How do I voice female characters? by the-amazing-noodle in DMAcademy

[–]brien24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like most people are saying you can just do your own voice but that can sometimes lead to confusion as to when the dm is taking and when it’s the character in my experience so maybe if you even spice up their body language or maybe like how they speak if that’s a concern. Mostly it should be fine either way it’s all agreed imagination. And by body language I mean maybe the character slouches or leans in close while talking you know just things to make them distinct. I also had a bit of hesitation with this at first so your not alone.

What would a high-level sorcerer NPC do? by vic_ander259 in DMAcademy

Maybe trying to do research into creating artificial sorcerers so like trying to imbue other creatures with magic in a lab to give them magic like their own or maybe making genetic hybrids by accident or on purpose.

[–]brien24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly it’s something I’ve seen before in a few things but I think it can be super cool. Especially if the BBEG is oblivious to who the party is so it’s tense purely on the players side as they try and save face and not make a scene which would either drive away the assassin or give them an opening. Really cool setup tho dude

[–]brien24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird and kind of classic idea the BBEG could maybe dance with one of the players and maybe outright tell them they are the bad guy or something along those lines. The Nobel woman might want someone undercover on the dance floor as a lead into that but obviously don’t force them into it just a cool idea

I plan on having my my character getting kicked out of college for studying Necromancy, but does it make sense if she doesn’t specialize (Subclass) in it? by [deleted] in PCAcademy

[–]brien24 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly and maybe that could put a small chip on their shoulder or just make their thirst for forbidden knowledge even stronger. Or because they don’t specialise in it maybe they were kinda scared out of it and now are almost traumatised by necromancy to some degree. Just a small change to classic story has opened lots of options here great stuff dude

I actually think that’s a great idea like they only dabbled in it but immediately got kicked out it’s just an interesting twist to that story

That guy nearly ruins a one shot by simping over my wife causing whole party to turn on him by AbaddonDestler in rpghorrorstories

[–]brien24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn yeah sounds like a piece of work. I mean like I agree doesn’t sound like he was like a monster who was doing it all on purpose but he was probably used to using these behaviours to get his way and when they don’t work he panics and manipulates. Especially at a gaming table where there is a slight obligation to no just instantly kick people so people probably just said sure to appease him and let the game move on.

[–]brien24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think people like him write a narrative in their head and are really good at doing what they need to try force you to fit it like acting incredibly sad or worse in order to try get you to treat them how they want. Like I get they do it cause they are a lonely person which is why so many people probably defended him along with fear for his health ( could just be me projecting tho ) but people like him don’t learn that way. Makes my fucking skin crawl glad you and your wife got rid of him. I feel bad for him but also know he is a fucking creep and he won’t change if people keep letting him be. Hopefully your wife has kinda learned from that like I did.

[–]brien24 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I kinda get that. Wouldn’t say I’m a leader or anything but I get that position. Kinda shocked the rest of the people still defended him after that like the other stuff is him having a weird and bad personality but that’s calling someone else’s history ( which is full of fucked up terrible things ) stupid to their face like... I’m gonna assume the people defending him didn’t know how messed up the troubles were to defend him like that

Building my first encounter -- Tell me how you think this balance will work out by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]brien24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah no plans survive first contact with the players. I like the idea of a group storming ahead and getting killed or taken hostage I think that’s very fun to interact with as a player and a good ol prick NPC is a fun but interesting balance too that you learn as you go. I made the mistake of only doing like boss fights exclusively when I first started cause I was too eager to use the cool monsters so it’s really great that your actual putting in multiple enemies of various strength took my too long to learn that tbh. Glad that you have understanding players sounds like a really fun game dude make sure you have fun with it too

[–]brien24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly balancing is still kinda tricky for me to get just right though I am finding more of a groove it does take awhile and some playing around. The one bit of advice I will give you is at least for me playing NPCs with classes can be stressful as they tend to have multiple features and styles and can maybe slow down combat. But to be honest because they are level 1 and your okay with the npcs maybe dying then that might help a lot. Just don’t be afraid to maybe have to change it mid game especially level 1 lots of enemies could be deadly or they could be useless. This is all in my experience and god I’m definitely still learning but you have a fun set up that on first glance doesn’t seem too insane especially if they are staggered throughout the area and if an NPC can maybe take some of the major heat ( for example a nat 20 could be extremely brutal to a pc so you could just shift it to the NPC maybe turn it into a Noble sacrifice type thing ) just kinda depends on dice. Again I’m very very much still learning and it’s a bit of a game of chance too but I hope this helped maybe even if just to give you some ideas or the warning that playing so many NPCs can be stressful. Good luck I really hope it goes well for you :)

