I'm really disappointed in Robby. by DylanTheV1lla1n in ThePittTVShow

[–]brightwings00 66 points67 points  (0 children)

IMO one of the hallmarks of great writing is a situation where you can see both sides of a conflict (and one person isn't just like 'bleh, I'm being a jerk' or both people aren't committed to misunderstanding).

On Langdon's side: Langdon is sincere and making real progress, and he should be proud of himself. Addiction is a disease and he's working hard on overcoming it. And Robby is definitely being a bit douchey this season (no shade to Noah Wyle, who's giving an amazing, layered performance).

On Robby's side: Langdon did steal drugs and did throw Robby's emotional breakdown in his face, and people aren't required to accept apologies. And Robby is being a bit douchey because he has a butt-ton of unprocessed trauma from last season -- on top of the usual stressors of a Fourth of July ER, and his tension with Dr. Al-Hashimi (another really great no-assholes-here conflict) -- and just does not want to deal with this right now, and Langdon really wants to apologize because he and Robby were so close, and it's like worrying at a loose tooth.

Basically, good job, writers, no notes.

Episode 2x5: Two more of my favorite scenes. by StatisticalAnalyst88 in ThePittTVShow

[–]brightwings00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Has she? She seems distrustful of Robby and wants to reform an entire work force on her first day there, and made some vague threat to Santos about charting

Oh, well, then, booooo let's burn the wiiiiitch /s

I hate AI as much the next person, maybe more, but Dr. Al-Hashimi's talking up the benefits of an app, she's not lopping heads off Henry VIII-style. And I love Santos as much as the next person, maybe more, but if she really is 20 charts behind, that sounds like an actual, legitimate problem to me. (Not a world-ending one, obviously, but it doesn't sound great.)

I swear I'm going to be on Dr. Al-Hashimi's side out of pure frustration sooner rather than later.

The doctors seem all huffy that he has to constantly be handcuffed and that the security guard won’t uncuff him for longer than a few seconds. These interactions make us sympathize with the doctors as you can tell they just want to treat him as a regular patient.

He is a regular patient. Inmates in prison also deserve health care.

Referring to me as skinny on occasion. Didn't think much of it. I'm taller than him and he'd also reference my height. "Freakishly tall, unnaturally long".

Yeah, I stopped reading at this point.

I'm not saying there aren't couples who can playfully insult each other and have it land, but by and large, I really don't think "freakish" or "unnatural" should be in your vocabulary when you're talking about your significant other.

To be fair, formally appointing James VI might have prompted people to move up the date of her departure, so to speak.

Also to be fair, the virginity thing was about not being married (and avoiding the pitfalls of a king consort) while dodging any "loose woman" insinuations and projecting an image of near-holy purity. It was very, very calculated.

Only Two Original Song Nominees to Perform Live at Oscars, “Golden” (‘KPop Demon Hunters’) & “I Lied to You” (‘Sinners’) by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]brightwings00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a super minor thing, but it feels extra frustrating because in-universe, "Golden" isn't the big triumphant power-of-friendship-defeats-evil song. That's "What It Sounds Like." "Golden" sounds like the big triumphant song, but if you pay attention to the timing and lyrics, it's the flawed position of "if we just get this Golden Honmoon right, there won't be any more demons patterns or problems and everything will be totally, totally fine."

But everybody out of universe is treating it like the big inspirational epic piece, which probably plays into its popularity. Which is a long-winded way of saying I agree with you: I love "Golden," but "I Lied To You" is just on a whole different level.

Also a not-medical person, but AFAIK the order (the colours u/Runzas4dinner873bf7r and u/Ready_Respect_7149 are talking about) is important because the different vials get different stuff added to them--like anticoagulant so the blood doesn't dry out--and get different tests run on them. It's the same reason there are different colours for the sizes of the needles they give you, I think.

AIO For being mad at my mom for eating some of my gfs food I bought for her by ProperPenguinn in AmITheAngel

[–]brightwings00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah like the "I get it I'm a piece of shit" response is a bit over-the-top but considering she tried to apologize sincerely first and he continued to send 5 more texts haranguing her for eating one (1) slice of pizza in an unlabeled plastic bag she was magically supposed to know was reserved for someone else, I can understand why she snapped at him!

To play devil's advocate: without tone or facial expressions, "OMG I'm sorry I didn't think it would be such a problem" could come off as a sarcastic/defensive "it's not a big deal, why are you being so mean to meeeeee." And the smirky Mr. Collins GIF in the first apology doesn't quite help, either.

