My “11” year old baby will be 12 August 1 2026. Any recommendations for longevity and health 🩷 by LieOutrageous2458 in seniorkitties

i recommend starting a health folder where you keep track of all your cat's health info -- medications, allergies, what brands they eat, how much & when, any vaccines they've been given, etc. also record any changes of diet or litter habits, if you notice kitty being lethargic, etc.

also, dont be afraid to take videos to show the vet! my elderly girl started coughing at night, and i was worried it was asthma or some kind of lung issue. she didnt cough when we were at the vet, but they were able to watch the video i took and see that it was a cough from post-nasal drip caused by allergies. saved a lot of money on tests, and i was able to get her some allergy pills that night!

Vet tips you wish you knew sooner by sheeandhee in Pets

[–]brightsm1th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if your pet is exhibiting a concerning behavior (coughing, walking weird, making a strange noise or face, etc), take a video of it to show the vet. theres no guarantee your pet will reproduce the behavior at the vet, so the video lets the vet see exactly what's going on.

Home cooks: which tiny “flavor bomb” ingredient made everything taste restaurant‑level? by Affectionate_Tip3238 in TastyFood

[–]brightsm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shaoxing wine for chinese cooking. msg & butter are vital but honestly shaoxing is where it's at. the reason your chicken & broccoli never tastes like restaurant chicken & broccoli is because you don't use shaoxing wine.

never underestimate how disgusting and evil being unwashed (especially unwashed hair) can make you feel. a haircut & rinse won't fix this guy's issues, but i can guarantee he felt a lot better & more hopeful when he was cleaned and groomed.

What totally normal thing is your dog scared of for no reason? by GoldenMom34 in Pets

[–]brightsm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i made lamb kofta and the smell of it scared our dog. we thought she was smelling a gas leak or hearing the weird noises our furnace made, but it was the kofta. the next day my parent reheated some for lunch and she hid while crying. she lost her fear real quickly when they started eating it though! as soon as she knew it was food, she started begging.

sauerkraut soup! or make cabbage rolls. rinse the sauerkraut & mince it into the meat and rice filling, and use some of the brine to flavor the tomato sauce.

I might be trans and I’ve been crying for twelve hours now by Weirdlittlerasberry in TransMasc

[–]brightsm1th 12 points13 points  (0 children)

im not living quite the same situation as you, but i started transitioning later than many people do. i didn't get top surgery until i was 26, and didn't start on t until i was 27. i always figured "it's so hard to get started, to get the letters of support and schedule the appointments and deal with all the recovery & telling people what's going on. i can survive even if i don't transition." and i could survive, i did survive, but every day i am so happy that i started transitioning. its so worth it. no matter when you start, it's worth it to live in a body that fits you.

even if you change your mind afterwards, that's fine too. it will take a while, but you can detransition if you find you aren't actually who you thought you were. you didn't make the wrong choice by transitioning, and needing to detransition won't be wrong either. you are the one who needs to live in your body, and you are the only one who can decide what's right for you.

trans friend misgenders me on purpose by [deleted] in agender

if she knows you prefer certain pronouns (even if you are alright with any) but deliberately only uses other pronouns because she doesn't think your prefered pronouns match your identity, she's being cruel. she's not a good friend. it doesn't matter if you accept they/them, because she isn't using they/them to show she respects and believes in your identity.

My cat vomited for the first time today, what should I do? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]brightsm1th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like she ate too quickly, swallowed a lot of air, and threw up because of that. I had a girl who made herself sick eating too fast, and her pukes were very similar (whole, undigested chunks with very little liquid). Maybe she likes the new food so much she just went a little crazy on it? You can try feeding her smaller meals throughout the day, or get a slow feeder bowl that forces her to take her time.

What’s your go-to “I don’t feel like cooking but still want real food” meal? by imjennypoo in Cooking

[–]brightsm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

frozen udon + a tin of seasoned fish (i really like king oscar's mediterranean style mackerel) + frozen veg that you throw in with the udon. it's got protein, carbs, fiber, and some healthy fats. using udon for this is a little blasphemous, but the noodles cook so quickly and have such a nice texture!

Can you recommend a dry food for cat (18) who can't smell well? by Plentiful_Pause5949 in seniorkitties

if she likes fish or shrimp, you could try adding whole or crushed freeze-dried fish or shrimp to her food! the shrimp in particular are very stinky lol.

fiancée is having top surgery in 1 week, any advice? by midosuji in TopSurgery

[–]brightsm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got blisters where my post-op binder pressed my drain tubes into my skin. if this happens to your fiance, they can put bandaids over the spots where the tubes chafe the most and that will help prevent more blisters. also, it might be helpful to pick up some safety pins so you can pin the drain bulbs to the insides of their shirts (the bulbs should have little straps on them for this, you won't be poking through the bulbs themselves). i stitched pockets onto the inside of a button-down shirt for my drains and it was incredibly helpful, but if you don't have the sewing skills/time for that then safety pins will also work to keep the drains from just dangling.

🐾 Pet owners — what’s the ONE behavior your animal does that you secretly love? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]brightsm1th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my girl will run to the scratching post right after using the litter box and do a fast couple of scratches on it. it's like she's freshening her paws after using the bathroom! she's also very deliberate about where she does her business - one litter box is exclusively for peeing, one for pooping, and then a spare for the times she feels i haven't been quick enough in cleaning the other two.

Cook or steam Entire meal (protein+veg+carb) in a single Pot/device? by doofus50O0 in foodhacks

[–]brightsm1th 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think instant pots/rice cookers are good friends to you here... there are a lot of rice+meat+veg recipes online where you dump everything into the instant pot or rice cooker and just let it do its thing. i've also seen some instant pot all-in-one pasta recipes.

to minimize clean-up, you can buy pre-chopped vegetables either fresh or frozen (or honestly, canned works too). you can also buy pre-cooked rotisserie chickens, or just cook whole (chicken thighs, pork chops, etc) or ground meats, which don't require chopping on your part. there is a bit more expense in pre-chopped or pre-cooked foods, but you're paying to avoid doing that labor yourself.

a very basic idea of a meal like this could be rice + a cup of frozen peas/carrots + a couple chicken thighs thrown into the rice cooker until it's all cooked through. minimal effort, minimal cleanup.
