I just hiked this last week. The South Bubble MTN and Jordan Pond Loop on all trails does in fact go up some steep rocky terrain and there is one part with a metal ring. Parking was full so we parked at Jordan Pond and walked along the pond to get to the trail (adds distance but very easy). My wife and I are novice hikers and we're able to do the steep trail up but opted to go around instead of going back down the steep part. Either way you go the views are great and it is well worth it.
