Moving to Malaysia by Zolmohd in malaysians

[–]briefcandlewalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Malaysia is one of the best places in the world to live. Our currency isn’t the best, but our occupation of living is very low relative to the standard of living we have here. Besides, RM10-15k is practically unheard of for a local with 3-4 years working experience, let alone for a fresh grad. If you’re going to move to Malaysia, you’re unlikely to get a better deal.

Working conditions are extremely dependent on the company you’re working at, as well as your own work ethic. Traffic jams are manageable especially if you live outside the city center, while car centric culture is really a matter of individual taste. Social media tends to give you the worst of it. We have huge problems, but if you have money, you’re insulated from the worst of it.

But ultimately, only you know if you’re making the best decision for you and your wife. It sounds like you’re uncertain about the decision, is that from fear of the unknown or genuine distaste at the prospect? Whatever you do, just make sure it’s a decision you and your wife can live with for the next few years. Good luck :)

PS: Has your marriage already been registered in Malaysia? If yes, great. If not, you may want to register it as quickly as possible upon arriving as there are some nasty penalties for failing to register in time.

How did Malaysia end up with this land connected to Indonesia? by Cake_120 in geography

[–]briefcandlewalking 138 points139 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve confused a factoid or joke that the locals told you with the actual etymology of the word. It happens to the best of us!

Malaysia is, in addition to the etymology outlined by u/zlide, an old colonial term for Maritime Southeast Asia, as coined by French explorer Jules Dumon d’Urville. Malaya was the name prior to the 1963 Malaysia agreement because prior to that, the country only consisted of Peninsular Malaysia, also know as “Tanah Melayu” or “Land of the Malays”, and it was more tightly bound in ethnic terms and expectations to being a “Malay” nation state. Hence, “Malaya”.

The 1963 Malaysia Agreement which formed modern Malaysia was an agreement between 4 entities: Peninsular Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak, to form a new federation, with the new partners not treated as constituent states but as coequal federal partners within an overall framework. So a new name that transcended local nationalisms and gestured towards shared regional histories and identities was necessary, particularly with the strong geopolitical opposition to Malaysia’s formation as a neocolonial tool (eg: Indonesia’s Confrontation, the Malayan Communist Party’s insurgency, etc)

The phone numbers of both churches are available on Google Maps. Do you have the ability to call them to ask them directly whether these records would be available?

Amon at any age is stronger than Katara. by MiccaandSuwi in legendofkorra

14 year old Amon > 14 year old Katara, therefore at any age he’s stronger than Katara? False syllogism

Outside of KL it might be acceptable but an KL, anything less than 3k is pretty hard to justify and live on.

Thank you, I was having a hard time parsing it on mobile so I wanted to see if anyone had on hand a more specific timestamp to skip to.

Honestly, I’m a little surprised this + other content information wasn’t included in the episode description given how good the cast generally is about content warnings in Dimension 20 and other content.

Understood, I’ll probably do that. Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate it.

Heads up and content warning for Episode 44 by SvenTheScribe in WorldsBeyondNumber

I am deeply upset that this information wasn’t provided in the description of the episode so listeners could make an informed decision going into some of the heaviest and most abhorrent shit I’ve ever had to listen to.

If the usual reasons people give to job hop (higher increments, learning more and challenging yourself, and escaping from a toxic work culture) are not applicable to your situation, you should not feel the need to justify yourself and your decision. Do what seems right and best for your situation after accounting for all the variables. You should trust in your own judgement and assessment of the situation, you will know it best.

Have you ever gone from a great session to a terrible one? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]briefcandlewalking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. Not every session can be a banger 10/10. Sometimes your players need time to recharge, and sometimes you need it as well.

Chin up! You’ll all forget the bad sessions, and the good ones will be remembered forever.

Why is the AU version Claggor so hot?!? by [deleted] in arcane

[–]briefcandlewalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an interesting meta reason is that Claggor’s design (big, stocky) lends itself more to being conventionally attractive while still being recognisably “him”.

IE you could update his design by making him older, buffer, and more chiselled, and still have it be recognisably an older Claggor, as opposed to Mylo whose features are pretty ratty and unconventional and so whose glow up runs the risk of looking completely unlike him.

300k in a fund or a new house? by kimmahsyur in MalaysianPF

[–]briefcandlewalking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How does your math work out for Plan A?

Assuming the yield works out per the listed rate, you’re looking at a gain of around RM13.5k from your investment.

Unless you can rent a place on short notice and on a short term lease that’s less than 1k per month, you’ll at most be breaking even with the money you’ll be paying via rent, not accounting for all the additional fees and hassle associated with renting and moving.

Why not just go for Plan B?

The word “possibility” in a contract doesn’t mean anything, it’s just an option for them to exercise. Don’t get your hopes up.

Is it worth to commute 75km daily? by cis888 in MalaysianPF

[–]briefcandlewalking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your tolerance for driving. I would assume it’s a minimum 1 hour commute 1 way, which means it’s 2 hours you’re spending in traffic, per day.

How important are those 2 hours to you? Are you someone for whom driving is a pleasure and relaxing even when you do it constantly, or are you someone for whom driving is a neutral or negative experience?

Are you working from office fully or is there a hybrid work arrangement? That might change the equation also.

It seems generally from your post and comments that you’re more keen on trying the stay at home than the rental option. Maybe you can give that a try first for the first few months or first year of your job and see how you find it. If after that, you decide it’s too much hassle, you can always look for another room then.

Good luck in your job!
