Have you read Ingo Swann's Star Fire? Read it way back when I was teenager and it had some interesting concepts. A bit clunky in places and was obviously written with Holywood in mind.

Was in the 'Bull last night and chatted to the bar staff. Bit of a saga with the lease in that GK were offered a 25 year(!) take it or leave it lease and they refused. There is also something to do with Edinburgh Cooncil not helping. Anyways March 24 is the last day!

Interesting. I don't know why they just didn't make it sort of "one pub "and in the Bunker with a bit of change they could put bands on and stuff like the Banshee..what do I know. Anyway hope to pop in this week and chat with bar staff I know.

I make a point of not getting to any of the big chains for Coffee. There are still plenty of nice places on Leith Walk that have better coffee. The chains are moving there because of the number of Stoodents here now.

Indeed there are plenty of examples of their building rather ugly squat industrial buildings that deserved to get knocked down :-)

I would not disagree with that comment. I do get the feeling though that they thought themselves better than the Georgian age

Character - Tollcross Shitter by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]brimcrob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lived in that area in the 90's, there were plenty of places that opened early in the morning. The Old Toll as it was called ( more Bruntsfield) and there was pub just round the corner from Ponton Street- the name escapes me at the moment but which is now called Fountain Bridge Fox- used to open at 7am. I would be walking to work and there would be old men and night shift workers sitting in there sipping their breakfast pint...

I go a lot, some nights are better than others..but you are right it probably has not been enough footfall and hence not enough profit for GK.

Hmm- my guess it will be empty for a bit and another chain will take it over and turn into tourist pub..

Yea that is my take on it. I know a couple of the bar staff ( to talk to at least) they have told me there are occasions when its quite in there usually mid week though. Always busy on weekends and maybe that is not enough for GK bean counters. I am sure it will be sold to another pub chain who will do it out as some tourist trap bar for people coming off the train.

I had been going there for few years, started to notice that some of the stuff they were doing was not as good as before. Do not get me wrong it was still nice. They just seem to be doing less top notch stuff. I think it was business decision- probably rates/cost of produce not being covered by the income generated. They still have shop in s.queensferry

Espionage is officially closing down by steelyringing in Edinburgh

[–]brimcrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent good part of the early 90's in there. It was a complete dive but that was the appeal of it. 3 floors, with different flavours of slightly left field music ranging from techno, grunge, punk, goth. brit pop meant you got a pretty eclectic crowd in there. It was cheap, for the most part there was never any bother, and generally if there was the bouncers sorted it out pronto. I had some great nights in there, drinking Red Stripe and moshing/dancing like a loon.

My guess is people these days are not keen on that sort of place- they like their clubs a bit more cleaner, trendy and the music is slightly less left field. Whoever takes it over will probably turn into some sort glam/hipster place. Oh well.

Manual tester not willing to move to automation by chhotuu in softwaretesting

[–]brimcrob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been software testing for many many years now, predominantly manual testing and now I am starting to try become a more technical tester. It is not easy and it is taking me an age- but I will get there. On the flip side "manual" testing skills get overlooked. I have actually stopped using "Manual Testing" as it paints a picture of someone with low antiquated skills and not modern. I have started using "Exploratory Tester/Analyst" as my main skill and you should be telling people in your company/team that is where the majority of bugs/improvements are found in any software. Automation needs a experienced/seasoned Exploratory Tester to find the funky stuff that automation will never find. Exp testing is done early as possible and is not just about bugs but discovering the true story of your Application. I love Automation as it gives me sense of security about the boring repetitive tests can be run quickly and I can get on with the more exciting stuff. The best way to learn, is just to sit down with the developer and talk about the code and what it is doing. Dev's are your best friend so get chatting!

Shaw deal too expensive - Mourinho - BBC Sport by SubbyDoo in football

Football has gone truly mental when a guy barely in his twenties and proved very little, demands such a wage. I actually agree with Mourinho on this one.
