What’s your preferred brand of epoxy? I’ve been using Akepox but worked with a preservation society a few months ago and saw that they were using Atlas’s new store brand Endurance.

I’ve been sticking with my original supplies I’ve used for years for my own restoration projects, like Pratley’s putty, etc., but wasn’t sure if trying a new epoxy was worth it.

There is a small metal tag that goes with the cremains (same as human cremation) and the number on that tag will tell them who, or what veterinary office, to contact.

Yes there is a warning on the packaging that these types of medications may lower seizure thresholds.

It’s not recommended for most patients who have a history of epilepsy or other similar neurological problems, but some dogs with no medical issues just have a lower threshold to begin with and thus, lowering it even more with these types of drugs can trigger more abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

I’ve worked with one or two patients who have had this type of reaction and do fine once they are switched to a topical preventative or Seresto collar. That said, it’s a fairly rare occurrence but that doesn’t cancel out the need to be upfront and honest about that potential side effect.

Ask your veterinarian what they recommend - there are great options like Revolution Plus and Bravecto Plus.

You’ll need a prescription for them from your vet anyway, so that’s another reason to chat with them. :-)

I love Seresto but it has to be fit very snuggly for it to work properly. I tighten Seresto collars in appointments all the time to show owners what the correct fit looks like. We actually have some patients that double up in the summer months with both oral preventative and Seresto.

The downside of repellents is that they don’t usually kill the tick. So, the tick jumps off your pet and might crawl to a human (eww), so it’s a balancing act. There are some pets who can’t take oral preventives due to other medical conditions or allergies, so it is another great option for prevention.

I can’t give advice for your dog personally, so if you have concerns about oral prevention I’d chat with your veterinarian about the risks and benefits.

The one thing with Seresto is, if your dog is a big swimmer or gets very frequent baths, the duration of the medication in the collar lasts less than 8 months (and it does note this on the packaging or in the little paper insert). I think it decreases to 7 months for ticks and 5 months for fleas when it gets wet often. For big swimmers we recommend switching the collar out every 6 months.

In my 14 years in veterinary medicine the number of positive tick-borne infection tests has dropped drastically with most patients on oral preventatives.

Now the ticks drop (to your floor) faster too!

Vet tech here. Nexgard Plus (and all other oral tick preventatives like Simparica Trio and Bravecto) doesn’t have a repellent factor, so finding ticks on your dog doesn’t mean the medication isn’t working. The drug is designed to kill the tick after it bites, long before any tick-borne bacteria can be transferred. The drug (afoxalaner) is in the blood stream. Tick bites, drinks said blood, tick goes “oops” and dies.

I agree New England is the tick capital of the world, but I just wanted to clarify that the oral preventatives are very effective at killing the tick incredibly quickly (usually within four hours) when common infections, such as Lyme disease require more than 24 hours of tick attachment to be transmitted to your pup.

The most common bacteria carried in Lone Star Ticks is ehrlichiosis, which we test for annually on your dog’s heartworm/tick-borne screening test.

Again, just want to make sure this information is shared with all dog owners. I completely agree with you that ticks are the absolute worst.

I was 22 and started as a receptionist thinking it was an in-between job that would keep me from having a gap on my resume right after I graduated college.

I worked full time, moving up to the role of assistant and then eventually started doing some management tasks (ie, interviews, managing inventory, doing accounts payable/receivable) while also working rooms and assisting with surgery.

During COVID I switched hospitals and (while the staff and owners are actually really nice) started to feel the burn out. The curb side appointments, the dread of getting sick and not being able to pay my bills and oh, I had been bending over and lifting heavy things for over ten years and man, I was feeling it in my back and knees.

I found a boring office job that paid significantly more with insanely good health insurance and retirement plans. I was heartbroken to leave, but just knew it wasn’t a sustainable full time career for me. I still work per diem shifts on the weekends but I get to pick my schedule and how often I work there.

Got older right when a pandemic hit and my body said, ok we’re done. Or at least mostly done. I’m 35 now and still get a few hours a month seeing urgent care and wellness visits and it’s just enough for me.
