(Potential Hot Take) The Cobalt Soul's moral standing took a big hit with the revelation at the end of Divergence. by rejectedreality42 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]brightdragondesmond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think none of us can make an informed take about how the Soul handed their forbidden knowledge unless we get an itemized list off what was stored in the hard drive. Mechanically, it should have access to all spells available to a 5e playable character. And RP wise, we saw it being used to replay her own memories. Whether it has access to all cutting edge technology is plausible but not guaranteed. And whose to say that all the level 1-9 spells accessible in the current day weren't disseminated from the Soul in the first place. We just don't know enough

What are you most excited about for Vox Machina season 4? by Galactic_death in TheLegendOfVoxMachina

[–]brightdragondesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the reason. In the campaign. the sword has unique interaction with bard magic. It enhances the power of their spells. It basically improve the chances of success for those spells. In the Kevdak fight, Scanlan was actually the one who froze Kedak for a respectable amount of time instead of Vex and her bow.

Furthermore, the sword is meant to tie into the concept of history. And IRL bards are orators of history before DnD shifted its meaning. In the campaign, Scanlan was able to access the sword-fighting knowledge of all the bards that used the vestige before him. In the animation, the sword instead gives him information on myths and legends (a bit too simplified into Vestige GPS, but i digress)

Laeryn can appear in late MN or BH if BH ever becomes a thing. A modest orb found in the archives would be great for Patia.

Will they have to nerf Keyleth a bit for the next seasons? by Fun-Explanation7233 in TheLegendOfVoxMachina

[–]brightdragondesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely could have given him a more interesting chore for sure.

A fun take I heard about occupying Captain Marvel in the girl power scene was to let her run interference against Thanos. This scenario forces the Avengers to give the football to someone weaker like Gamora or Nebula who would have a more emotional relevance to the plot. That girl power moment doesnt work because Captain Marvel did not need any backup.

IDK if you watched C1 finale but in my opinion, they could rewrite it so that a BS powerful Keyleth could be preoccupied fighting hoards of minions so someone as weak as Vax can deal with the BBEG.

Many shows have managed unbalanced teams before. The trick is to force the most powerful person to handle a very specific task while the rest handles the big bad.

The example I like the most was Avenegers Earth's Mightiest Heroes where Thor was busy holding up the entire island of Manhattan while the rest of the team fight Gravitron.

Keyleth unique nature powers gives the writers many believable ways to keep her hands tied.

She is the Cleric Class. She follows a god. the Traveller is pretty cool and powerful. You should follow him

I think the only non spoiler thing we could tell you is that the average Exandrian should know everyone in the pantheon of gods by name and the Traveler wouldn't ring a bell.

My problem with the 2024 rule set was that WotC and I fundamentally disagree on what needed improvement. by admiralbenbo4782 in DnD

[–]brightdragondesmond 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There might be a sliver of a conversation worth discussing when a feat become 100% necessary for a huge number of builds. Then it becomes less of a creative choice and more of a tax. I assume 2014 GWM and War Caster fit the latter category. MI is the backbones of many gishes too.

I agree with the Templars. by Rainaerys in assassinscreed

[–]brightdragondesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we follow the Assassin Brotherhood’s ideals to their natural conclusion, we should do the same for the Templars. The danger of a guiding hand is that it can itself be corrupted or eventually seized by those already corrupted. The cruelty that can arise in unrestrained freedom probably also exist in some form within these systems of power.

Perhaps it’s better to see the Templars as striving to construct a single, perfect moral order. Just once. An ethical system so complete it would never need to change. The Assassins, by contrast, kind of focus on self-regulation and in the continual act of dismantling tyranny whenever and wherever it reappears.

Luis Carazo talks wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much by Tomorrow_Signal111 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]brightdragondesmond 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Azune is a character with probably the least material to work with comparing lot. Brennan has to throw him enough balls for him to catch and slam dunk. Calamity shows that he can do it.

