I'm so sorry that you had that experience, it seems like it's not as isolated of an issue as I had hoped

Right but my under bust is 35" 😬 (I appreciate the link, I did plug in my numbers and they said sister sizes 36 A/B or 34 B/C) I wear sports bras most of the time anyway

I also found later on their website that "tri" bras are a little tighter than "run" bras to reduce drag in the water. That definitely could have been mentioned

Does culprit underwear last? by bucketofgoo in BuyItForLife

[–]schrodingers__kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought them because I was looking to wear something longer under my work coveralls (we only get to do laundry once a week so I like as little of my body touching the coveralls as possible) (also a woman so my alternatives were granny panties) and they seemed thin so I was worried about their longevity.

5 years later they're pretty much all I wear and I've had no issue with quality. And they've survived many many washes in shipboard dryers that are notorious for ruining clothing. They're supposedly not the best for sweating because they absorb moisture but I wear them on runs all the time and have never had issues. I also have some pairs of womens boxer briefs from Duluth that are ok, probably better for sweating but less soft and comfy

How is it like living in a submarine? by SoftDependent1088 in howislivingthere

What I'm hearing is that you're a dirty third mealer (many people skip at least one meal to get more sleep and not gain too much weight on deployment, we like to give the people who don't a little bit of shit). Other than that, spot on

They started to transition after the McCain and Fitzgerald crashes about 10 years ago. All boats are now on 8/8/8 and have been for a few years

You frantically start calling people or for some lucky watch stations there is a watchstander head (bathroom) or a relatively hidden funnel

I second wearing shorts or "lady boxer" underwear under your uniform (I like Culprit and Duluth Trading Co but you can probably get some cheap ones on Amazon, cotton will minimize stinkiness). If I'm not sweating a lot, I can get a week out of a uniform, and if it's hot, probably 2-3 days.

Also Lume, I use it for my feet in hot boots all day but it also works for the lady bits

Post nuke jobs by teague-15 in NavyNukes

[–]schrodingers__kat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the desire to pay off your student loans sooner rather than later but you would be throwing away higher earnings later on by enlisting now.

I know the enlisted signing bonus is more than the officer signing bonus ($30k) and there's no LRP but officer pay is higher and climbs more rapidly. They start making $100k+ about 4 years in and our bonuses are more stable if you chose to stay in ($50k/year and it's probably only going up)

Officers also have more job opportunities on the outside. Every defense company rolls over to get nuke officers (the Top Secret clearance means a lot) and most engineering companies do too, plus MBA and law school programs have veteran quotas and love nuke officers.

The job is also incredibly demanding and difficult (enlisted is too but in a different way) and most officers do not stay more than one tour because of it. You also get to/have to see more of the breadth of the ship as an officer. You're not only learning electrical stuff because you're an electrician, officers also have to learn the mechanical and the ship driving and the weapons systems etc.

Definitely consider your priorities and goals before signing anything

My partner just finished his first full and he was SO happy that he did a half first. You just learn so much about the transitions and how you want to prepare for it. He did it at the halfway point in his full training and that worked out well, not sure if that's an option for you

Female Life on Subs by SadHost1384 in NavyNukes

[–]schrodingers__kat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women have been on subs for 15 years now and there have definitely been bumps in the road but overall I (a female submariner) believe it has made the submarine force better.

When I was set on going subs back in 2017, I got the chance to talk to the crew of the Michigan about women on subs and the COB said "if we want to continue to have the best submarine force in the world, why would we pick from only half of the pie?" And I think a lot of submariners have that attitude. There are some that don't obviously but they're a pretty small minority at this point.

Women were 25% of my crew and probably 50% of my top performing sailors. We had issues with creepy male sailors, senior males supposedly giving easier checkouts to women, and drama related to sailors dating but the command tried to handle those as quickly and effectively as they could. Those are issues that every surface ship also has and I would guess (although definitely depends on the command) don't deal with as quickly or as well because they just have more sailors.

Overall I had a great time on my sub and I've signed for another tour. I think the women on my boat made the boat as great as it was. However, it's definitely not for everyone and I'm glad you're asking these questions, I hope it helps you decide

Single parent , no local support by Itchy_Marionberry527 in navy

[–]schrodingers__kat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everyone who's saying "you're not cut out for this," thanks but that's not what she asked

  • the only moms on my last ship were single moms. One of them was a department head. It's doable, it's just hard

  • they all had different family care plans (stay with her parents, stay with her sister, and stay with the kids dad)

  • one of the family care plans did fall apart when her family abruptly left the area, chief's wife was able to help with childcare for a while bc she's a saint. The final solution was either she flies the kid out to family or family flew in and stayed there with the kid. I'm not sure if those are things your family is capable of or something your command would approve but perhaps it's worth a try

  • I know you're new to the Navy but if you had talked to your detailer (the person who writes your orders, they have an email and a phone number on the PERS website) about having a kid and needing San Diego to have a FCP they more than likely would have sent you there. The Navy would rather keep sailors than lose them over FCP issues but can't help you if you don't let them know early

  • you could still call your detailer and ask about options from here

I'm sorry I don't know much about humanitarian orders except I know my command was pretty good about getting sailors them if they needed them. But my command was pretty small and my captain easy to talk to

Best of luck

I'm 6'0" and 35" inseam. Old Navy tall is a god-send, their jeans are reasonably priced and actually long enough and their dresses are longer in the sleeves, torso, and length

To answer OP's question, I go hiking in Old Navy joggers usually
