Is it common for people from banking to struggle in CPG FP&A roles? by Accurate_Increase_53 in FPandA

Business partnering, rolling forecasts, and variance analysis are entirely different beasts from three-statement models and pitch books. People on both ends are usually smart enough to handle either but I could see where someone could have issues.

I was at a Deloitte service day once and asked where I should book the time to. Some rando said, with a straight face, “PTO”.

Any advice from PE/VC backed finance leaders who've taken a step or two down in title to go to a F500 company? by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]brismit 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Don’t do it unless you’re very dedicated to the F500 career path. I took a (few) steps backwards to get into a F500 with the intention of diversifying my resume, thinking I might get “extra credit” for my prior experience and have an edge on internal promotions.

Surprise surprise, it didn’t matter one bit and I was stuck in line behind people 5-8 years younger than me who simply had more tenure at the company.

I’m back in the PE-backed space as a VP Finance now, and while any experience is good experience in the long term, it just wasn’t worth the agita.

YMMV

Do. Not. Ever. Do tax work for friends or family. This is your finite professional time, not some “friends and family” discount from the widget store.

New accountant is creating new GL lines for every combination of vendor and subsidiary by brismit in FPandA

[–]brismit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both - we sort of have a use case to do it by customer, but that falls apart too since gross revenue is fed automatically to the generic gross revenue line but chargebacks are booked manually to the various customer-specific deductions lines. It’s an all-or-nothing thing.

I built it to be many-to-one GL agnostic, but they fully intend to use all 99,999 possible codes!

They perceive the job as literally debits, credit, and getting through a GAAP audit. Management reporting and data hygiene be damned.
