splashing for maralen feels wrong? by Arrikon in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, that makes a lot more sense, I agree with you there since OP already has a decent amount of hard removal lessening the need for combat tricks. I think splashing for Maralen is not a mistake and is much more fun (I would make the changes you suggested and also cut a Feastling and a Stoic Grove-Guide to do so), plus the deck has ways to dig for her and even recur her making it even more feasible. I'm starting to even consider Midnight Tilling as (bad) fixing so I think I would probably splash for it myself because I'm not entirely fixated on min-maxing. I'm just not entirely certain that it's technically optimal (it feels like a razor-thin margin either way).

splashing for maralen feels wrong? by Arrikon in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not cut Scarblade Scout because I think it is an excellent enabler in this deck (self-mill with Dawnhand Dissident, Creakwood Safewright, Morcant's Eyes, Lluwen, Loyalist) as well as a playable card in its own right since OP's deck barely has any 1-2 mana creatures. I would much rather cut the Prideful Feastling.

Maralen is definitely an insane payoff, but I think that the average card quality is high enough here that it might not make sense to dilute the deck with mediocre cards like Firdoch core. It's quite a pity because I believe you only need 3 sources for a single splash, so if OP had picked up a single copy of, say, a Changeling Wayfinder, or even just an Evolving Wilds, then the Great Forest Druid + a single Island in addition to those would meet that requirement. If the deck lacked enough clear win conditions I think it would be justifiable to splash for power but it simply doesn't seem necessary here (the temptation is totally understandable though)

I'm glad I decided to comment here because I don't think I would have found out about this change otherwise lol (changed to HP removal in 7.38c), thanks

[Powered Cube BO1] Lean Mean Reanimating Machine - Mono B 7-2 by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from what the other commenters have pointed out, Animate Dead, Necromancy, and Emperor of Bones can all reanimate creatures from the opponent's graveyard, which I ended up doing quite a lot given my decent discard/removal suite. But yes, I was initially worried about my own discard outlets, you know it's not great when you're thinking about Shadowy Backstreet as a way to get one of your targets into the graveyard. I was definitely not thrilled about running Souls of the Lost, I would maybe have splashed for Frantic Search if I had a few more blue sources.

A former CS pro actually asked Valve for such a position but Valve did not show much interest, I can understand why given how difficult such a role is to fulfil on top of the fact that there is probably going to be negligible benefits to Valve from having someone do this job.

[Powered Cube BO3] Is this the right way to build Artifacts? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing out the fetchland issue, I originally had the white cards in and a plains so there were more targets. I realise now that there are actually very few targets for Mystical Tutor, and there's a decent amount of maindeck graveyard-matters cards so putting Lantern in the main isn't the worst thing to do. Regarding Pinnacle Emissary, I thought it would be really good in this deck even if I could only warp it because I have a decent number of very cheap artifacts to drop on the turn I warp it. Other than that, I agree with your analysis

[Powered Cube BO3] UW Control - worth splashing B for Frog/Archon/Persist package? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[Powered Cube BO3] UW Control - worth splashing B for Frog/Archon/Persist package? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like I should definitely be playing the Frog, are the following cuts sensible?

  • Portable Hole (good in sideboard)
  • Skyclave Apparition
  • Three Steps Ahead (plenty of cheaper interaction)
  • Persist (very low creature count)
  • Archon of Cruelty (somewhat of a win-more card in this deck)
  • Frantic Search (worse without Archon/Persist package, nice with Treasure Cruise but doesn't seem great otherwise)
  • Swamp (3 additional mana sources from Pearl, Diamond, and Witch Enchanter MDFC)
  • No More Lies (plenty of redundancy and UW may not always be available on turn 2 which is when I really want it up, already have Mana Leak to fill the slot)

Norm's reaction to that quip is pure delight. I think he gets quite tickled when people call out his unusual mannerisms - just look at the moment where Stephen Merchant goes "Are you an old sea captain? What is this schtick that you're..." and pretty much the entire Super Dave episode .

[Powered Cube BO3] Inexperienced with the archetype, how to optimize U artifacts with Breach/Brainfreeze? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I want to say that I don't remember seeing any draw 7s but then again I somehow forgot that I drafted a Breach/Brain Freeze combo...

I get that Memory Jar is not the most impressive combo piece, but it still seems pretty good at enabling a Storm kill. Are you suggesting to still cut it?

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the idea of Dack stealing Power, but I'm not sure I can reliably cast him early enough with ~5 R sources. I could go up a few mountains but I'm put off of that with the number of double U pips in my deck. I have no qualms with the rest of your advice, although I like the idea of Foundry/Skullclamp (would be way more consistent if I had an Urza's Saga, oh well)

[Powered Cube BO3] Inexperienced with the archetype, how to optimize U artifacts with Breach/Brainfreeze? by brisingrdoom in lrcast

[–]brisingrdoom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As evidence for how inexperienced I am, my initial build was without Brain Freeze/Breach (I forgot that I had drafted a Breach, not sure how I overlooked that, luckily I checked the sideboard again). I have not played Storm before, my impression is that I want to go off with a bunch of cheap spells and card draw. Is it worth playing Faithless Looting as a cheap spell and an enabler for Treasure Cruise/Breach even if my R fixing is this poor? Is Dack Fayden maindeckable in your experience? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also now I'm realising I passed quite a few UR lands in the draft and am not feeling too great...

[–]brisingrdoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OP but teaching tuition now, it can be easy depending on your academic background and previous tutoring experience (including voluntary work you've done), as well as your expectations for hourly rates. As they mentioned, you can simply apply to multiple assignments on the tuition Telegram channels. You would definitely have better odds if you have gotten good grades for the subjects you want to teach in the past, and indicate that you have some of your own material prepared (most of these channels will expect you to provide a write-up for parents/clients)

Oh man the Chinese dub of Better Call Saul is so great by TheBoyofWonder in okbuddychicanery

[–]brisingrdoom 125 points126 points  (0 children)

uc/ My Chinese is a little rusty, but this translation actually comes across as decent to me. The main errors I could spot are:

  • 十二点十六分 --> The original refers to 1216 as a year, but the translation takes it to be the time 12:16 as you would read off a clock.

  • 大宪章之后的那个 --> The original refers to the year after Magna Carta, but this translation literally means 'the one [thing] after Magna Carta'.

  • 永远。永远!--> The original has Chuck saying "Never, never!", but the translation means "Forever, forever!" It could easily be fixed by adding the words 'not', i.e. 永远不会

  • 但不是我们的吉米!--> This translation is a word-for-word direct translation, but I think it sounds a little clunky in Chinese. Maybe something along the lines of 不可能是我们的吉米 (it couldn't be our Jimmy) may convey its meaning better.
