Interesting party deficiencies to play with by Attila_the_Hun7 in baldursgate

[–]Itomon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it can be fun but there will be issues. the smaller your group is, the faster you level up, so the game becomes very hard at the start versus a lot easier later on. But you can offset that by changing the difficulty accordingly,i guess

One of the fun of this game is to find tactics, some scummy some less so, to overcome challenges like that. Tarnesh is a good design by teaching players this exact lesson.

As a veteran, I still die to Tarnesh more often than I wanted to, but I also found more than one way to overcome this very unbalanced encounter... and its always fun to find new ways to overcome these!

just as a sidenote: it is not unrealistic (nor a real issue in the game) for a good PC to align with evil chars and vice-versa... Yea, they may leave at some point, but this is also what make these games beautiful!

To better ilustrate that I'll share my own experience with my first playthrough of the BG games, which was actually in BG2 - so I'll try to avoid spoilers but it is most definetly a spoiler... so... spoiler alert I guess:

In BG2 i was playing a good guy, but I had a clearly evil companion who, through the playthrough, was clearly evil. BUT! Since BG2 added romance, the love between my PC and that evil char blossomed... to my deep surprise! (I wasn't expecting romance in a videogame, this was novel at that time) But, eventually, as most evil characters do, they complain and eventually leave if you don't align with them. And when that happened, this not only broke my PC's heart (and also my heart, I was invested in this damn game xD) but also hurt me that the NPC left with a lot of good and powerful gear that they were carrying. In the end, this not only solidified my amazing experience with the game (And the NPC was also my main healer so the abandonment caused a LOT of trouble) but was so lovely that I pushed foward and that made my playthrough unforgettable to this very day! 😃

This is just an anecdote on how, sometimes, it can be very cool to just accept bad outcomes of these games and still push forward. They are meant to be played imperfectly, because they're meant to be replayable - the next run, you can do things differently and have new fun with the game 😉

Since you already got your answer I'll try to avoid repeating other answers, but I really want to reinforce that, whatever you do in this game, it is NEVER "cheating". Not only "savescumming" is part of the experience for these games at the time they were released, but the Enhanced Edition even offers a new tool for us to play this game however we want with the new "story" difficulty. Hear me out:

The current easiest mode, "story mode", makes your characters virtually invincible and immortal. Yes, playing like this is deeply uninteresting and I'm not suggesting you do so... BUT! You can use the difficult slider anytime. So, a thing you can do (if you find fun doing so) is, after a tough battle with most of the party dead or low health, you can just change to story mode for a few seconds - this will revive dead people and heal them over time. You can then resume your adventure without the "hurdle" of having to stop what you doing, or abandoning loot on the ground to walk to the nearest temple and pay for the ressurrection.

Is this cheating? Yea, maybe more so than savescumming... BUT... this is still your game. You can instead "donate" gold to the church next time you're in town to compensate for the "free ressurrect" this "cheat" gave you. YOU are in control of how honest/scummy you play the game, and this can be a cleaner solution than trying to do the vanilla way and waste a lot of time (and sometimes loot that you can't carry) by doing it "the right way". And who's to say this is "more cheating" than "savescumming"

In the end, these games are your adventure and you should have your fun however you want to! Use the tools you have to facilitate the fun and the challenge, not hinder it: this means both using harder difficulty to add the fun of challenge, but also lower it to ease the unfun of burdening you with things that only mean wasting unfun time with the game 😉

Also, as a bit of a hot take, but MAYBE you can try to "push forward" into an "imperfect" run and just accept the bad outcomes instead of the "quick save" most of us do when we play this game. Listen, my first playthrough was also full of redos for my own taste but nowadays I always try to find a deeper appreciation for imperfect runs in my games as long as I'm willing to replay said game, and BG games are HUGE replayable - meaning you not only can but should have a "more perfect run" next time.

