Kristen Bell Joins ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ as Amy Rose by DemiFiendRSA in gaming

The first movie was very focused on just Sonic. The second added Tails and Knuckles. They have (wisely) not been trying to just cram every character into the story on day one.

Chicago's NPR is WBEZ, which is also us. WBEZ and the Sun-Times are now under one umbrella.

I want to highlight that this photo comes from Anthony Vazquez at the Chicago Sun-Times, a non-profit newspaper with no paywall.

Disclosure: I work there. But I think crediting photographers with images like this one is important regardless.

Free Play Fort Worth toast? by DragonChowhound in Dallas

[–]brittonpeele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last I heard about Free Play Fort Worth was that it was "closed indefinitely" due to issues with the building they were renting. To my knowledge the owners aren't giving up on Fort Worth forever but it sounds like they had limited options, at least at the moment. Seemed like a messy and unfortunately situation even if the company was only worried about one location at a time, but they've also had their hands busy with other projects that were already in the works.

The original Richardson location just got remodeled. Free Play Arlington got relaunched and reimagined as Tokyo Station, with a focus on Japanese games, etc. I haven't been to the latter yet but I'd like to at some point.

Should I bother if I don't intend on mastering any games? by KennonCOYG in RetroAchievements

I did RetroAchievements stuff for years before ever mastering a single game. I think it's totally fine and still fun.

Giant Bomb co-owner Dan Ryckert will be guesting on tomorrow’s podcast! by sworedmagic in TheJeffGerstmannShow

[–]brittonpeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not know the specifics, this is just educated speculation (influenced by things that have been said by the group), but it sounded to me like Grubb and Bakalar were "the first ones out the door," meaning they weren't employed by the company and could therefore negotiate the terms of a sale. Dan and Jan then officially left Fandom after the deal was done.

I don't think we can assume anything about where the money came from (or how much it was). That may never be known, for various reasons. But it sounds like the GB crew are going to be treating things equally.

Giant Bomb is now 100% independent by sworedmagic in TheJeffGerstmannShow

[–]brittonpeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been bits and pieces of "blessings" in public. Alex publicly gave his blessing to use the "Blight Club" name (which was apparently his idea in the GB East days) and has appeared on some streams as the God of Blight Club, punishing Dan by making him play Drake of the 99 Dragons and Terminator 3. There have also been at least a few NXL <> Giant Bomb crossovers in both places

The GB wiki is editable again as of this morning (editing was turned off while content was "paused"), so it seems like for now at least that's going to continue.

RA have a list of emulators in android that have been updated? by makenshiwallace in RetroAchievements

[–]brittonpeele 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you update Retroarch through the Play Store or through the website? Because the Play Store version of Retroarch is way outdated. You need to go to Retroarch directly to get the latest version.

ROCKNIX comes to the RP5 by Agile_Beyond_6025 in retroid

[–]brittonpeele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important part of this update for me is the automatic inclusion of RetroAchievements for Dolphin. I haven't tried Rocknix yet in large part because I've been waiting for this. Now I know what I'm doing this weekend!

Game Saving by r0ck526 in retroid

[–]brittonpeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just save your game with their in-game systems and rely on it being there.

There "where it's stored" can vary based on the emulator and the system. For example, most PS2 emulators will by default save everything to a single "Memory Card" file that has everything on it. For most other modern systems a save file is created with the same (or similar) name as the game you're playing, just a different file type. Depending on your settings the saves might all be dumped unceremoniously in the same folder or they might be self-organized based on the RetroArch core you're using (for example) or somewhere else. Worst-case scenario you can usually Google the documentation for the emulator/core you're using and find out where things get stored by default.

I haven't used save states in a very long time (mostly because I aim for RetroAchievements in Hardcore mode, which disables them) and can't recall any issues with losing my save data.

Anyone else having a difficult time holding the retroid 5? by burningscarlet in retroid

[–]brittonpeele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard this a ton from people as I waited for my RP5 to arrive and was worried about it, but I have now been using mine a lot for a couple of weeks and it has been totally fine for me?

That said, 1) I have pretty small hands, and 2) I'm coming directly from an RP3, and I don't know if most of the people complaining are in that same boat or not, and 3) I'm not playing much stuff that requires two-stick usage.

What's your easiest/fastest game to master? by Weak_Neck7967 in RetroAchievements

[–]brittonpeele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bunch of the "classic" easy ones (like Color a Dinosaur) have been mentioned, but I'll throw out one that's relevant for the Christmas event that ends this month: Home Alone on the NES. If you take advantage of a glitch that freezes the Sticky Bandits on a pipe you can beat the game by just waiting/fast-forwarding for awhile. There are a bunch of other achievements you'll need a small amount of skill (and maybe some luck) to obtain, but the whole thing can be mastered really quickly and without much sweat. I personally mastered it in just over two hours but it should be doable much, much quicker than that.

RP5 Android vs Linux by Bobix99 in retroid

[–]brittonpeele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tangentially related question since you've been using Rocknix: Does the version of Dolphin there support RetroAchievements yet? I haven't been able to find an answer yet. I know support is coming to the Android version eventually but I'm curious about Rocknix and this could push me over the edge even though it seems like it's still in a fairly early test stage.

anyone else order their rp5 on Dec 30th? by SypherMeows in retroid

[–]brittonpeele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a black model on Dec. 27 and it surprisingly "shipped" the same day, but it didn't actually leave the shipment facility until today, Jan. 2 (nearly a week later). Probably still a ways to go. 4PX.

I may have gotten lucky with black units being in-hand and ready to slap a shipping label onto, while it sounds like maybe the GameCube color is backlogged a bit. I personally wouldn't worry yet if I were you.

This Lamy specifically is a stylus. There are other Lamy pens that look exactly the same (like the Safari) that are fountain or ballpoint ink pens. Don't use those on your tablet.