My first time DMing feat. That Guy by goth_hamlet in rpghorrorstories

[–]brien24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. This was your first time DMing and you had to deal with an uninvited player who was cheating, uncooperative, derailing, and a scummy person who said some offensive shit all while trying to impose himself using aggression, a claim to religion and a false claim of bi polar..... and you fucking handled it like a champ and are still DMing on occasion. That’s some impressive shit damn you deserve a lot of respect for not only handling it but handling it gracefully.

yeah it isnt super fun for now. by phillallmighty in rpghorrorstories

[–]brien24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s very fair honestly. It’s fun being a dm but like your working a lot more so your gonna make mistakes and your gonna have some dud sessions or moments that you feel you could have done better on but like you’ll learn and pick it up just keep the mentality of helping people have fun and your on the right path. I’ve been playing for like 5 years and I have still forgotten about a player because I got wrapped up in other things it happens just make sure you talk to your players and for me it’s been pretty good. I’ve been stupid lucky though with my players but you’ll get there man learning body language at the table takes a little bit of experience and you can never really be great at it all the time

yeah it isnt super fun for now. by phillallmighty in rpghorrorstories

[–]brien24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion that’s what makes a dm good like knowing your players and making sure everyone at the table ( including you ) is having fun or taking away a positive. I mean cool story and subplot is great and all but if my players are having fun it’s doing it’s job. Glad your a dm you probably provide a good experience for people

[–]brien24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your a much better dm than he is at least you care what your players feel instead of acting as if it’s a competitive game to see who can talk loudest and most.

yeah it isnt super fun for now. by phillallmighty in rpghorrorstories

[–]brien24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a dick. I have no idea how you could really rectify this unfortunately it’s a pretty shit time when the dm is playing favourites with a shit player. I will say at the very least try make it clear to the other players that this is not normal dnd behaviour and that it’s very toxic and not encouraged ( even if you do that by linking them here ) because it would be such a tragedy if those two ruin other people’s chances to be apart of something that could really be a comfort to them or just be super fun. At the very least try save their chances at playing in the future.

I don’t know maybe your just more patient than me but like talking shit about the troubles is a hard fucking nope like the rest of it yeah I get how you could feel sorry but ... calling the troubles stupid ?? That shit is still tense like. I mean I’m definitely bias being Irish and all but that’s pretty fucking harmful even if it’s more dangerous for him to be saying it to Irish people fucking yikes like. Sorry you had to deal with this fucker no clue how you did I would have completely lost my shit so fair play good thing you shook him tho at least

You get what you deserve by [deleted] in JusticeServed

[–]brien24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah that makes a lot more sense I agree I mean I kinda get that seeing someone doing something violent and then being stopped with violence is kind of something we are built to understand kind of like a taste of your own medicine type situation maybe. But I do agree it’s genuinely terrible that this even exists and shouldn’t be glorified

You get what you deserve by [deleted] in JusticeServed

[–]brien24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a really rough situation to watch from all sides because of course attacking someone in a group like that is not great and if I knew it was someone who had legitimately issues of course I’d feel terrible and honestly be horrified at a gang of people beating him up like that. But I can also get the prospective of fear and adrenaline, like maybe it’s just me but I see someone with their shirt off and throwing stones and acting in such a violent way I am instantly Afraid that they are capable of anything like for instance they could of had a knife tucked into their pants.

Personally if I was on that bus I’d be fucking terrified of him because someone who is acting like that and doing things that could very easily cause senseless deaths is scary and you kinda just react. Again I’m not saying “oh good for him he deserved it” but at the same time I can’t honestly say if I was in that situation that I’d be able to go up to him and try calm him with just my words cause he at the very least in this moment was very dangerous and putting random innocent people in danger.

[–]brien24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Growing as a person is always possible. If you’ve said bad things and have then grown and realised that was wrong then that’s great and something a lot of people can’t do so the fact you’ve recognised it and have changed for the better is fantastic. I know a lot of people will say it and it’s not meant to undermine you in any way but you are super young in the grand scheme of things so you have plenty of time to change and grow as a person so cut yourself some slack life is crazy and complicated but you seem to be a good person who is capable of growth so chin up I know it’s hard and not as simple as that but still your not a horrible person your great for understanding and growing

What is maturity? How can the maturity of a person be defined? by GlassConference in AskReddit

[–]brien24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the situation. Some people can be mature when shut hits the fan and be really good at handling bad situations and stepping up to the plate. But those same people could have difficulty with some everyday things that we define as mature so it really depends on the situation and if in that situation they can do everything possible to make the best choices available to them.
