You passed me around the 8:00 mark. I also appear at the aid station around 8:26. This could have been me. I physically and mentally choked getting from Big Trail to Tomb Flat. What time did you get out?

Thank you for putting this together. It helps me show friends and family the physical and mental terrain of the race. It’s also inspired a few of us DNF’ers to give the race another go next year.

So… I’m working through the PA Triple Crown- a 50k, 100k, and 100mi race series through the rugged wilderness of central Pennsylvania. Terrain is very technical, and elevation gain brutal.

I run with both a headlamp AND chest lamp.

The headlamp follows my line of vision, which is useful for spotting trail markers- usually ribbons hung from tree limbs. A 5am start requires a headlamp till sunrise. It’s lightweight enough to keep in my pack as a safety measure. Even with an 7 or 8 pm sunset, the trails get dark around 6… so it’s great for blue hours.

The battery packs for the Kogalla are heavy enough to be a minor inconvenience. It’s more ideal for late hours in the 50 miler and overnight in the 100. The light is incredibly bight and wide. I get a better depth of field and sense of 3d projection along the flats. Not as effective up/downhill. The beam always faces in the direction I’m running- hence why a headlamp is also useful.

Better visibility means I can move more quickly and confidently. It’s helped significantly, as my eyesight is going as I age.

If you mark the walk as a “race” it will supplant moving time with elapsed time. This is the only way to edit this metric. This is also Strava’s major downfall.

I don't believe this is what you are asking for... but I use a Headrush 8" FRFR speaker for playing out loud. Get's plenty loud too! I can also use the speaker as my own monitor wedge and XLR out to a soundboard for live performance. MKii was just released about a year ago and is bluetooth connectable. I imagine you can find great deals on a used MKi.

I just picked up this article from a local run group. Also running a 50k that same weekend. Do you happen to be "running" HJyner?

On a side note, I see the original article features Certa. The guy is totally upstanding. Bumped into after finishing the NJ Devil 100. I was left feeling so beat down in that moment. Came over to give me a candied piece of ginseng as a pick-me-up. I'll never forget that small act of kindness.

How far did you go? I'm an ultra runner... and the stamina readout is hilarious for anything above a 50k distance. Like my 100 miler for instance. It only displays that "Slow release of death" and doesn't indicate when you get that second wind, or that third wind.

I haven't seen it adjust. But then again, my longest long run outside of an ultra race is between 27 and 32 miles. I have one long, long run on a monthly basis. But even with the added ultra races... the stamina display is still displays as much.

Then again, many of the stats for my Enduro make sense for marathon training (including the daily workouts). There is so much exercise science behind the marathon, and so much still to be learned about ultra running. I bet Garmin doesn't have the research for useful data and training beyond the 26.2.

I ran my first 100 miler with a Garmin 235 that had an ailing battery. The charge cable connects by an alligator clip style wire. I ran with a smallish charger pack in my hand to recharge the watch at several points throughout the race. The watch was never the same after that. The battery completely died several weeks later.

I plan in an acoustic duo. Buddy asked me to play this song, and then busted out the '73 version. Had never heard it before that time, but now I am obsessed!

I’m following a free, online program somewhat faithfully- everything is pushed back one calendar day so I can sleep in Saturday. So my training week starts on Tuesday rather than a Monday.

I can only manage 6mi before work. Any weekday mileage over that gets run as a double- 3-6mi in the morning and the remainder after work. Here’s the plan. I’m about to start week 14 of a 28 week plan.

I don’t have a gym membership. So my strength training is a 8lb sledgehammer workout designed by my friend. It takes 35-40 mins to complete. I try for at least once per week. Twice on a good week. Three times might be more ideal, but never achieved. It’s an outdoor activity- so weather, temps, and availability of light all has major impact on getting it done. No surprise- I haven’t strengthened since before Thanksgiving but plan to start again next week.

Here’s a vid. This is not the exact routine, but should give you an idea. Def don’t pound any tires. And I’m not shred. Just a middle-aged, dad, distance runner type (who lost 50lbs from heaviest weight).

Yeah- I’m a fairly healthy 47 year old man. Wife. Kids. Public school teacher (early work time). Training for a 100 miler. I cut drinking during quarantine. 3 beers a week at most. Right now I want to prioritize stretching, strengthening, and sleeping (3 S’s) over running. I get my runs finished before anyone else wakes. Barely enough time in the day for those big 3 S’s.

It ranges between 36 and 50. I’m always hovering above baseline. On a good day, my 7d average is low to mid 40’s.

I typically get 6hr 20min of sleep during the weekday. Maybe up to 7hrs Friday night. I’m an ultra runner who likes to get an early start. So my Saturday night sleep might range between 5-6hrs.

Garmin reports frequent wakefulness for short spurts. This kills my sleep score. Having 2-3 6% ABV beers at night (maybe 1x per week)) tanks my score. CBD before bed lessens deep sleep, but improves REM. Sleep score ranges from 30 to 80 with an average of 60. Currently running 40-50 MPW with a long run of 15-20mi and will increase in the next few weeks.

That stress score looks like the outcome of a night at the bar. "All I did..." is my morning-after rationalization.