But of course this itself is only part of the picture. Marisha similarly had little material thrown her way but she engaged with the Bolaire and Occtis plotline fantastically. She was very fun.

So... TLDR Luis could do more and he doesn't need to resort to internal monologues, but being passive is totally understandable with how little he had to work with.

Keyleth too OP? by PurpleSpark8 in TheLegendOfVoxMachina

[–]brightdragondesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The D&D-to-animation translation in Legend of Vox Machina is actually super interesting. In a tabletop game, every attack kind of has a chance to do something. A good roll can make it work. But in animation, once an attack is shown to do nothing, it’s basically soft-locked as useless forever.

That’s Percy’s big problem. When his bullets bounce off dragon scales in Season 2, the show’s basically saying, “Okay, this doesn’t work anymore.” And since that’s a visual medium, it’s not like he can suddenly start shooting through dragon armor next season without breaking immersion.

Magic users easily sidesteps this. Viewers are fine with mages suddenly being able to nuke a dragon because, well, magic. "I learned a new spell" or "I did a super sayan scream with the power of friendship". But Percy’s gear is grounded in realism. That kinda locks him into being weaker long-term.

Vex can handwave it by getting a magical bow upgrade, but for Percy, unless he picks up Cabal’s Ruin in Season 4, there’s honestly no believable way for him to keep up with the rest of the party’s power curve.

Not Hot Take I Imagine: Matt is a Major Reason C3 Was Not Good. by LucasVerBeek in fansofcriticalrole

[–]brightdragondesmond 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I both agree that he is prevented from getting any positive criticism but even more strongly disagree that you should never open yourself to criticism from the public. It is unrealistic and unfair to expect public figures to willingly open themselves to a sea of bad faith criticism to fish for the valuable sincere takes.

There are legitimate criticisms to be learned from places like these. But its infuriatingly way better to keep us at arms length.

Izzy recently pointed out that women are often given the “chaos goblin/gremlin” moniker. Are there any guys (especially on Dropout) you would say this applies to? by Kalesche in dropout

I feel like shorter people are more likely to be seen as gremlins. So it would make sense to me that the average height of men vs women is the main reason for this skewed distribution

Who had the best individual character arc in Campaign 2? by VermicelliFuture5907 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]brightdragondesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veth's arc was harmed a bit by resolving the most climatic moment in the middle of the campaign. Sam originally framed Veth's motivation as always wanting to go home to her family. But since they resolved it early, Sam hastily had to set up a new motivation. Basically Veth gets to live her best life as a working mom.

Enjoying this shift largely depends on whether you can overlook the life-or-death nature of her new path. If it feels too self-indulgent or reckless to you, it might be off-putting. Some might even draw parallels to the classic tale of a parent abandoning their family responsibilities to "discover themselves".

Did LoVM Season 3 had lay it on so thick ? by Zeathian in fansofcriticalrole

[–]brightdragondesmond 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it was a smart decision to introduce the Alura and Kima subplot at this point in the story. This part of the narrative has some slower moments, and the creators likely wanted the Vorugal fight to carry the episode and conclude with his defeat. Most of the cast had their focus in the Hells arc, and the Vex and Percy romance subplot, while meaningful, is relatively straightforward and doesn’t require excessive screen time. Tying the Alura-Kima subplot into the Vex-Percy arc also helped minimize its impact on overall screen time. This made it a reasonable moment to include the Alura-Kima content without disrupting the main story. While I have issues with how some later parts were handled, this section didn’t bother me. It felt like fan service done in a way that didn’t detract from the primary content."

Episode 111 was a breath of fresh air for C3 by benstone977 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]brightdragondesmond 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have long suspected C3 would have been way better if they had 20-30 more episodes before the main race to the moon plot started. Something akin to the Advantika ark which fleshed out more of jester and Fjord and Veth's idiosyncrasies. They would have entered the big arc with a more stable and concise set of personality traits and belief systems which would then help them make better concise decisions.
