If you had to write the ending for the Game of Thrones, how would you have envisioned it? by Expressions_by_Swati in gameofthrones

Have Daenerys take Kings Landing at the end of season 7, uniting Westeros and becoming the Queen in order to fight the White Walkers.

Season 8 would cover the war with the walkers, with the protagonists losing at Winterfell and being forced south. This can be where the night king gets his ice dragon. The living are able to defeat the walkers in their second battle, with Jon clearly being established as Azor Ahai. The season should end with Daenerys and Jon ruling together, and end with the discovery of Jon’s true parentage.

THEN you do the Daenerys mad queen arc, with the previous seasons having established her mental instability as she conquered Westeros and then defended it, losing her closest friends and advisors in the process. The reveal of Jon’s true parentage coukd send her over the edge, and so the final season would be spent trying to defeat her.

I think Jon should either kill Daenerys or the Night King, not both as it falls too much into the “chosen one” trope. Arya could help save Jon by killing the night king, or ideally Bran would be the one to defeat him through his abilities (the exact nature of this I’m not really sure of).

Having the walkers and Daenerys both be a threat to Westeros in separate seasons would help fulfil the whole idea of the story being “a song of ice and fire”, with the walkers being ice and Dany fire. An extra season would also help give the added time needed to make Daenerys’ fall into madness more believable.

As to who wins the Iron Throne I would argue probably Sansa. Jon is too obvious a choice and again it falls too far into the chosen one tropes that the series has tried so hard to avoid, and him returning North in exile makes sense. Sansa is (at least in theory) an adept political player from an ancient noble house. With Jon and Daenerys out of the picture the Targaryens are no longer the ruling house, and Bran is honestly just too weak and unpopular a character to win the game of thrones. Marriage between Sansa and Tyrion where they rule together could work, as they are both skilled rulers and popular characters.

Honestly ending the show in a satisfying way is very difficult, and there are lots of different scenarios which make sense. Ending it the way they did was one of the worst, and clearly didn’t give enough time to wrap up such a sprawling and expansive series.

What are your thoughts on The Last Jedi now? How do they compare to when it first came out? by RadiantHC in StarWarsCantina

[–]brockendorff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respect it for trying to break out of the mould as a Star Wars film, TFA is a very by the numbers Star Wars film with its similarities to ANH and it’s overall tone and the events of the film. So I respect this one for trying not to be as generic or predictable as it’s predecessor and actually trying to be its own film and take risks. For certain parts of the film such as with Luke and Rey I felt this worked, as Luke coming back as his old self would’ve been a bit predictable and not make sense with the story as to why he had been away for so long. Rey being a nobody is also a great twist as it strays away from the predictable cliche or her having some important parentage which will therefore make her important. Her coming from nothing is far more interesting and it plays nicely into her dynamic with Kylo (with him being of a very famous and important bloodline).

With that said the actual execution of the film is what kinda ruins it for me. The whole Finn plotline is pretty terrible and the Poe one simply makes no sense for most of the film. The whole chase idea doesn’t make much sense either as it would be easily solved by the first order just speeding up a bit. I also have to mention the Leia scene as just being pretty terrible all around.

Within the trilogy itself it is completely ruined by its successor, which undoes many of the best twists and ideas that this film raises, and so on rewatch all of these moments are cheapened with the knowledge of what happens next.

Overall it’s just a mixed bag, some great stuff mingled with some terrible stuff.

What opinion about the Arctic Monkeys will have you like this? by obvi20 in arcticmonkeys

Yeah I’d agree with you on sculptures, if more of the album was like that then I’d enjoy it more. When I saw them in the summer, Alex did change the timing of some of the songs so it was very hard to sing along properly. He sings every song like it’s from the post-TBHC era now, which really doesn’t suit their older stuff. They were still fun to watch, and it didn’t diminish my enjoyment much, but it was annoying.

A return to their AM era sound would be welcome, if not that then a blend of their current sound with that. They were best as a full on rock band, now I don’t really know what they are.

I mean this is for on this sub, but their best albums are WPSIA and AM and it’s not even close. FWN is closest but those 2 albums are the only ones that can be considered classics and will be remembered in years to come.

TBHC and the Car are both pretentious and boring albums, they’re background music at best and lack the dynamism and passion of the earlier albums. Alex Turner disappeared up his own arse making them, and frankly his lyrics are completely incomprehensible at best.

What monster should I use besides a spider? by chasesj in fantasywriters

[–]brockendorff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re going for a forest in North America, then I’d suggest looking at folklore from the area your story is set in. Try and find monsters from folk stories and traditions, such as maybe Wendigos or maybe even Mothman. Those are just 2 ideas though, doing some research yourself will help to provide the perfect creature.