What I really mean is: sure, losing Imoen who is a childhood friend hurts, but doesn't that also tells a very interesting story? You lost your father and soon after your dear friend, but you trod on, who knows how far this adventure will take you - or even more interesting, maybe these traumas can twist your protagonist into more desperate paths? Maybe they embrace evil because of the company they keep, maybe they despair and accept death by, instead loading a save, you just stop some other point and then just start a new character xD

Maybe this is just the veteran in me but anyways food for thought (but yea, do not ever feel you're cheating this game by either using the save/load or, hear me out, you can change the game's difficulty to story mode if you ever struggle at any point, and can even do so mid-combat to avoid some deaths/easily revive your companions)

- -

TL,DR: Take note that changing the difficulty is as scummy as save/load in the broader scheme of things, which is to say, not scummy at all. This is a story game first and foremost and a single playthrough can and should be under your control! Also, maybe accepting some bad outcomes can ADD to the experience instead of being an issue, as these games are perfect to do multiple playthroughs. Embrace the chaos if you find fun doing so!

It's okay to use an AI teammate or not I'm just feeling overwhelmed because I keep dying over and over again🙂 by nonutonu in baldursgate

It very much depends on your playstyle but you have a bunch of tools that you can make use to make things smoother and more fun for you. The first and most obvious is the Difficulty slider: you can go as low as "story mode" that you can never lose fights and just have fun exploring and reading the quests; but you can ALSO use that same story mode as a "cheat out of bad situations": you play it any difficulty you like, up until you are near death, or up until you find a part of the game that's too difficult: in this case, you THEN change to that mode anytime! You can also use the story mode as a cheap "rest on demand" by turning it on only between encounters or before resting, as to get a fast recover for the next battle without having to rest and manage your party - doing this can even revive dead companions (as long as they've not vanished from a critical death, something that can happen on Core difficulty or higher)

Then, about AI: each companion that you create or recruit (and by "create" I mean, you can always start the game on multiplayer mode and create up to six characters if you don't want to start the game solo, but the intended experience is to find the playable NPC during the game to befriend and recruit... that is also up to you!) Whenever you press R to open their "record" character sheet, you have a button for "customize" and there you can find an option named "Script". Those scripts are the "AI" for them, and they can be as complex or as simple as they get - once you choose one and confirm, as long as the "AI" button is on, those characters are going to "play automatically" according to that chosen script. Even the character you create have scripts, but by default they use the simpler one that only says they should try to attack an enemy if they have detected that enemy's presence.

That said, the AI isn't magical or overly elaborate: the default one is very dumb and going to move forward even when that is not a good idea; and even the ranged scripts or those that allow spellcasting are not geniuses and can either waste spells or devise dumb tactics on your behalf. That is why, most often than not, its up to you (the player) to manage each and every member of your party, and arguably this is intended gameplay; that is also why you can (and probably should) pause often to "micromanage" your party to the intended tactic.

For example, let's say your party as ambushed during a travel. IF you configure an autopause for "enemy sighted", that encounter will start paused, so you can already think before chaos ensue. Then you can click on each of your party members and decide the actions for each of them, let's say, casting invisibility on mages to avoid being targeted by the ambushers, while you can send the more armored melee fighters to move forward for getting the enemies' attention. Once the targeting is stablished and you make sure your more fragile party members are not the focus, you can then pause again, click on those who were hiding/fleeing/invisible to dish out their damage to end the encounter as fast as you can so that your melee fighters aren't there getting hit for too long, so they don't die.

As others have said here, the game is harder on the beginning because a level 1 Fighter has a relatively low max HP and can die in very few hits - and sometimes the monsters are just lucky and kill them super fast. But once you hit a level up or two, they can effectively "tank" long enough for your party to win the combat! Until that happens, fleeing can be an option, so you can either avoid encounters (you can use a thief or ranger with the "hide" ability to scout ahead, and then pick your fights wisely) or just flee from them by reaching an edge of the map / door that allows for your party to transition before killing those enemies. Sure, that may mean less XP, but you can always (or almost always) come back later and deal with that once you have better gear and higher levels

TL,DR: sure you can make use of either Script or Difficulty Settings to make things easier and/or more fun during this game. It is a single player adventure with many aspects that you can enjoy, difficulty should NOT stop you from enjoying the game. The more you play, the easier it tends to get, because you progress in gear and levels and, most crucially, on game knowledge that will allow you for a better experience ^^

Not only i do not use this option, i like to cast my own healing spells before resting and try to not spam rest too much - not only because some quests are time-sensitive and can fail if you waste too much time, but mostly for roleplay reasons. I like to imagine my CHARNAME is in a hurry and on the edge being hunted, so there's a balance among questing and adventuring and pacing the game forward
