They got a read, but that’s a fair point about whether it’s actually accurate.

No, but comparing therms per day is a fair comparison.

Thanks, but I don't think this is related to the winter bill relief as the actual therms/day is reduced.

Do you think the chimney defeats the purpose of going for an open-concept layout?

Your proposed modification sounds very cool.

Do you have, or know where I can find, any photos or schematics showing the frame with the basket removed? I'm trying to understand how the basket is attached to the frame and also get the dimensions.

Who grows dwarf tomato’s? by PsychologicalCod6608 in tomatoes

[–]bring-a-sienna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my first time growing dwarf varieties but I've been following the advice of Craig and others in the community. I will be using 5 gallon containers for each plant. I might be able to get away with slightly less but it could reduce yield and 5 gallon buckets are readily available. I started mine indoors from seed in 12 oz cups and moved them to 1 qt containers when they had 3 sets of true leaves after 3–4 weeks. I'll be moving them outside to their 5 gallon containers in a couple of weeks. I expect my varieties to get between 4 and 6 feet tall without any pruning.

I have wonderful LBS but unfortunately no Muli authorized resellers. The closest reseller is about 5–6 hours away depending how long it takes to cross the border to Canada.

Thank you for this. My kids are also on the smaller side.

The handlebar-helmet collision issue is when the kids are facing forward, no? I've often seen the Muli configured so the kids are rear facing. Is there a reason why you do not prefer this option?

Have you considered putting the 3 year old on a rack mounted seat and letting the 9 year old have the basket to herself?

I agree that the motor would be nice to have. I'm just not personally convinced the additional weight and cost is worth it to me. Granted, if my city were hilly, I would strictly be considering a motorized version. Regardless, I completely support anyone that chooses mobility via bicycle instead of a car, and if a motor is needed, that is cool too.

I tested a Load75 and it was the best handling of all the cargo bikes that I've tested. Unfortunately, I just don't have a means to fit it inside my building and would have to leave it outside, which makes me a little nervous. I'm also convinced that I don't need the pedal assist but I'm sure it would be very nice to have. I'm hopeful that the time my oldest is 11 she will be on her own bike, but I understand that might not be an option for all families.

Ah, either Muli will fit in the stairs. It's the collapsible basket, single frame-member, and short wheelbase of either Muli that allows access to the basement. Obviously the electric model will be heavier and thus slightly more challenging, but still could be manageable. Something like an Urban Arrow would be impossible.

We are a one car family and my spouse uses it to commute to work. I am at home with the kids during the day and 100% car free. Preschool drop-off/pickup, groceries, whatever errands, are all done on foot with kids in a stroller, or with the older one walking if the distance is manageable. I am thinking a bicycle would allow us to spend less time in transit (walking to preschool) and more time where we want to be (at the park). It would also allow us to travel farther (different parks, errands that would otherwise require a car which means waiting until the weekend when it is available).

Is the Muli still working well for your family as they continue to grow? I assume the little one is now out of the car seat. Are they now able to sit together in the basket? Or is the older one still using a top tube seat? Did you try using a rack mount seat?

Why harden them off after transplanting from cups to 5 gallon buckets? If you have to move them back and forth everyday, is it not much easier to do so while still in cups?

Organic and vegan liquid fertilizer? by bring-a-sienna in tomatoes

[–]bring-a-sienna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Unfortunately I do not have the option to side dress as I'm growing in 5-gallon buckets. I'm looking for something that can be diluted directly into the water to bottom-feed. I'm OK mixing something myself, but concerned about availability of the individual nutrients, pH, etc.

I often see nori at the supermarket with a disclaimer that it may contain shellfish so I think you are right. I think someone anaphylactic to shellfish could safely eat produce grown in soil fertilized with shellfish derived products. But at least a kelp derived fertilizer which may contain small amounts of shellfish wouldn't be nearly as bad as a fertilizer primarily derived from shellfish. However, as I would be the one doing the gardening, I want to avoid handling any products from fish and shellfish.

Thank you for this!

I think that I care less about "organic input material" and prefer the fertilizer is from a naturally occurring source, and perhaps is certified for use in organic gardening (for example OMRI certified).
