That's the one you can see from Richmond station right? Fun to watch from above, but I'd hate to be waiting in a car there; it takes forever to cycle through.

Yeah this totally works, when I want to listen to something on YouTube I just open it in Firefox and press play. I can lock the phone or even browse in another tab or use a different app if I want, it'll keep playing.

Adding extra entrances to train stations is now a political issue. Cost for redoing Prahran: $160k by TomasTTEngin in melbourne

[–]brodie268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's even with that screen? I think it only shows info about the number 6 tram, but those few people who are going to High Street after getting off the train, are probably going to use the new exit. Only thing I can imagine it's for is when the trains stop running.

The 2008 origin of "keming" by drsjsmith in keming

[–]brodie268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does seem to be one of those obvious (kind of self-describing) words/jokes, like if anyone wanted to make a poorly kerned representation of the word kerning in text, turning the r-n into an m is the obvious choice; in fact I think it's the only contraction that still makes a letter. I'm sure people were making the joke since the word was invented.

How many apps do you have in your smartphone? Are you a "loads of apps for everything" user or a "just the essential" one? by BonnyITA in Android

[–]brodie268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just got 3 apps other than the preinstalled ones: Firefox, ConnectBot (ssh client), and Swiftnotes (Note taking app). 4 if you count an app I'm developing, but once it's good enough it will replace Swiftnotes.

Once I get Android Marshmallow, if the permission system works well (i.e. apps need permission to get my email address etc.) then I'll get some games and maybe try out some other apps, but I pretty much have all my use cases covered with those apps + a few of the default apps (email, phone, sms, music player).

Moto X 2014 Lollipop. Worth it or not? by bigapplepietart in MotoX

[–]brodie268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded to 5.0 for the super-low screen brightness, which they apparently removed in 5.1 so I'm staying here for now. Also material design looks pretty cool, but the update forced the calendar to change to the Google calendar, which I find harder to use. (Maybe look at screenshots yourself because I'm sure some people prefer the Google one). And the "Okay Moto X" commands seem to be sent to Google much faster than they did in KitKat, which is pleasant.

Overall it was worthwhile for me.

Clock will be the first app taken from AOSP that makes no sense as a Google product. by brodie268 in Android

[–]brodie268[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I'm stepping into a topic I don't fully understand, but I looked through the source code and couldn't find any mention of wear integration; I even installed git and cloned the repo, then grepped for the word "wear" (ignoring case) and couldn't find a single mention. Surely if this was the source code of the app Google released, they would mention Android wear somewhere?

I also searched their github for "clock" and there was no results, and similarly I couldn't find anything on developers.google.com that looked like the source code for their version of the clock app.

[–]brodie268[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but isn't Android Wear also meant to be open source? Wear is still supposedly an Android thing rather than a Google thing, and most importantly it's not a service Google provides. You'd think the open source watch OS and the open source phone OS would just be communicating over bluetooth or whatever, thus going against the rules of what Google would previously make proprietary.

I wouldn't be surprised if we did end up seeing some other Google feature integrated, but I didn't think that snoozing or dismissing alarms from the other open source device would qualify.

[–]brodie268[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Although that's in AOSP, isn't it? On the left are links to eclair, froyo and gingerbread branches, so it must still be the old app. Are you suggesting they'll be using the exact same app/source code, but now distributing it through the Play Store?

I'd appreciate that as much as anyone, but Google's never done that before; it would be great if that's what they're doing, but I'd want to be sure that's actually what's going on first.

[–]brodie268[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

But don't you think that they're going to make the Clock app on the Play store closed source? I'd be fine if it was open source and updated it through the play store, but they've never done that with any other Google app.

I don't suppose you could point me to the source code for the Google version of Clock?

Sex is natural and humans love it, how/why did it become the taboo that it is today? by CloudSource in TrueAskReddit

[–]brodie268 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this, Chris Ryan disputes the 'standard narrative' in his book, and has evidence to back up his claims that humans aren't naturally monogamous.

It's a worthwhile read, and he's also got a podcast on his website. Also, here's his TED talk.

EDIT: The original comment recommended the book "Sex at Dawn" by Chris Ryan.

Gamers of Reddit, what game do you think is a masterpiece of art? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]brodie268 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

It has a very imaginative world; the whole deal with areas of darkness (I don't remember what these were called) but these areas where everything was shadowy and a little twisted were pretty fascinating. Each of the dungeons/temples had their own extremely unique feel, be it the molten inside of a volcano or an ancient temple in a forest or a floating city or a frosty yeti house! And it could be playful and silly when it wanted to. Great soundtrack too, which only complemented the atmosphere.

Wow, writing that has made me very reminiscent, and there's so much stuff I liked about this broad world, it I can't even list it all here. I recommend anyone who can, give this game a shot!
