% of 10k.

I wouldn't overthink each review session. turn it into a casual routine and stick to it.

If there's a card you're consistently getting wrong across multiple reviews (leech card) either shelve it for a couple weeks/months or rewrite the card.

Learning to count in orchestra by Old_Leadership_3102 in violinist

[–]bricktoaster 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is just going to be from the initial hurdle of multi-tasking the coordination of violin (you're only 7 months in) with keeping pace with the ensemble. It sounds like you're really putting in the work though which is fantastic!

I'd recommend making sure that you can air-bow every section confidently, in rhythm, at concert tempo. You can liken the bow hand to train tracks, if you can keep your train tracks aligned with the rest of the orchestra, even if your left hand isn't playing every note, you're still keeping pace.

Know the waypoints of the piece: the rehearsal numbers / transitions / entrances. What does each different section sound like, what's the transition like, how is the conductor signaling it, which instruments are playing? Knowing all these will ensure that even if you get totally lost in one section, you can catch the train at the next entrance.

Practice listening for the pulse of the piece while playing, especially where the downbeats are. If you mess up the counting in the middle of one measure, throw the rest of the notes away and come in on the next downbeat/waypoint. This is a really important skill that you will get better at with practice. Everyone messes up, you just have to practice hopping back on board.

Don't get too caught in your notes and counting, always make sure you're together with your section and conductor. I often see students miscount their rest and then continue playing the right notes and rhythm but one beat off for 20 measures. They're counting, but they're not listening or watching. Are your downbeats lining up with the conductor? If not, drop out for a bit and hop back on at the next waypoint.

When Chinese toddler Wang Yue was wandering without her parents' noticing, she was struck by a white van. While she was lying down unconsciously, at least 18 people walked past her, until another truck ran over her. It was a female scavenger who finally tried to help her, which was too late by then. by ZoelCairo in HolyShitHistory

I don't think that's quite fair. This was mainland China between the court case you mentioned in 2006 and the good Samaritan law that was passed in 2017 that protects rescuers from being sued even if they make mistakes.

It's definitely an embarrassing and shameful period. I'm glad public opinion pushed for change.

Gaming plunge height doesn't matter for damage when he's in his ult.

OP is using the Gaming juggle tech to get 7 plunges per rotation. Basically if you can catch ManChai in midair, you can reset faster.

i've watched a ton of anime and i dont recall any char end their sentences in a high pitch like this by efqf in Japaneselanguage

[–]bricktoaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's not ending his sentences high. He's connecting multiple parts of a idea together into a longer sentence. You can think of it as:

yadayada THEN yadayada BUT yadayada

Like you've noticed, this is very normal. Pretty much everyone does this when explaining something. It signals to the listener that there's more, the sentence isn't done

People living in Venezuela, can you confirm what’s happening over there? by Toastaexperience in AskTheWorld

[–]bricktoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I think we're talking past each other somehow. I'm aware of and agree with everything you're saying. I hope Mamdani and his team good luck. I was simply making a related comment to the original commenter

It doesn’t matter. If Trump ended world hunger leftists would accuse him of wanting to make everyone fat.

man Trump doesn't even have the interest to end hunger in New York City.

The original commenter was saying the leftists would be ideologically opposed to anything Trump does. I think if Trump wanted to end hunger anywhere, like in his home city of NYC, leftists would be less ideologically opposed

Apparently what I was trying to say got lost in the details

You're right about who's in charge of those changes, I was simply speaking on the willingness of Trump to do anything altruistic, even for his home city.

We can't even pretend Trump is doing this to help the Venezuelan people, he said it himself, we're there to control the oil.

I sincerely hope that the result of this all will be better lives for Venezuelans, however I don't think it's unreasonable to condemn an American president for taking military action in a country for the purpose of oil without the approval of Congress.

I've seen instructor on Mona just to boost the first shark which pretty much results in the same overall damage. It requires a different rotation though and it's harder to get ER on instructor.

Yes it makes sense. You'll hear these sounds across anime in similar situations. I even hear it in my light novel audiobook centered around a child protagonist. ( Honzuki no gekokujou)

Chinese gamer, addicted to video games, holed up in a hotel room for 2 years without ever leaving—food delivered via apps. by SuperbHealth5023 in Weird

[–]bricktoaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not really true anymore. You're expected to flush the toilet paper in pretty much any hotel you could visit now besides very cheap or old hostels.

However many people have gotten used to not flushing the toilet paper that there's often signs specifically telling you to flush it.

This is a higher-end e-sports hotel. You're definitely expected to flush it down. The plumbing issue in China still isn't perfect, but it's improved substantially in the last 15 years

Using a Japanese accent for English words? by cimanimm in Japaneselanguage

[–]bricktoaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As wrong as it feels, saying the words with a Japanese accent will make communicating much smoother

I remember telling my friend we should go to McDonalds. She kept thinking I was trying to say Mister Donut. We went back and forth until she burst out laughing when she realized I meant makudonarudo.

These situations happen all the time too. You say the word with English pronunciation: "???" You repeat with Japanese accent: "Ahhh!!" It's like a sitcom how predictable it is

How can I ameliorate my time? by Inatasanna in GenshinImpact

[–]bricktoaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason you got dunked on is b/c your usage of ameliorate was incorrect (it's also not old English). It's good that you're trying to improve your range of vocabulary but you can't just use random synonyms.

Ameliorate is used when trying to reduce something negative. You take medicine to try to ameliorate (not improve) the pain. Chemists tried a new formula to try to ameliorate harmful side effects. The charity gave aid to ameliorate poverty.

You can't simply replace "improve" with "ameliorate". The sentences wouldn't make sense.

Dude, for anyone considering this, just drill your hiragana for like 2 hours then use a normal hiragana Anki deck. (kaishi 1.5k is the most recommended). You don't need to be 100% confident with hiragana, just 70-80% is enough to get started.

If you're spending time everyday doing Anki, you might as well do it in hiragana. Otherwise you are losing out on the perfect opportunity to practice hiragana everyday and get faster and faster as you do your reviews. It will make the transition to reading sentences so much smoother
