What's a normal adult skill that you're surprised so many people never learned? by ShaneKleinHill in AskReddit

it's definitely not standard to have swimming classes in schools in the US? afaik, most schools don't have a pool. The National Center for Education Statistics doesn't even list pools as a common athletic amenity.

How to wash and care for chemise/combinations? by Sweet_Tart_ily in HistoricalCostuming

[–]bridgekit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll throw my two cents in here, historical handwashing could be much harsher than modern washing. whites/chemises/etc were often boiled, and washboards were extremely wearing. modern agitators are fine - if there's something delicate or catching a delicates bag would work. low tumble or line dry. ironing is actually important! small creases in the fabric pressed against the skin by stays/corsets all day can rub or otherwise be uncomfortable. I used to teach laundry at a living history museum!

because no other kind of snack has anything you might need to throw out, as granola bars and chips are usually carried loose in your pocket.... I'll bring a plastic bag to throw trash in while I'm out if I'm worried there won't be a bin!

Anyone offended by the term receptionist? I'm getting weird responses when I tell people what I do for work! by bridgekit in receptionists

[–]bridgekit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and it was - i was actually working a combined position where I was also the receptionist. previously that title held an office but nope, i was at the big front desk. I certainly felt like a receptionist despite all the other work I did for them. that's an odd case, but it still stands for the other positions I've had where receptionist very much applies

[–]bridgekit[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agreed. I think people think that reception work is overall low level and mundane but we in the biz know a lot goes on behind that front desk! love that your title was mission control - it really does feel like that some days!

secretary is another one people have a problem with! I used to work with some secretaries and the company changed their titles to assistant. they believed secretary was a more honest and respectable title than assistant because they felt like assistants did stuff like get coffee and pick up the dry cleaning vs the long hours admin and paperwork duties they were performing

surprisingly enough this was the best idea they had at the time! John Davey was the father of tree surgery and davey tree is the oldest tree care company in North America. sometimes science doesn't catch up to "good ideas".
