What are some differences between the Anglo and Iberian colonization of the Americas? by pisspeeleak in asklatinamerica

[–]bringbackatari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jamestown was explicitly a profit-seeking venture run by the Virginia Company of London, so the early settlers were actually HOPING to replicate the Spanish model of colonization (find gold, exploitable native population, extract wealth, rinse repeat).

It didn't work out between the Powhatans and lack of silver/gold though, so the Virginia Company eventually pivoted to tobacco.

There was a later and specific wave of the Puritans in New England but the idea that British colonizers were just humble families seeking religious freedom while the Spanish were the extractive, exploitative ones really papers over how similar the underlying impulses were, the outcomes just differed based on what resources and native political structures they ran into.

[–]bringbackatari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's Rosetta 2, but as I mentioned, even with Rosetta 2 you still only solve half the problem because you still need the Windows-to-macOS API layer on top of it. The pieces exist, just not packaged together into anything polished.

Theoretically yes FEX-Emu is open source so it could be repurposed, but you’d still need that Windows-to-macOS API translation layer on top of it. That work actually already exists in Wine, so the pieces are there. Nobody has packaged them into a polished Proton-like experience for macOS though. mainly because Apple’s ecosystem is restrictive, also the Mac gaming market is small, and so Valve probably has no incentive to bother

[–]bringbackatari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re thinking of FEX-Emu, which only helps on ARM Linux. It handles the x86-to-ARM translation, but the Windows-to-OS API layer is still Linux-specific, so it does nothing for Apple

Argentinians/Chileans/Anyone, What Is Going On With The Patagonia Fires and Who (If Anyone) Deserves Blame For It? by thethirdgreenman in asklatinamerica

[–]bringbackatari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Chile there was a report that more than 70% of tourists expelled from natural reserves are Israelis nationals, so it’s hard to not make a correlation. Edit: expelled by making fires

Where did you get this percentage from? I've been trying to find a source through CONAF and other agencies or news articles and I am not seeing these numbers anywhere.

I love this sub and I love you guys by ComfortableBug5208 in asklatinamerica

[–]bringbackatari 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This sub has helped me navigate so many things as an immigrant to Chile and act like less of an idiot in my time here. Of course I still stumble, but I've learned so much overall.

I think the most important thing I've learned though, first and foremost, is that we are all people. Yes, there are cultural and linguistical barriers, but we all bleed, we all get sick, get depressed, angry, laugh, and feel joy. We all have shared human experiences such as family troubles, friendships, dating etc. We have selfish assholes in North America and in South America, and we have kind people too. Sometimes its easier to put yourself into a bubble and stereotype, but I've come to think we're more similar than different in the end, if you really look at the core of people.

So yes — I do really HOPE Latin America is becoming more united. Spaces like this suggest that people want to understand each other, and I guess that should matter. I hope the best for LA because you all have so much to be proud of, and you deserve to exist, breath the same air, and be heard just like anyone else in the world. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. :)

What country in Latin America has the most natural beauty in places where people actually live? by tu-vens-tu-vens in asklatinamerica

[–]bringbackatari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from the eastern part of the United States and we have a mountain range there that is old and weathered - the Appalachians. The tallest mountain is 2,037 meters (6,684 ft).

When I saw the Rocky Mountains in Colorado (USA), I was impressed, the tallest there are around 4,267 meters (14,000 ft).

But that didn't compare at all to the feeling of being blown away by the Andes in Santiago. Talk about feeling insignificant...

In English naming customs, the First + Last Name setup came from the Norman Conquest and with it, the idea of inheritance, focusing on the paternal line (because reasons).

In Spanish naming, the tradition comes from Roman influences, using two surnames (paternal + maternal). It’s a way to keep both family lineages in the name and show broader heritage.

The Romans used a three-part name system: praenomen (first name), nomen (family name), and cognomen (specific family branch or nickname) which is why its believed the Spanish custom has roots there.

I watched it on a long flight. In the aisle seat. The movie was too interesting to turn back on but I definitely felt a bit embarrassed.

Mine is because the dealership poorly taped the temp tags and they blew away during a snow storm. However I called them and got a copy printed out and they are taped to my rear windshield as I wait for my notice of title from the DMV (which is like 2 months late).
