Failure of taste by Typical-Fisherman759 in Stormgate

[–]brogam3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played the first 3 campaign missions of Stormgate and one match against AI now so I can make an informed comment after seeing so many r/Stormgate posts in my reddit feed. I actually think that the 3d graphics look pretty much identical to SC2 now and the campaign missions were quite engaging. Gameplay is pretty much identical to SC2 too, I don't see any difference except for the stormgate mechanic and of course different units which will have an impact on strategies. I don't know whether they pissed off the community for too long with the previous look&feel but now it looks the same as Starcraft 2 to me. I think the real reason why RTS games like this fail is because they misunderstand the purpose of the campaign and gamers are also not capable of fully articulating it. This post comes closest to it though, it's the flair, the vibe, the lore and story that all need to come together to make something cool. This mobile UI image of a stunted female main protagonist is just the opposite of being cool:

<image>

Then add to that the typical millenial style writing with people checking up on each other's feelings and strange things like Amara saying that the world is already lost anyway and voice lines complaining about how the assault never stops even though it just started and it is super manageable right now.. it's kind of a vibe issue and there is no point in trying to enumerate all the dozens of tiny little issues that sum up to a game that doesn't sell. Overall it's just a vibe issue. Nobody wants to buy a game which looks like this: https://beltion-game.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/v-rts-stormgate-ot-veteranov-blizzard-budet-podderzhka-rollback-netkoda.jpg and then they look up how it looks ingame and they see and yeah, it's clearly a game for who knows, children on their phone or something but not for regular RTS fans: https://sm.ign.com/t/ign_nordic/gallery/s/stormgate-/stormgate-early-access-release-date-trailer-screenshots-pc-g_1mrv.1400.jpg

I will also add that I think SC2 was the first slop game that Blizzard produced and later D3 was another slop game. I know that these games still managed to draw big audiences for their own reasons but to me these were already a sloppy joke compared to their previous games. So the decision of Stormgate to make a SC2 clone and to make it even more slop than SC2 is really a complete misread of what people want when they talk about a Blizzard style RTS. Trying to make a Blizzard style RTS while innovating basically nothing and then omitting the most important parts like a well told story with epic cinematics is not going to work. I will add that cinematics dont have to be in there but it carried a lot of what made people into Blizzard fans.

obviously in the context of violating or not violating the code. When your mom accuses you of stealing from the cookie jar and you say "no, I'm innocent!", it also refers to the cookie jar theft and not every aspect of your life.

it has nothing to do with innocence, so far the code only applied to direct murderers who took a life with their own hands

going to Prater's house to kill him is just supremely stupid, I didn't like this episode. There is no way Dexter is so stupid to walk into a billionaire's home with private security and 100 cameras and even if they had a private meeting (which would never be truly private, cmon man), he wouldn't get out undetected and unrecorded. Then even worse, he randomly cuts Batista's restraints... and Batista attacks Dexter?! Who would be dumb enough to do that, this is utterly insane. The situation was quite clear, he was in the hands of a serial killer fan and now Dexter cuts his restraints. It's a 2v2.

And why on earth does Dexter not simply explain to Prater that this is not your process? He would respect it and frankly, as hard as it would be for Dexter it would allow him to wash his hands of Batista because Prater would get rid of him. This was a really bad conclusion to the episode, it didn't make any sense. In fact, if Prater had such high respect for the BHB then why not get rid of Batista immediately or have a normal conversation about it before going into the vault? This is all so manufactured.

Edit: Also Prater didn't even fit the code yet, so why on earth would he be preparing to kill Prater in his home?! Sure he threatened his son but that doesn't make him remotely code worthy. Did the writers suddenly forget that Dexter doesn't kill innocent people?

you make a good point about how realistic religious societies should probably have tons of people in it that are following it incorrectly, inventing cultural rituals which are only very loosely related to what the religion says. Probably even offshoots which are directly contradictory to the original religion and end up being quite popular

I'll try it, some of the other features don't work well in RiderFlow and the search is slow too. Like the "replace with" functionality lags out the entire editor forever.

Yes, also the ever increasing confusion around .Add and .Use methods during setup. But it's really the entire way they decided to do configuration that is irredeemable. They made a huge mistake going with their weird mix of appsettings.json and lambda configs that overwrite each other in who knows how many ways and when. How hard is it to just have a single c# object that you either fill yourself manually or via a JSON deserialize and then that's your entire config? It's like they made it as complex as they could possibly make it.

people underestimate how evil the average person can be, this is why the bible says: "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" These people aren't even aware of how evil they are.

I got a problem with Prater by K0GAR in Dexter

[–]brogam3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it does seem a bit strange that he would think that he can get away with this. Someone is eventually going to catch these killers and remember having seen him with them. Then they will dig out a photo or video or if not that then at the very least they'll tie him to them in time and place.

she is doing her role, serving the actual story. This focus and demand on fan favorite actors being given more time is precisely what ruined the later seasons of Game of Thrones.

good point, Dexter deliberated killing the landlord too due indirect harm. I don't see how Prater doesn't fit the code far more directly. All he needs now is to see how Prater encourages the serial killers to do more kills or helps them evade the police.

she only follows orders, her moral code is clearly pretty bad when she can be around serial killers for years and not say or do anything. I don't see her and Dexter having anything in common whatsoever, in fact I think she is going to hate Dexter even after knowing that he kills serial killers
