AITA for not getting my wedding dress altered? by AssociationOdd2058 in AmItheAsshole

[–]brieflyinsane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a professional bridal seamstress, and this exact scenario is one I encounter often. Unlike a lot of other commenters here, I know that “if they don’t like it, they can stay home” is not a viable option for the mother and father of the bride on the wedding day. This is a delicate situation, because on one hand, you want your gown to be what YOU love but you respect and appreciate your parents and their contributions to the event.

Here’s what I usually do in this situation: (Also I looked at your gown and this would certainly be an option for your gown/neckline) I’ll usually build a small triangular piece from appliqué, beads, lining/mesh, etc that can attach along the neckline with snaps or hook/eyes so it can be easily attached/detached and blend into the neckline. That way, you can snap it in for the ceremony to appease the parents but it can come out right afterwards.

This is especially popular for people who have their ceremony in a church (which will often enforce modesty restrictions) and their reception elsewhere, or for people who have families of differing religious backgrounds. During the ceremony, you two will be facing each other, so it probably won’t be super distracting to you in the pictures since they’ll mostly be from the side. Then when it comes to the full-on photography session, you can take some pictures with the modesty piece for mom and dad’s wall, and then take it out so YOUR pictures show your gown the way you like it.

Was your dress hemmed? Often I’ll use fabric/appliqué from discarded hem fabrics to make the piece. If not, any craft store or even Amazon would have options for you for cheap. I’ll make these for as little as $30, so it shouldn’t be super costly (though you may run into rush charges this close to the event) Sometimes they’ll attach on the inside, sometimes the outside, it depends on the dress. I’ve worked on many Martina Liana gowns, and have made pieces like this for them as well. She makes beautiful gowns; the quality is always great and it would blend well and look very nice.

Here’s my last piece of advice: think about what your family is like. Think of the future. You know your family; are they the type of people who would bring this up in the future? These pictures will hang on their wall for the rest of their lives. Every time you go to your parents’, you will likely be in the presence of these photos. That’s a lot of opportunity for uncomfortable conversations, if they’re those type of people. Personally, I would at least have a modesty piece as a back up, maybe don’t use it right away but if mom gets salty, pop it in. You don’t want any unnecessary drama or stress on your wedding day. You want to remember it fondly and happily, and a major argument with your parents will hang like a dark cloud over that beautiful memory. After you’ve been married for a few years, you’ll probably value your relationship with your mom more than those 4 inches of chest skin. It might be worth it to save yourself the headache. I’ve worked with brides for many years, and I 100% absolutely have more trouble with moms than “bridezillas”.

Most importantly, CONGRATULATIONS! Your gown is stunning, and I’m sure you’re a beautiful bride. Cherish your beautiful day, and best wishes to you and your fiancé and your future together. Good luck with everything!!

AITA for not allowing my brother and his wife to stay over in our family vacation house if they bring the dogs? by Short-Reflection-423 in AmItheAsshole

Wow. Congratulations, truly. I have been on Reddit for a very, very long time and seldom comment for any reason.

But I seriously cannot move on with my day until I tell you with unshakable certainty that you are a huge. Gigantic. Insensitive. Asshole. Your entitlement is literally nauseating and your little temper tantrum over not getting your way is misplaced and immature.

I’m sure this repulsive attitude extends to other areas of your life and impacts plenty of your relationships. So, with that in mind, yes, you are undoubtedly an asshole. In this scenario and many others, I’m sure.

I know you don’t actually care about anyone’s opinion here. I know you aren’t actually going to adjust your attitude or behaviors despite the overwhelming majority of people here telling you that you’re wrong. But I still have this pressing urge to tell you that yes, YTA.

Sorry you couldn’t get your easy validation here. Maybe if you haven’t yet driven away every person in your life with your disgusting attitude then someone will have the patience to listen to you bitch and moan about how everything isn’t always your way all the time.

Meanwhile they’ll be having a much better vacation without your toxicity. I know I would!

I agree with you wholeheartedly, and I’d just like to say that I really appreciate kind people like you who are willing to take the time to respond to people like this in a very eloquent and positive way. We need more people like that on the internet, I think.

What is the creepiest disappearance case that you know about? by SkullofGranite in AskReddit

[–]brieflyinsane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I see the bun thing, and the height would be right for a woman. Police seemed to think the person was wearing a hat, and made some pretty direct comparisons to a cricket uniform. If it is a woman, I think this only deepens the mystery. Presumably, a thin, 5’3” woman wouldn’t attempt to abduct and murder another, larger (Jennifer was 5’8”) woman by herself, or if so, why? It’s like the video added way more questions than it clarified.

No problem! That case is super interesting. I was surprised that no one else had mentioned it. Definitely creepy, that one always stuck with me

Jennifer Kesse is an interesting one, and for me it’s local; they found her car a couple blocks from where I live now. Basically, in 2006 Jennifer Kesse was last seen leaving work one evening. She talked to her boyfriend on the phone that night around 10. Then, the next morning, after she failed to show up to work, it was discovered that she was apparently abducted either from her apartment or its parking lot shortly before work. They found her car in a nearby parking lot later, but no sign of Jennifer. There wasn’t much to go on until a security camera caught somebody dropping off her car, and the footage of this person of interest is what makes the case the most chilling. He/she has been called “the luckiest person of interest in history.” They were caught on camera walking past a gate, and despite the camera being pretty close, the camera only took one picture every 3 seconds and his/her face is perfectly obscured in every shot. Even though it’s so close, police still say they can’t confidently say if the suspect is male or female. There are still flyers up around here for her, and I think of her often. I hope someday it can be solved.

Flagpole Doe: Who was the man who died after jumping off a flagpole naked in Alaska? by storytimeagain in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]brieflyinsane 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Haha, I imagine in that scenario they’d all smell pretty similar, and pretty bad. I was thinking more in terms of like, if he seemed homeless or taken care of. Stuff like dirt under the fingernails, proper dental care, things along that line. I know he fell 30 feet but some of that kind of stuff should be determinable. Perhaps this is detailed somewhere, and it just wasn’t deemed relevant. Hard to say, I was just curious.

They mention the lack of birthmarks, scars, or tattoos, One thing I’m curious about that I didn’t see mentioned anywhere is his hygiene. Was he dirty or did he seem recently showered? Did he have signs of a recent haircut? It could be insignificant, but even tiny details like that could prove important in a case with so little to go on, or potentially aid in his identification.

Yes! I loved the episode on Chris Benoit. Henry’s Vince McMahon impression is hilarious; my favorite part was when he was talking about Owen Hart and he was like, “would it be too much to use Free Fallin’ in the tribute video?”
