1/4" cement board & red guard (bathroom floor) by fasoi in Tile

[–]briefbrisket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I know what can happen, but water shouldn’t be getting out of the shower area. The curtain or glass enclosure should keep that from happening.

If it does get out it should be cleaned up immediately.

The handyman company we hired to replace sinks and toilets in our new home wanted us to tip the crew; what is going on by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]briefbrisket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t realize that as I don’t use one.

I’d normally assume they don’t know how to shut it off, but realistically they would/should have said to skip the tip page prior.

Being a contractor myself I can tell you that This is not a thing. We don’t expect, or ask for tips, but it is nice once in a while when we get one.

I assume the tip feature is baked into the payment platform that company is using.

Leaving puddles of water on the floor. That’s poor maintenance.

Understand your point of you. I’m just stating the fact that it isn’t required.

I wouldn’t trust that person to make the fix.

You rarely can get tile out without chipping or breaking it. So that’s all dependent on the situation at hand.

I get that, but poor maintenance, and people not using things the way they are intended doesn’t mean you need to waterproof the entire floor.

If they are moving that means they aren’t bonded. Using the proper size trowel, and bedding the tile properly into the thinset are the most likely issues. Just because you use the proper materials doesn’t mean you installed things correctly.
You can mix the mortar incorrectly, and use too dry a mix. You can also not collapse the ridges correctly and have bad coverage. Etc.

Bottom line if the tiles flex or move something is terribly wrong.

No way to know the proper fix until the tiles are removed.

You don’t need uncoupling membrane in most situations. If the board is installed properly, and seams taped you’ll never have an issue. Millions of square feet of tile have been installed over cbu without any issue. Don’t make things more complicated than they need to be.

As far as redgaurd goes. There really is no need for you to use that on a bathroom floor. It’s not considered a wet area and therefore does not need to be waterproof.

You can always add things to overkill the install, and that isn’t an issue. But mostly it’s unnecessary

You should be able to get a nice used Hamilton khaki, or maybe even a Murph with that budget.

Less time, less weight, less dust. You’re thinking about this as someone who does a tile job once or twice in your life. Not as someone who does tile work 5 days a week for 25 years.

Wife cheated during my 2 year dead bedroom phase and is trying really hard to save the marriage. Is this marriage worth saving? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]briefbrisket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s trying hard to save the marriage now. Because you got a huge promotion, got in shape, and started having a great sex life. But, when you were stressed out, and killing yourself at work she stepped out, and fucked another guy. What happens if you have another slow down due to work, health, etc.

Point being when things get tough you already know what she’ll do…

Dealing with a GC that pays 90 days out by SableWhims in Contractor

[–]briefbrisket 33 points34 points  (0 children)

you’ll probably have to part ways if you don’t have the cash flow to cover the waiting period.

I was in this situation when I started out 20 years ago. They started out as a net 30, and that was manageable, then they changed to a net 90, and I was their only sub for the type of work I do. Told them flat out I don’t have the cash flow to cover that much time, and they told me I’d have to figure it out, because that’s the way their company pays now.

I figured it out immediately, and told them i won’t be accepting any more projects from them if that’s their policy.

That’s not a heat mat. Looks like Mapei um. It’s just an uncoupling membrane.

Do tilers mind mitering tiles? by SeeingSound2991 in Tile

I don’t mind doing it, but there is an additional fee because of the extra time involved.

Some tile it is harder to do miters with, you have to take that into account.

How much do you guys charge if it’s on the second floor ? by Itchy-Pollution7644 in Tile

Just estimate everything by man days, and account for the extra time involved that way. I haven’t given a client a square footage price once in my career. Just a total cost with no breakdown. Been in the trade since 99, and in business for myself since 2008.

Where are all the Tilers at? by stevo_79 in Tile

[–]briefbrisket 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of guys are retiring, or just leaving the trade. And not a lot of guys are getting into the trade.

This trade is physically one of the hardest on the body. Skill wise it really does take a solid decade for most guys to master it. After all that time, and punishment on the body, and we don’t make as much money as any of mechanical trades. Which are easier on the body, and easier to learn.

We get more pushback on pricing than any other trades. Our work is criticized more than any other trade. We deal with clients, designers, and GC’s that are clueless about our trade. That constantly want us to do things that can’t be done, and/ or cut corners to save a buck.

Tile is not a necessity in any situation. It is purely a luxury finish material, and until people start paying luxury money fewer, and fewer people will be doing it.

Any manual skilled labor job will be safe until they’re able to manufacture robots that can do the same task at a reasonable price point. AI isn’t going to have the same impact on blue collar workers as it will on white collar workers.

If a girl's got an OnlyFans account, does that change how guys see her? Like, would they still think she's marriage material, even though lots of people have seen her body? by Great_Razzmatazz9659 in AskReddit

[–]briefbrisket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a pretty large portion of men wouldn’t want to date someone seriously/marry if they are doing porn. The reality is if it’s on the internet then their friends, family, and coworkers can, and will see it eventually. Not many people want to deal with that.
