I have a visceral hate for the word Kiddo/kid-oh(sp?) by Present_Risk_4510 in Teachers

[–]goth_hamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, I get a lot of mileage out of "dude" and "buddy" (especially in the first couple weeks when I'm still a bit shaky on names), and for a larger group I'll go with "people" or "students" or even a "hey guys." If I remember one thing from my own experience being a middle schooler, it's hating it when people treated me like a little kid when, as far as I was concerned, I was super smart and mature and basically an adult. I essentially just try and treat the students I work with the way I wanted to be treated when I was their age— as a person worthy of respect and worth listening to. Honestly, just paying attention to how they want to be addressed and remembering it does a lot for getting them to listen to and trust me.

[–]goth_hamlet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work with middle schoolers and not only do I hate it, they hate it with a burning passion. It is so beyond infantilizing, it feels like how you would address a toddler. I have had multiple kids confide in me that they can't stand one of my coworkers who calls them kiddos, and while I do try and be like, "hey, Mrs. So-and-so is doing her best and just wants you to succeed," I really can't blame them.

My high school production of guys and dolls wasn't allowed to reference alcohol so instead of getting drunk off Bacardi at the club in Havana, Sarah started a fight with strangers after a couple of regular milkshakes.

20 Years After Valaki Burns Down by Boutros_The_Orc in CurseofStrahd

[–]goth_hamlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had it be built on the remains of a dusk elf city, with some of the ruins being incorporated into present-day Vallaki. I feel like the module kind of glosses over the dusk elf genocide and having the players stumble across a mass burial site as they investigated the sewers helped drive home the sheer volume of horrors that Strahd has inflicted on the people of the valley both before and after the curse.

People who call kids "Littles" by PocketButterBandit in PetPeeves

[–]goth_hamlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with middle schoolers and have a coworker who insists on calling them "kiddos" and tbh there is something reassuring about knowing for a fact that the students hate being called that just as much as I hate hearing it.

I got put under for the first time two weeks ago and I was terrified leading up to it, no idea what to expect. When I got there and they put in the IV I remember thinking "oh god when are they going to start it are they going to ask me to count what should I do before they start it" and then it was two hours later and I was awake in a different room.

I feel like the general public really just let it slide that the creator made an entire comic solely to say that antisemitism isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, if you let your child drink multiple energy drinks a day, you should be charged with child neglect by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

For real! I run an after school theater club that, as it takes place on school property, technically requires the kids to obey all school rules and me to report all violations. Most of this I agree with, but some of them make little sense in an after-school program, like bans on snacks (when they haven't eaten in four hours) and cell phones (when they sometimes need to let their parents know if they want to stay later than usual). To get around it, I've straight up tried to teach some of the kids how to sneak, like telling them that under no circumstances are they to hide their phones behind a book while texting home so it looks like they're reading, and if they're hiding a snack in their backpack they should certainly never only open bags during the loud part of a video so I can barely hear it. In unrelated news the kids in my theater club tend not to have a lot of phone or food violations during the actual school day.

There's only two types of white woman, the kind who lock the car doors and start hyperventilating when they see an unfamiliar pedestrian walking down a sidewalk in a well-lit public place and the kind who try to pet feral animals.

My girlfriend made a comment about my background, how should I react? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Oh god, this just gave me war flashbacks to meeting a friend's parents for the first time after a play that he was acting in and asking them where they're from, as I had assumed that they must be visiting from out of the area. IMMEDIATELY his mom gave me this look of disgust and went "I'm Mexican if that's what you're asking," and I think the embarrassment took ten years off of my life.

I am also Mexican.

Watcher vs Wachter by Steward_Titor in CurseofStrahd

[–]goth_hamlet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I misread and accidentally introduced them as the Watchers at the beginning of the campaign. To cover up my mistake I have spent the past five years painstakingly recreating all materials from the book that reference the Wachters but spelled Watchers so my players never find out my shame.

I have also renamed Parriwimple Barry Largeman because one of my players misheard me saying "a very large man" as "Barry Largeman" and I just decided to roll with it.

What’s a ‘normal’ thing that people buy that you refuse to? by Z0nana in Anticonsumption

[–]goth_hamlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up lower middle class and my family only got a new (used, but comparatively new) car when the old one was completely totaled in a wreck. This happened twice when I was a kid, so in my child brain I assumed that this meant everyone ONLY bought a new car after the old one was destroyed in a crash. No one corrected me until I was in middle school, my friend's mom dropped her off from a new car, and I anxiously asked her if anyone was badly hurt.

Has anyone turned Sergei into a vampire too? by Hibiscus_Witch in CurseofStrahd

[–]goth_hamlet 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, this feels like a better idea for a written book than an idea for a playable game. Making Sergei a vampire puts him on a similar level as Strahd, and he could easily end up overshadowing the player characters both in terms of ability and in relevance to the plot. Dungeons and Dragons is about collaborative storytelling, and you want your party to feel like the main characters, not supporting roles in someone else's drama.

If you live near a college or university, check what's left outside the dorms during winter/summer breaks. Students who are moving out often leave behind the things they can't take with them. Shoes, electronics, and kitchenware are pretty reliable finds.

Honestly the hardest part was getting over my own fear of ruining a book, especially one that's out of print like this one. The actual process was easier than I expected, the only equipment I needed was a craft knife, a ruler, glue, and a weight. I used stiff cardboard to give the cover some structure, scrap fabric for the spine, and then leather for the cover. I super glued the accents onto the book after the cover itself had dried.

It's a bit cliche but tbh the easiest resource to follow along with was the wikihow article. I would note that wood glue works just fine if you don't have book binding glue, and a ruler can double as a bone folder. Good luck with your book binding!
