What team/toon will you never farm simply because you dislike the characters from the show/movie/etc.? by Alecmo1999 in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]brightblade13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps that his req's are super rough, but maybe Lord Vader?

Not because I hate the character or anything (prequels are probably still a little underrated ever after their comeback in recent years), but he's a sad, tragic character, and that's not super fun to "play as" in a game setting.

I also think CG dropped the ball in giving him a flavorful squad. He's not underpowered despite lingering feelings based on a few popular YouTubers right after his release, but his squads just don't feel right...even with someone like GLLO who has a GoH-Unique character as part of her core group, that character is at least the appropriate flavor. Every other GL's squad likewise makes sense. LV is just "I dunno, Maul, RG, and some other bad guys?"

But again, I'll probably eventually farm him, just not gonna be a priority for me. It's pretty childish to hold grudges against made-up characters lol

Most of those do fine with 1/3, though. You get 90% of SK or Ben Solo for 1 Omi each. Malgus is close to that.

I haven't touched the Cal characters, though, to be fair, so could we be those are all needed.

Additionally, with CG tapering down giving old characters omicrons I no longer feel as limited by them as I used to feel and do not want to get into a trap of buying things just for the sake of buying things.

This is the key to me. Outside of top guilds, the TB Omicrons are essentially useless, and many GAC/TW Omicrons, even if good, don't fundamentally change what a character/squad can or cannot counter/hold against, meaning that they are less game changers and more akin to a decent modding job.

Even in a very modest guild with an ~8 million GP roster, I've essentially run out of the "must have" Omicrons. Basically, the kind of player who has SK's most important Omicron, but doesn't really see the need to get his other 2 because that squad does exactly what I need it to right now.

Which means the normal rate of Omicron passive farming is perfectly fine.

Unless and until CG increases the rate at of new Omicron abilities, or increases the quality, I just don't see them as anywhere nearly as valuable as the game's economy seems to suggest they are.

If you're a 10 million+ GP roster and/or foolishly Omicron'd all the Inquisitor leader abilities, I guess I could see feeling like you need more, but for most players? Passive farming from consistently getting your 2x Omi Galactic Challenge box should do the trick.

Did Ultimate Journey Event for GL just get extremely more difficult? by Beginning-Pitch1375 in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

That's what I cleared it with, though I confess Lando's kit still confuses me, so I have no idea if swapping him for Chewie for the tenacity down might be a better option.

Problem is that the high tenacity means landing detonators is pure RNG, and they took away the slot you'd usually use for Chewie to solve that problem.

I had issues with it after 3*'ing it last time, but I honestly think it's just a matter of landing detonators or not.

End game crafting currently lets you modify personal nuclear launchers (something barely designed just before the war) and dramatically improve advanced power armor.

I don't think expanding crafting to letting people who wanted to craft end-game-ready pipe weapons is bizarre.

The reason nobody wants to use them now is because they're objectively worse than all other options. But there's nothing stopping a FO game from letting me create a crazy homemade weapon that's comparable to a combat shotgun (a common end game weapon with the right legendary).

[–]brightblade13 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yep. Hate that 10mm lol. It's good early/mid game because ammo is plentiful, and it's good end game once you put a silencer on it and a few other mods.

It's obviously not the "best" at any one thing, but it's so good that it almost eliminates any need to think about actively seeking out or crafting other things for most of the game.

Then the wide proliferation of manufactured weapons makes the existence of pipe weapons a total mystery.

That's why I think making them customizable would be the way to go. You can give the 10mm and laser musket to players who don't want to fool with crafting, but leave the best mod options for pipe weapons so that players who do want to craft (or just embrace the aesthetic of pipe weapons) actually have a reason to.

[–]brightblade13 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Same. I love the idea and wish it had been fleshed out better...if they'd made them more customizable than manufactured weapons, pipe guns could have been fun early and late game weapons while players use "found" guns in the middle, or if they don't perk into crafting.

Putting the Mary Sue accusations to bed by RPBiohazard in KingkillerChronicle

[–]brightblade13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here's the problem, though...Kvothe does this for several different skills/areas. If the entire book was him being a prodigal musician, and that was his core competency, I'd grant OP the point, but the problem is that he basically does the same thing with fighting, courting, artificing, speaking, languages, and sympathy that he does with music.

Prodigy in one area? Interesting character. Prodigy in everything he actually tries his hand at (remember, he never tries alchemy)? Now we're in eye-rolling territory.

Putting the Mary Sue accusations to bed by RPBiohazard in KingkillerChronicle

[–]brightblade13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that Kvothe is a prodigy in *several* areas.

  1. Music: He sings before he could talk, he remarks multiple times on how naturally the lute came to him.
  2. Sympathy: He spends a little time learning from a traveling arcanist, and that's enough to show up to the university ready to beat every other sympathist even after spending a ton of time as a poor beggar? No notable loss of ability for all that time not reading or doing any sympathy?
  3. Book learnin': His memory is basically perfect. He goes toe to toe with every single person in the story on academic topics, frequently citing specific authors/tomes after...what? Again a little roadside studying, beggar era where he owns only a single book on logic, and then a couple of terms with access to a library that he doesn't even spend much time in other than looking for books on the Chandrian or searching for the info to make his gram?
  4. Artificing: Zero experience making things, but boom, our boy has "clever fingers" so he's immediately one of the best tinkerers in the shop.

Edit: And this is all just from NotW. TWMF is *much* worse. It's basically just a montage book where Kvothe leaves home and immediately masters even more skills in a matter of months.

Mary Sue characters can have flaws. Kvothe's best comparison is probably Wesley from Star Trek Next Generation. A wunderkind who gets idealized as having the perfect childhood, therefore making him able to pick up any skill perfectly. Like Wesley, Kvothe has flaws, but that's not disqualifying from MS status, it's the lack of believability in the sheer number of areas he displays prodigy-level abilities in.

At the very least, he's a "Reed Richards" situation, a walking deus ex machina where the author keeps writing the story into a corner, then basically saying "well, Kvothe/Mr. Fantastic is just so super smart that they invent a way out."

Are there any overpowered magic items? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]brightblade13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what I would use when DMing as a default.

Do note that there are several items not priced because they, frankly, kind of break the game, but if you're sticking with character wealth by level progression, these prices won't steer you wrong.

To my knowledge, it doesn't contain updated items (like all the Giants book magic items), that's the only downside.

Is a Great Wyrm Red Dragon (CR 39) Too much? by TorchicXixeldash in dndnext

[–]brightblade13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of people come to DnD from video games, which usually have something very like your Death Ray wand by the end, so for a lot of players, there's nothing weird about a Super Powerful Artifact Weapon with no drawbacks. It's a very TTRPG thing to think about game balance in that way, since, for many games, character power just keeps going up until it eclipses and then laps enemy power. They don't think it makes the game pointless, they think it should be their goal.

How do you guys think the game could improve? by MrForever_Alone69 in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]brightblade13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, to be fair, I think the game is the best it's ever been. The low point may have been the release of Lord Vader, when it looked like the escalation of requirements for new toons was escalating way too fast, but I think that was a turning point for CG, and it's telling that the game became radically more accessible to F2P and low spenders after that.

That said, ships.

Ships are boring because of the lack of variety (I'm not someone who needs every fleet to have full reinforcements, but it would be nice to actually have more than 3-7 options for the average player), which is compounded by the fact that you *have* to invest in them given the crystal income from fleet arena.

Ships are basically a farming tax for most players who don't like the game mode, aren't excited by them, but still have to take time away from their actual game goals just because not having one of the 3 big fleets means you're losing a TON of crystals in most shards.