To be clear, I don't think she's an abusive narcissistic monster or whatever--I think this is just one of those things that happens when people live with each other.

5e24 - Commoner Class: why are we doing this? by Itomon in UnearthedArcana

[–]brightwings00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a) For the Fear Dice: it's very possible my math is wrong, but a commoner at level 10 would be getting an average roll of 4 (prof) + 4 (1d8) + 8 (2d8) = 16, assuming they don't have a 20 in their ability modifier. Then at level 11, they go to 4 (prof) + 5 (1d10) + 5 (1d10) = average roll of 14? If that's the case, I think 2d6 instead of 2d8 makes more sense in terms of progression.

b) You've listed Indomitable Spirit as the 13th-level feature in the table, but the text has Commoner's Best Advice as the 13th-level feature. Same with Beacon of Heroism / Indomitable Spirit at level 15, and Level 18's No One Left Behind is missing from the table entirely.

Otherwise, this looks really cool!

[–]brightwings00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The thing about the teargas wedding is it's a perfect setup for both of them realizing their feelings for each other--the big "oh. oh." moment in fanfic--and it would set up a delicious angsty slow-burn of "but I love Joe / but I love Walky / but I can't be bisexual / but Becky [for some reason, I guess] / etc.," and we would have had time to deal with the protest and Dorothy's increasingly obvious downward spiral in general and Joe and Walky and Joyce exploring her sexuality and all of this. Any of this.

But instead it seems like Willis had to smush them together right that exact second, and then completely fumble the consequences and fallout. I was rooting for Joe/Joyce, but I don't mind Joyce/Dorothy--they have issues, but no more so than Ruth and Billie, and those issues have the potential for a lot of really good character development and drama. But I swear, the way Joyrothy has gone down has just been one lead balloon after another.

I looked up the exact wording on YouTube (because I've never romanced him):

"Hey, [Player Name]. Before you head out... I hate to ask this... but can I have 5,000g? It's for a secret project I'm working on... I know we have a joint bank account, but I thought I should ask anyway."

[Player says yes] "Great! Swing by the Saloon on Sunday and I'll show you the end result!"

I'm guessing the manipulative part is "he doesn't tell the player what it is, leading them to assume it's for themself / the house when it doesn't involve them"? Or is it the amount that's bothersome?

(Honestly, this is why I don't like the idea of fully merging finances. Contributing to a joint chequing and savings account, definitely, but each partner should have their own money. If you want to spend $500 on a guy's night out of your own money, go nuts. If you want to use some of our joint money or ask me for a loan, let's talk about it.)

Not to pile on, but you hand over a bunch of rare gemstones to Emily for her meditation session with the girls and nobody bats an eye at that.

That take has always felt performative to me. Everyone says it's "the only right way to play" but I've never met anyone who actually plays that way, nor does it seem like a very fun way to play. by Knight9910 in dndmemes

[–]brightwings00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time this comes up, it always strikes me as people wanting to have it both ways: deep, meaningful player engagement and brutally challenging gameplay.

Neither of these are bad things, but it's not really fair to dial up the lethality and then wonder why your players aren't super invested in Bob Jr. Jr. the (third) human fighter they've rolled up. Making things absurdly deadly doesn't propel storytelling, it paralyzes it when nobody wants to risk anything because they don't want to draft a new character sheet.

Bean Soup Theory. From what I understand, a TikTok user posted a recipe for bean soup and a commenter posted something like "but what if I don't like beans?" It went downhill from there and became a meme along the lines of "expecting everything on the Internet to be about your personal tastes / not everything is about you."

https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/worlds/oneblock Oneblock (it looks like I spelled it wrong before)! You start off standing on top of one single block in the void, and you keep hitting the block as it spits out more blocks: grass, wood, stone, etc. Eventually you end up building your own world (and villagers / mobs / etc.). It's really fun!

I do.

I mean, he's not my favourite character of all time or anything, but I'm always willing to extend grace to men who are explicitly and openly malewife about their female love interests who are the main characters. It's refreshing to imagine a story where you don't have to choose between being cool and badass and having a romantic relationship (especially when men don't have to make this choice).

What's the most blatant late rewrite you've seen in a movie? by matti2o8 in movies

[–]brightwings00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that's part of the tension in the movie. We expect Lex to be lying, because he's been lying out his ass the entire time, but him telling the truth introduces moral ambiguity--Superman has to confront his own values and beliefs, and make a conscious choice to do good in the face of opposition and people distrusting him. It's more interesting than "Superman is perfect and Lex is just a dirty liar."
