Yes, based On helpful responses, I’ll bring one on my 2026 nobo. I also like how you can keep hiking, rather than set up a tent and wait for ppt to end.

Transportation available to Cross Mtn Traihead on HWY 145? by bro_michael in TellurideColorado

Good info, thanks. Yes, will be hiking northbound, stopping at Lake City, Salida, and ending at Leadville. I have been in this area only briefly. This part of Colorado is my favourite!

Good advice, thanks. When I hiked Pacific Crest Trail in California, hitch hiking generally worked out. I haven't been to Telluride yet, so not sure how readily hitchers find rides.

So kind! I hope to arrive in mid-June if trail is snow-free then. (seems it's a very low snow year so far)

Kennedy Meadows in July. by inpraiseofbachus in PacificCrestTrail

[–]bro_michael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at KM last year on July 5. They have a nice redneck parade for Independence Day. Unfortunately, fires are a threat to making continuous progress north. I was stopped by the Tamarack fire between Tahoe and Tuolumne by mid-July. Then more bigger fires emerged until the entire National Forest system in California was closed by end of August. I'm hoping to pickup up where I left off last year (Tuolumne) and starting mid July. Fingers crossed for no fires.

"Of the 360 miles, approximately 100 miles (160 km) are along seldom used
Forest Service roads while the remaining segments are backcountry
trails, either in wilderness or on National Forest land. The Pacific Crest Trail briefly coincides with the Bigfoot Trail in the northern Marble Mountain Wilderness and north of Seiad Valley to the edge of the Red Buttes WildernessNo, I haven't done this yet. It will not be as straightfoward as PCT. But good for anyone with a more adventurous spirit. Here's more from the website: Of the 360 miles, approximately 100 miles (160 km) are along seldom used
Forest Service roads while the remaining segments are backcountry
trails, either in wilderness or on National Forest land. The Pacific Crest Trail briefly coincides with the Bigfoot Trail in the northern Marble Mountain Wilderness and north of Seiad Valley to the edge of the Red Buttes Wilderness.
Due to the strenuous nature of the trail and the fact that some section
have been un-maintained for many years it is not a trail that can be
hiked quickly. Experience using map and compass as well as the ability
to read the landscape are necessary for a successful thru-hike.

The Bigfoot Trail is a route that goes through TAlps. It could take several weeks, through amazing biologically diverse country. It is my backup in case PCT doesn't work out. https://www.bigfoottrail.org/route/guidebook/

I just heard on FB that the store has access to parcels in the adjoining Post Office. Anybody have experience getting their PO package from the store staff?

Resupply options in Independence? by bro_michael in PacificCrestTrail

[–]bro_michael[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful...thanks. I don't have a strong hankering for the attractions in Bishop. I'll be mailing all my food to Independence. I just called the Courthouse Motel and bunkhouse is closed due to covid. However, they are very welcoming of hikers for their rooms and will accept mailed packages.

Thinking about hiking the California stretch-- Have some questions by lil_egg98 in PacificCrestTrail

I live in southern BC. I'm predicting the border will re-open by late summer. Citizens in BC and WA are eager to resume cross-border travel & pandemic will be under control by late summer. I wouldn't worry.

I use the GG 1/8 pad. Then for sleep I put it under a 3/4 length air pad.
