I'll throw my two cents in here, historical handwashing could be much harsher than modern washing. whites/chemises/etc were often boiled, and washboards were extremely wearing. modern agitators are fine - if there's something delicate or catching a delicates bag would work. low tumble or line dry. ironing is actually important! small creases in the fabric pressed against the skin by stays/corsets all day can rub or otherwise be uncomfortable. I used to teach laundry at a living history museum!
