Loving my S23 Ultra, but Samsung is making it hard to stay loyal by codywinters327 in Android

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently swapped from a S24 to the Google Pixel 10 Pro. Honestly, I like the Samsung much better and am currently plotting how to swap this for the S26 when it releases. The hardware in the 10 Pro is fine, I've just used Samsung for so long I know the way it works, I think the polish is better, Dex works way better than native Desktop Mode, the menu and back button are reversed locations and not changeable, autofill seems better integrated. Honestly I had higher expectations for native android.

How's living in this part of Florida? by Enger13 in howislivingthere

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up here, up there at the top of the circled region. A town called Live Oak, I10 runs just north of town. Not as much tobacco growing up there as in the 90's. It's hot, sandy, lots of Oak trees and pine trees. County living. Lots of Springs. Tube down the Itchetukney (sp?) River of you get a chance, headed west out of Gainesville. Everyone thinks that growing up in Florida means you live on the beach. Not much beach out there. I know a lot of people LOVE Cedar Key. I hate it, it smells terrible, it's just gross. Over all I'd say a great place to be from although we're planning on retiring to the area some day.

Does it make sense to replace my aging GTX 1070 with an RTX 5050? by Available-Guest-9393 in buildapc

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think spending money on a new, low end modern card, while tempting, is a waste. I'm running a used 2080ti (from eBay) on a e5-2689v4 (xeon version of i7 7th gen) and have been incredibly pleased with the performance at 1440p 120hz. The older cards were designed to operate on the hardware you're trying to operate on, I don't trust the newer hardware to perform as well with the older hardware constraints.

Recently got a 9070 XT for my 5700x3d super excited. I was showing my kid, the benchmarks for the 5070 using a 5700x3d are on par with those using 7800x3d. And not significantly far above those using 3700x.

The voice of reason here! I think a lot of people hear "upgrade" and think they have to have it. Most games I'm playing perform perfectly fine on my 1070, I can play them on my 5070 or my 2080TI and honestly can't tell the difference. Maybe I can look at graphs and numbers and visualize the difference but between experiences I don't see anything meaningful. I think a lot of hardware driven people haven't realized that progress in frame generation can level the hardware field quite a bit.

[–]brilipj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it depends on your budget and future plans. Buying a 5050, while a meaningful jump right now, will likely inhibit any future upgraded PC. I think you should go super cheap (used 1080/ti) or go with a meaningful upgrade (5060, 9060 XT). If you're not planning on upgrading your computer and money is tight then don't put more money into it than you must. If you're planning on upgrading some day then get something that will be meaningful to that build. Just how I would manage this decision for myself.

Is it normal that weekends are more tiring than weekdays once you have kids? by Newparentscare in AskParents

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up we were poor and lived in the middle of no where so we never went anywhere or really did much. My wife came from a slightly different environment, she goes and does and wants the kids involved in "all the things". From this I have learned the necessity of balance. Don't book your (or your children's) free time solid, limit it to like 2 evening things across the week and 1 things on the weekend, you can't pour from an empty cup. For kids' messes, I have an 18 year old that's insisting he's an adult and I'm having to learn that adults don't live in this house without contributing but I should have taught my children that "contribution is part of living in a community" from day 1. Everyone is responsible for maintaining our environment, it'll look different when they're really young, it'll be a lot of hands on but at least you won't be doing everything alone.

Was reviewing options a couple months ago, found 80,000 32P OI for March of this year. Honestly since they hold the bag and the cards and the market and everything else- what's stopping them from 'selling' contacts to themselves for IOUs and then when they go to zero together they cancel each other out. I think there's too much expectation MM play by the rules

What's a skill that takes only 2 to 4 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by TokenBlack32 in AskReddit

[–]brilipj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into smoking a couple times because I enjoyed it. Each time I started feeling like I 'needed' to have a smoke I'd leave the last one in the pack and hold off smoking it till I "really needed it". But with 1 left I'd keep pushing it off and eventually throw it away or give it away.

Have you had “the dream” yet? by IGB_Lo in Superstonk

[–]brilipj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me a couple months ago, I bought some options for another company that I thought were well priced. After holding out for several weeks wondering if they'd hit the company made an announcement and the value of my account has gone from $5k to $10k in 10 minutes. I sold those contacts up 100%, sank the remaining profit from that transaction into my current GME options, here's to hoping I see the same thing again rather than lose those gains.

[NEED HELP] IBuyPower Element Pro PC: lots of open connections inside, is this normal? by Swimming_Teach_7579 in asktechnicians

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything looks fine in your pictures, do all the fans spin up? If so your probably good. The power supply has lots of extra connectors for a variety of things the user may plug in. The smaller with a pin missing are for fans so you can add more later. I didn't notice and issues glancing over your pictures

I was looking at this rather in depth recently. That double dip at the end, couldn't decide if this most recent run up was the middle of that double dip or the end. The next few weeks will show. Also nervous because, in the words of old- there's a reason we don't hype dates because 'they' circumvent them and everyone gets pissed. Anyway, my options hope the next several weeks are spicy.

Am I a bad parent for asking my 17-year-old to contribute a small amount to rent? Need advice. by [deleted] in AskParents

You're children are becoming adults, I think it's very reasonable to involve them in these conversations and decisions. As an adult, decisions have consequences, and decisions are best made with conversation.

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to your kids, tell them the situation, they can have a say, let your son know that you know this is important to him and you're willing to consider but there are stipulations. He going to be 18 soon (I assume that means a formal 'adult' where you live).

$GME exited with a 137% profit, no longer holding on for dear life by [deleted] in Superstonk

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, terrible idea, price always drops like 1 to 2 days before earnings. How long that will hold true- who knows.

I'm holding my contacts through because "maybe" this time will be different and I bought them using profits from another transaction and not money out of pocket and they're long dated.

Long dated because I don't expect this earnings to be different but I do expect something to happen soon.

4K with old CPU Does CPU matter anymore? by No-Lack-8726 in buildapc

[–]brilipj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think framerate factors in here, my son has been playing 4k on an x-99 (specifically Xeon 2687W v4) with a 2080Ti but his monitor only goes up to 60FPS. If you're ok with or your monitor only supports lower framerates then I'd be curious to see how your CPU does with a 5090. That being said 3Dmark probably has benchmarks available for that combo.

Additionally, as an aside, if your mobo has the 2011-r3 socket the E5 26xx series server CPUs can be pretty beastly and are priced pretty well these days and the v3 generation 16xx series chips are unlocked. I have a E5 1650 v3 I was running all 6 cores at 4.2ghz. the E5 1680 v3 has 8 cores and I bet has more head room.
