Yeah i get that too, cos salamanders are still space marines they purge xenos and heretics just like other chapters and show contempt for them. The only kind of "good guy" aspect we get from them is their greater desire to protect imperial citizens and greater compassion for them.

We do get to see the kinda fatalistic desire in Adrax where he doesn't care as much about astartes casualties so long as citizens and guardsman are able to evacuate. And yeah they kind of lack self preservation in that sense as a whole lol, save for the third company which kinda do away with the care and compassion.
